Dizzy Has Club asked for Your SS#?

I've worked with this club for 5 years, they're updating their system to IPad's and fingerprint scanners for dancer check-ins. But out of the blue they're asking for dancers to bring in their SS cards. This wasn't required before or in any other clubs I've worked at, for that matter. I asked a manager why they need it and just got a, "Oh we're updating the system" response. Not much help. Anyone know why clubs need a SS#?

    Am I being paranoid?

I've had to bring it for every club I've worked at in Houston, in addition to a government-issued photo ID. When I asked one manager, he said it was for tax-related paperwork.

Edit: One girl who works in Houston said that a particular club habitually redoes their paperwork to make sure everything is in order when they're expecting a police raid. It doesn't sound like that's the case with your club since they're already redoing their system, but it may be something to keep in mind.

^^ My thoughts exactly! It makes me nervous, not that I have anything to hide. I'm aware and fine with having a paper trail linking me to this club, others and dancing in general but finger print scans and SS numbers are not what I bargained for. It's becoming so easy to gather information on a person as technology advances. I really liked the sense of anonymity that went with this biz. Quick and easy, drivers ID and some paperwork. If I wanted this bull, I'd get a vanilla job. Woe is me!

Actually this was a requirement of the Patriot Act ... meant to require all 'employers' to verify the legal work status of their 'employees'. Clubs were able to skirt this requirement for a few years based on 'subcontracting' dancers rather than hiring them as employees. However, several recent court rulings holding company management responsible for penalties and/or charges if they engage 'subcontractors' which in turn allow non-citizens and/or non-green card aliens to work has tightened the legal work status verification requirements.

Also, the new ObamaCare law requires all US businesses which pay out more than $600 to another 'business' ( i.e. independent contractor dancers ) over the course of a year to file a 1099. This requirement ( i.e. reporting 2011 payouts via 1099 ) was waived in 2012 based on protests from the business lobby, but to the best of my knowledge the waiver was not extended as part of the 'fiscal cliff' deal signed earlier this month. And the paying businesses have until the end of February to send out these 1099's.
