    Question DJ tips

    Hello ladies!

I am posting this out of curiosity, and also because I want to gain some perspective. I have a male friend who is a DJ in our local club circuit. He claims that he helps the girls make all of their money. Fact: the newer girls need to be educated on tipping protocol, and sometimes they are just too broke to tip the DJ more than 10 (weekday min) or 20 (weekend min). This particular DJ works at a dive in a small southern city where all of the local clubs treat the girls like poo... like they owe the club. He is also very vocal about claiming his 10% from the girls.

I sort of agree with the 10% rule, and I definitely agree with the 10 & 20 dollar minimum tip out. I have my own internal standard for tipping, however, and I would like to see how it compares with other dancer's opinions and habits. I tend to tip 20 min and 10% up to 300. After that, it really just depends on the DJ, if I was even on stage, and if I had a ton of regulars or not. The most I've ever tipped a local DJ was $50, and he had earned it. When I travel, I always tip very very well, especially because the DJ's are always the so helpful and kind. But I've heard stories of some girls tipping this DJ several hundred dollars, and not because they are selling thousands of dollars in lap dances. What is going on here?

How do you tip your DJ? What are your club's standards? What conditions would cause you to tip your DJ more than or less than 10% of your total?

    Thanks!

I am used to a $20 minimum tip. If they play my jamz, they get more. If they cheer me up, they get more. If I have a particularly good night, they get more.

I love my DJ's, I keep it professional with them, they aren't dick-bags to me, we joke around once in a while, and they play music that makes me look good.... none of that "at the copa, copacabana" or "hey there delilah" shit...

I hold up my end of the bargain. I check in at the start of a shift. I notify them when I have a VIP room. I arrive on stage on time. I give them their money in a timely fashion and I do not keep them waiting. I don't distract them, and they treat me kindly.

There have been some stellar nights with INSANE stage tips (uncommon in NYC) where I was so enthused that I tipped the DJ $100. It's not a standard practice but it lets them know I appreciate their respect of my musical taste and I appreciate their willingness to cooperate.

Tipping is pretty rare where I am. I always tip $3 (I pay $27 to work and just leave $30 with the DJ) and am one of the few girls to leave even that. If the DJ helps me make money - meaning he skips me on stage or changes the rotation, I'll tip $10-20 depending on how much that helps me make. However, management doesn't like the DJs to do that, so only one consistently does it for me. I actually don't even have to ask him, he just takes me off his list and pretends I'm not there. I'm quite happy with our system here - I hate mandatory tips and people expecting money for nothing. I will, however, happily tip when it's earned.

i agree with shana..tipping is not mandatory where i dance either, and the club pays them to come in and play the music. so unless they do something out of the norm to help out, i don't see why i need to tip them. i think a lot of clubs underpay their djs and staff and need us to not only pay house fee, but to pay their employees for them. sometimes it feels like everyone there are just leaches with their hands out, wanting to get a cut of our hard work without putting in the effort. im so against mandatory tipping. but IF one of the staff goes out of their way to help me get dances, or to play the specific songs i am VERY generous. i definitely believe in helping out the people who help me

there arent enforced minimums at most of the clubs I work. at one club, I like the dj, I tip him $10 and when i make more than $600 I tip him $20. theres another dj whos a fucking asshole and he gets a flat $5. I actually stopped tipping him for awhile because he was so horrific to us and then he started treating me a little better so he gets $5 now. I am pretty low key and never ask for any special favors or stumble into the dj booth drunk and yelling so every dj, regardless of how much I tip, likes me.

frequently other staff members treat me better so I usually tip them the same as dj. im pretty disgusted by girls that tip the dj $30-40 and then scoff their nose at giving even $5 to the bouncers who are busting their ass running around the club keeping guys in line and walking the girls 4+blocks to whatever cheap parking space they parked their car in at the end of the night, not to mention these guys are just genuinely nice guys. same with the cashier, when im at a stage heavy club I tip the cashier just as much as the dj because ill be giving him 1s and 20s all night to trade into larger bills even tho he is usually swamped with kicking trouble makers out and taking admission and processing funny money, he is still happy to trade my $$ for me.

Almost all of the DJs I've worked with have been creepy pieces of shit. I don't know if that's Houston for you, or just my bad luck. Either way, I tip to stay off stage, or if someone does me a favor. Otherwise, I pay what my contract states I have to pay, and no more.

I always tip bare minimum to everyone, no matter how much I make, unless they somehow helped me earn money. Here's how I see it...

The minimum tip-out for my DJ is $10. Last night we had about 40-50 girls working. He made $400-$500 MINIMUM, and I know there are some girls who tip more than the minimum tip-out. So, essentially, he probably made more than a lot of the dancers.

Our floor hosts made $240 each last night off of tips (minimum $5 per floor host, I was there while they counted). All they really do is show people to tables, bring dancers to customers who request them and watch naked women dance all night...

YOU bring in the business. YOU are the reason all of these employees have jobs in the first place. Keep everything you earn that you're not contractually obligated to give away, unless someone helps you and actually *earned* it! Don't tip someone just for being nice! (One of my bouncers picked me personally for the biggest whale in the club last night! I tipped him $40 on top of the $5. Er, in theory. I may have tipped him $120, depending on who got my missing $100 bill, but thats another story. LOL)

At my club we have a 10$ minimum, but I try to tip at least 15$, unless I have had a really slow night. The most I've tipped is probably 30$ and the dj was very grateful. It is standard that the better you tip, the better you will get treated. Tipping the dj better= getting to dance to the music I want. Getting to dance to the music I want= I generally make more on my stage sets. Therefore I always tip my dj!

Our club min is $7; I tip out 40-60 to the DJ to keep my off stage on top of our 42 house fee. If I break 1k; I give the DJ an extra 20-40. So at that point he has made $100 from me. If I make 2k... I'm not giving him another 100 though. Screw the 10% rule.

I fucking hate dickwads DJs and floormen, and mandatory tipping should be abolished from the industry.
