    Smiley Learn Web Design

    Hello ladies!

I am currently thinking of breaking away from my agency as an independent. Just hired a photographer, and about to subscribe to a very awesome site builder's services for a few months for my first website. I love her design, but I feel extremely limited by the layout options that are offered by her and numerous other web designers. I would want the ability to customize my site for my purposes... Thus, I am extremely interested in building my own website myself. My community college offers a Web Design course that uses Dreamweaver, and I am thinking about starting with that.

How do I learn to build webpages? What are the steps I need to take in learning web design? How practical is it to set a goal to build my first in 6 months or less?

I have a basic knowledge of HTML, and could use with a refresher in CSS. But I feel this is as simple as getting a good desk reference. I don't understand the difference between using Joomla or WP. Would I need to use either if I chose to use Dreamweaver software (I'm thinking no)? I know that I need to find a host, and this is where I start feeling lost... Also, what should I be aware of with building/hosting a "adult" website?

Some of you seem extremely tech savvy. I am hoping you can direct me as I research this.

    Peace and Love,

    Jacquelyn

PS- This would be a great personal business that I can take on the road. I am willing to invest in this skill set.

Start with taking the web design course it will give you the basics of what you need to get down. and there are plenty of stuff online of how to make sites and using a wordpress platform.

It depends on your personality, and whether or not you are a good self-learner or not.. If you are, then I highly suggest doing online tutorials, buying a few manuals and doing it that way. Otherwise, if you need the classroom setting / instruction then go with the route of taking a class.

I did both...Im self taught in web design...and then decided to take a class for my certification. I slept through the whole thing I was so bored...it moved way too slow for me and I didnt learn anything in class that I hadnt already learned on my own. My instructor even joked that for being unconscious most of the course, I did amazingly well.

Anyway, there are a *ton* of online learning resources out there...I love programming anyway, so for me I just delve in and have a blast with it...but if you dont dig it so much, then a setting that may make it more interesting for you could help. So yeah...thats my advice

I just went through teaching myself the new HTML5 / CSS3 standards last month to redevelop my website, so if youre interested, I can post up the links I used to learn it.

Taking a course just to have a semi-customized website is ridiculous and totally unnecessary. You can buy a template and customize it. It isn't rocket science if you aren't bad at poking around and making a few mistakes to learn. The hardest part for me is writing content to put on my website.

A few months back I took a 2 day course to learn web design, and we worked with this website called Weebly http://www.weebly.com/

It is incredibly easy to use and its FREE, and for about $30/yr you get all the upgrades. If you have a domain name purchased from another website you can bring it over, or buy one through them. If you don't have one and you just want to use the default address, it will show up like this: xxxx.weebly.com

You can put together a site in under an hour (provided you know exactly what you want and you have your pictures and other content prepared ahead of time).

There are loads of themes to choose from and you can put up a shopping cart to sell services or merchandise, post videos... and everything else you can think of. Plus, the customer support dept are pretty quick to get back to you if you have any trouble.

Save yourself the trouble of going to school for web design unless you are really passionate about it, or if its too much trouble to build a website yourself, pm me and I can try to get you intouch with my mentor's web designer. She puts together wordpress sites and charges about $40/hr.

    Hope this helps: )

You can also build your own site easily on wix, and cuties tools is really popular also for building sites, they charge $70/month.

Well, true it isnt rocket science...but as I like to say, the only thing that is rocket science...is rocket science

I mean, I know how it is to want complete control over how your website looks...no templates or free website builders are enough for me, because I want things to look exactly how I imagine it, with the features I want on it..and the only way to have that kind of control is to build it yourself...which is why I started learning it to begin with.

And web design / development isnt really something you can just pick up and do, it *is* time consuming both to learn and the time it takes to develop a website, but I also think its worth it, plus its a good skill to have. I think if someone is interested, they should go for it and not give up and settle for using a template.. Not that theres anything wrong with templates, they are great for someone who doesnt want to learn the ins and outs and just wants to get a site up asap...but I guess..if theres a genuine interest, theres nothing wrong with learning how.

I hope that I dont step on any toes here for those who prefer templates...just that, as someone who does do web design and development, I know that what I do doesnt compare to what you can get from using a template...and I woudlnt dissaude someone from going for it if that's what they want to do. Theres a lot of options out there...just depends on what you want.

^I totally understand what you are saying. Every time I pique through my website I customize it more and more.

Recently, I have read that adult websites are against Weebly's TOS. So be careful! A lot of the free website builders don't allow adult websites.

Yeah, def...its very freeing too, to be able to do anything I want, have anything I want...for just the cost of my webhost and domain name...and not have to worry about my site going down or in someone elses hands.

I WILL tell you though, I have spent MANY MAAAANY long nights here frustrated over trying to get something to work right, banging my head against the wall, and threatening to throw my laptop into the Miami River, and swear off ever building another website again everrrrrr!!!! And then I figure it out and Im happy again

With the last one I did, I decided to learn both PHP and the HTML5/CSS3 at the same time to build my site on...after a solid week of next to no sleep living on coffee, and finally my site taking some kind of shape...I accidentally hit something on my laptop while reaching over for something, and I have no clue what I did, but it screwed up the entire design and since I was still trying to learn what I was doing...had no idea where to even look to fix it. Soooo..I had to start all over again. Im telling you....my neighbors must have thought someone was getting killed in here cause I got so mad. So yeah...there are risks involved to doing it yourself

But...I love how my site turned out...and I will not be doing anything to it again ever. Well, til I dont like it anymore, which will probably be sometime next month
