    Default stripper or "dancer"

one of the girls on here mentioned this, and it reminded me of a few weeks ago ( i dont know if it has been discussed before, i searched it and found nothing, so sorry if it has)...so i was talking to a bunch of girls in the smoking area of work and one of them was like " don't call yourself a stripper. why do you disrespect yourself? i am a dancer, not a stripper, that's a term for nasty ho-bag girls." whelp, you DO strip your clothes off sweetie, it aint like your a ballerina..i do think that to be a GOOD stripper/exotic dancer it does take a lot of skill and strength and coordination and its not just taking your clothes off and gyrating around like a moron with no rhythm or grace. it looks easy to some, but when i started i got a rude awakening at how hard it is to make every movement sexy. but i don't think its disrespecting yourself to say you're a stripper, i do it all the time, i have no qualms . what do you guys prefer?

I don't care what people call me. I get naked and dance around for strangers. The end.

General rules that I stick to...

If someone refers to girls as "strippers" when they have no connections to the industry and don't know that I've danced, then I'm very wary. These people tend to be disrespectful towards sex workers.

I call myself a "stripper" if I'm talking to someone who knows about my history with dancing, or if I'm talking to another sex worker. I alternate this word with "dancer" just to provide some linguistic variety.

I call myself a "dancer" as in "I used to dance" if I'm talking to someone who has no history with the sex industry and no prior knowledge of me stripping.

A stripper is a stripper IMO. There shouldn't be a need to sugar coat it. Calling myself a dancer makes me feel like I'm trying to hide something or I'm ashamed of it. I'd much rather be upfront and just call myself a stripper.

in my club (thailand), we really grouped ourselves as dancer and stripper. those dancers always talk to their customers "i am just a dancer and i won't strip for you...", those dancers used to look down strippers because we used to be nude in front of the strangers on the stage.

anyhow, i not really care even i expose my nude body in front of everyone because my earning is better than them (those dancers). i still treat stripper is kind of work in this industry.

I get the connotation behind "stripper" and "dancer" - especially as charlie pointed it out - but they're synonyms when it comes down to it and I certainly don't get offended by being called a stripper since that's, you know, what I am. Interestingly, one of my managers differentiates between the two and classifies the "dancers" as the girls who have their shit together and actually hustle, while the "strippers" are the drama queens, trainwrecks, and who sit around getting drunk/high or basically just not working.

I use a wide variety of what are basically synonyms to talk about what we do- "stripper," "exotic dancer," "dancer," "stripping," "in the clubs," "pole dancing," "lap dancing," "pole dancer," "sex worker," "sex work," "sex industry," "adult industry," even "ecdysiast" and "cabaret performing." Which word I use depends on every factor from who I'm talking to (are they uber-religious pious types or a girl I work with or somewhere in between), to the manner of the discussion, to linguistic variety, to rights issues, and even just my mood. Some times, I just feel like being a smart ass about it, especially when I say I'm an ecdysiast. When I'm talking about it in a condescending way, I refer to "stripper baggage," "stereotypical stripper," or just "stereotype."

A ball can be called different things- a sphere, an orb, a globe, etc. It's still just a ball. If you work in a strip club, you're a stripper, no matter how you sugarcoat it.
Exotic dancing is like any other job.
If you work in an office, you wear dress shoes and a suit.
If you work in a restaraunt, you wear skid resistant shoes and a uniform.
If you work in a strip club, you wear 7" stilettos and lycra g-strings.

I prefer stripper and I don't get offended by it, either. I get offended by people insisting that they are not strippers when they are.

I don't give a shit what people call me. I'm probably making more than them anyways. Hell, I call myself a stripper. I have a fucking banging ass body and I make a damn good living showing it off.

I call myself a stripper on the main - I don't think any honest job is shameful. Sometimes I say 'dancer' if I'm in the mood.

Dancer, but I started dancing over 10 years ago when there was more dancing and less pole work. For how I perform 'dancer' is the suitable title imho.

I personally feel the title "stripper" has negative connotations. Before I was in the industry I would hear stories of "strippers" at bucks parties and such that did some pretty over the top displays and often had did a public sex performance in front of the crowd with the raffle winner or such, I now know weren't strippers at all but actually prostitutes doing shows. But because of this negative impression being established in my brain I always referred to myself as a dancer.
When i was working (been out 4 years) the girls in clubs most often thought themselves as Table top dancers, or Lap dancers, and sometimes exotic dancers and Strippers are thought of as the girls who do shows at private parties.
The industry has changed a lot since.

I don't get offended by "stripper"-as long as it isn't used as an insult i.e. "you're JUST a Stripper etc". I find that most people respond better to "dancer" or "entertainer". "Stripper" is more in your face/does have negative connotations, so I tend not to use it around people who are obviously uncomfortable about the idea of sex work and I don't use it in public either...otherwise people's ears prick up and they tune into my conversations lol. Also, I favour "dancer" because it's what I've always been called (I started at a high end club and that's what we were always referred to, so I guess that's just out of habit).

I my opinion the word stripper, when OTHER people are talking about strippers its used negatively. Never had the dancer comment thrown in my face like the stripper word. Like when a douche is ripping me off he'll say, your just a stripper or an ex that uses that word to put me down. The word stripper when used by people not in the industry sounds a lot like the word slut to me the way its used. You wouldnt call yourself a stripper in a negative tone anyway, its everybody else that uses it that way. I wouldn't say stripper when people ask what I do for a living. The, Your just a stripper comment pisses me off.

I don't have a problem being called stripper or dancer. But if in public, I most likely won't talk about it at all of refer to it as dancer. Mainly to keep myself safe because when people, especially guys, hear the word stripper they start getting certain expectations

either word. i don't find either offensive or especially meaningful. if telling someone what i do 'lap dancer' usually comes out, which may sound more shocking in uk than 'stripper' as it just ensures they know you're in someone's lap lol.

I started dancing in a different era (1993)and always preferred dancer over stripper. For one, I was always dancing but not always stripping (some clubs I worked at were bikini bars that sold no contact dances). Even when stripping I incorporated dance routines into stripping.

Stripper, dancer it doesn’t reallymatter to me as long as I’m making money.

However I’m more prone torefer to myself as a stripper.
