Question Got the degree now...but want to continue stripping?

    Hello ladies,

A few months ago I finally graduated from college and got licensed to work in healthcare. Soon after I got my license I started looking for jobs, but with no results. I decided the problem was that I needed to go to where the jobs are, so I started stripping full time to buy a car to get me there. After a couple of months of this I started getting cold feet. I've started thinking about putting my profession on hold to continue stripping full time, at least for a year or two.

I love dancing and I enjoy the freedom and money that comes with it. Most of my friends that graduated with me are still struggling to find jobs, and the ones that managed to find a full time job in my area don't seem very happy. As it turns out, I've recently learned that by being a stripper full time, I bring home more money they do.

So my current plan is to continue stripping full time for a year or two, try to get and save all the money I can and use my degree when I'm ready.

I'm still not totally decided on this plan. I was wondering if any of you ladies had a similar experience. Did you specialize in something or get a degree, put it on hold for a while, and then use it when you got older/got all the cash you needed? I would love to hear your thoughts.

I did almost the exact same thing as you. I started dancing my senior year of college, assuming that once I had my degree, I would stop dancing and get a regular 9-5 job. Well, once I graduated, I was about to take a job in health care, but it paid $30,000 a year and I decided to just keep dancing making way more than that and working far fewer than 40 hrs/ week. I spent about a year and a half dancing after I got my degree, traveling, partying, making tons of money, and just enjoying life. In that time, I thought to myself, "Why would I leave a great paying job that I love, for a so-so job that doesn't even pay that well?" I have a friend that is a Physician's Assistant, and one night her husband was wasted and told me how much she made per year ($200k) and I was like WHAT! It would only take me like 3 and 1/2 more years of school to become a PA, so that's what I am in school for now, and I can keep dancing, knowing that when I do stop, it will be to take a job that pays more than dancing does.
So, I am very glad that I kept dancing after graduation because it let me figure out that I want only the best for myself. Plus, now that I am getting my masters degree, I have a job that allows me to live comfortably without working too many hours and I can focus on school and I even have time to volunteer at a local hospital to gain some experience. Even if I didn't decide to go back to school or anything like that, I am glad that I had a year or two of partying and having very little responsibility just to get it out of my system, you know? What kind of person wouldn't take an opportunity like that? I think it would be something I regretted had I just jumped right into the real world after graduating college. Anyways, I do wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide to do, and I completely understand the stress that you're under, because while I was no longer a student and "just a stripper," I started to feel kind of bad about myself, like "what am I doing with my life?"

Wow thank you, your story is very inspiring!

This is very true, I feel exactly like this right now.

It would only take me like 3 and 1/2 more years of school to become a PA, so that's what I am in school for now, and I can keep dancing, knowing that when I do stop, it will be to take a job that pays more than dancing does.

Wow, maybe I should have become a PA instead of what I studied for! I'm so used to the money that I really have no other choice than to keep improving myself until I get a higher paying job. I'm not sure what direction to take quite just yet. I'm going to need more time to think about that.

With my current degree I can pursue a masters, but a couple of the ones I want requires a minimum of two years on-the-job experience. I did a quick browse at some PA programs and I'm under the impression that I can get a masters in PA with already having a bachelors?

Yep you need a bachelor's degree and I'm under the impression that most PA's have bachelors in bio or pre-med. Mine is in Psychology so I am at a community college right now getting some of the classes like anatomy and physiology and microbiology that I need to apply to a PA program. They all want you to have hands on clinical experience as well so many PA's are ex-EMT's or nurses (!). That's why I am volunteering at a hospital right now, but I am under the impression that I may need to take that healthcare job I was originally offered in order to increase my chances of getting in. It's pretty competitive to get in I think :-/
Anyways, I am excited about it and maybe it's something you could look into! One thing that I did was that I shadowed a PA in the ER for one shift to see what they do and it really helped me make up my mind that it's something I want to pursue. Maybe talk to a hospital and see if they offer opportunities for shadowing?

i'd advise to keep dancing for income ( as long as it won't show up on a paper trail..you don't want that if you're getting into the medical field), but keep looking for work and netoworking within your field. or going back to school like aperfectseal said! i put off using my certificates, and by the time i wanted a job within the field the employers wanted to know about my employment gap, and didn't like that i neither had experience, or that i had been out of school for a long time..it sucks :p

I'm in the same boat as you though not in the healthcare field.

If you only want to dance for a year or two, that's not TOO big of an employment gap to explain away once you start trying to join the workforce, especially with the current economic situation and the relatively high demand for healthcare practitioners. However, know that while you're struggling now to job hunt, it won't get any easier to longer you stay unemployed in a relevant field.

I took on a 4-month paid internship in my field, and while it only lets me work in the club once a week, it still keeps my resume current so that when I'm finally read to join the workforce, I won't be at a total disadvantage when competing against people fresh out of school or with experience.

It's certainly tempting to say fuck it, dance full-time, and deal with finding a job later, but you will make your life infinitely easier by keeping one foot in the healthcare field while dancing full-time. It doesn't even have to be an internship, but volunteering once a week, working part-time, attending networking events, joining professional associations, etc., etc., will make a big difference down the line.

Hello again, and thank you for all of the responses! Everyone posts were very insightful. I am not at a keyboard right now, so I hope the following makes sense (touch screen).

I am very aware about having a professional conduct while having a license. Fortunately there is no paper trail indicating that I work in adult entertainment.

I also thought about how to explain my employment gap. Someone I worked for was kind enough to let me use him as a reference that I am employed for him now. He runs a business unrelated to adult entertainment, but I feel like this may not be enough.

I like Shanna's point, it won't hurt to do some volunteering.

More to come when I get to a keyboard! Thanks again for the responses!

Someone suggested that I could say I am a bartender for the time being, but I am unsure.

I think you should get a pt job or internship while you dance. you dont want to have gaps on your resume and when you are ready to quit dancing youre likely to get a better than entry level job immediately from your contacts. even volunteering 10 hrs/week will allow you to build relationships and lead to a great job.

I mean, it's better than nothing, but if it's also not relevant to healthcare it's not going to help you very much.

    Hello again,

Thanks for the responses! Finally got to my keyboard; I thought I had more to say but I mulled it over and I think I'll stick with the original goal and continue my job search. I don't like the idea of having a large unemployment gap.

Take it from me..Having a huge unemployment will only make it impossible to find a job even with a degree..No related work experience is killing me...Even w a degree..

I would advise doing some sort of part time work or part time schooling while you are stripping, that is in the health care field, so that you can explain what happened for the past couple of years. If you say that you got out of the health care area for a couple years, not doing anything with that education, employers might not like it. Try to do SOMETHING (even if it's just volunteering) that will keep you staying in that area!
