while having cash on hand can be risky, it's also the only way to be 100% sure that you can lay your hands on your money when you need it. There is concern in NYC, Boston, etc. that power losses resulting from today's storm will kill power and/or telecoms, cutting off access to money via ATM's, bank teller windows etc.

I come home and EAT. Then I count my money and write an email to myself with the date and shift. I record what my CPA told me to record: how much paid out for house fee, house ma, DJ, etc. and any other expenses, as well as my profit. Every quarter, I review my emails and put them in a spreadsheet that is organized in the way my CPA prefers and submit it to him. Makes paying taxes very easy and gives good records in the event of a challenge or audit.
Depending on my needs, some stays at home or some/all will go to the bank. When I was paying off my private student loans, I was putting it in the bank and then writing checks, sending it right away to Sallie Mae. Right now, I'm in the same mode paying off some business expenses for a non-stripping biz.
Melonie, I love your safe strategy. Good points about having money on hand - I forget about that because I get paranoid about the risks of having a lot of cash at home.

This was an outgrowth of two situations I encountered. The first was needing to raise $1000 bail for a dancer friend busted on a Saturday night ... which because of the daily ATM limits I couldn't do until monday ( at which point she was transferred to the county lock-up ). The second was being caught during a 3 day New York power outage, during which no ATM's were working for miles around, during which no stores, gas stations, restaurants etc. could process credit cards.Melonie, I love your safe strategy. Good points about having money on hand - I forget about that because I get paranoid about the risks of having a lot of cash at home.
From that point forward I decided that investing $150 or so in an el-cheapo WalMart floor safe, plus investing $600 or so in a 'quality' wall safe, in order to safely keep several grand in cash on hand ( not to mention reasonable burglary / fire protection for my passport, my jewelry, my house deed, my car titles, my tax returns etc. ) was a very worthwhile investment.
See and also
The el-cheapo safe above is good for storing documents ( waterproof plus fireproof ), but is a pushover for being stolen ( since it's light enough to float ! ) or broken into ( basically sheet metal that can be sawed open or sledgehammered open pretty easily. The 'quality' safe above is another matter ... it's made of heavy welded steel plate ( that will break saw blades and cause sledgehammers to bounce off it ), plus it can be ( and should be ) bolted to studs inside your wall which virtually eliminates the safe itself being stolen. Actually stealing the 'quality' wall safe, of course, would mean that the burglar would have to NOT be satisfied with finding and stealing the el-cheapo floor safe in the first place, and then investing more time and effort to search for the wall safe, and then investing even more time and effort to detach it from the wall studs ( which I changed from wood to steel while installing the wall safe ... suckers ! ). Even then, the burglar would STILL be facing the issue of making a getaway carrying the 100+ pound weight of the wall safe and its contents.
Is my wall safe really burglary-proof ??? NO it's not. If a burglar knew in advance where the wall safe was located, and knew in advance to bring a saber saw with steel cutting blades plus a hand cart to move the safe, he could be in and out inside of 5 minutes. So the REAL 'trick' is NOT to allow anybody to know of the existance of the second wall safe ... not friends, not relatives, not even a security contractor. And that means buying your wall safe via the internet from a distant seller, and doing ALL of the installation work yourself.
I would also add that after buying these safes, being able to safely hold several days worth of my nightly cash dancing earnings, and then being able to make a single well planned weekly 'trip' to the bank, to the post office ( to buy money orders ), to the grocery store, etc. also saved me a bunch of time ( and money ) every week. And in my neck of the woods at any rate, this was actually far safer than attempting to make nightly after-hours ATM deposits ... because it is fairly probable that some a$$hole is going to resort to watching dancers leaving the club at closing time proceeding directly to an ATM, and sooner or later rob them !!!

Your post made me think too, last week I left my purse in a restaurant, lucky for me they kept it for me and I was fine, but when I was stressing about losing my cards in it, I realised without my cards I had no cash because I put it all in the bank, your post and what happened gave me a serious re think about putting all my money in the bank.
xoxo

^^^ that's why I maintain two separate credit cards issued by two totally different financial institutions ... one personal and one for business. More than once I have had one card 'shut off' due to internet fraud etc. ... with the other card fortunately still usable. However, even that doesn't help in the event of an extended power outage, in the event of a bank failure, or in the event of needing bail money in the middle of a weekend !!! For better or worse, for some purposes, there is no substitute for 'cash'.

I count it, sort it out into stacks of $20 (because usually that's what I take to buy groceries and other miscellaneous stuff) and at the end of the week, I put whatever I didn't need for bills/taxes/spending money into the safe deposit box. I always keep some in my wallet, too.
There is nothing cuter to me than the image of a stripper flattening dollar bills with a straightening iron after work.
I deposit it on my prepaid cards.

Go to Wawa, get coffee, if I need to go to Wal Mart. The rest gets put away for a rainy day.

Great points here, & in your other quotes, Mel! The double safe idea's great, but I'm in a rental (also w/roomies ugh) I have a lock on my door, but, who knows?..right now I have something that looks like an 'everyday' object (I won't name it here) & it goes in there. However, there's no lock/secure feature other than its ordinariness
Ironically enough, I know the one roomie has a small portable safe as I saw the box for it in the garbage
Go to Jack in the Box.

Sooo good but soo bad. You are so thin you are probably allowed to have drunk munchies. We have them on every corner in Texas. I love their tacos.I didn't see that Tempest beat me to it. I love WaWa's chicken salad sandwiches. mmm...so good. End threadjack! I am turning this into a period munchies thread.

Buy a new snake. (I had the guy come to my work and I handed him $200 in assorted mangled bills

Count it obsessively, smell it, document how much I made, put a small amount into savings and the rest to bills. Sometimes I say fuck the bills, let them wait until my next "paycheck" and go shopping.

Yup when I was still doing a lot of 'dancing on the road', I used to take a 'diversion safe' along on every trip ...right now I have something that looks like an 'everyday' object (I won't name it here) & it goes in there. However, there's no lock/secure feature other than its ordinariness
... using a 'diversion safe' is better than nothing in a rental / roommate scenario where you're not allowed to cut into walls. However, I would still consider shelling out a few bucks for an el-cheapo WalMart floor safe ( while keeping the real valuables in a diversion safe ) to give untrustworthy roommates and burglars an easy target ( that won't actually pay off ! )

what i do with my money...
1. count it out, and put aside 20% for savings.
2. pay anything and everything i can with cash! that includes gas, groceries, and even my cell bill--verizon has handy cash centers to pay your bill in store.
3. i pay the rest of my bills a month in advance to give me moving room in the event of financial emergencies. i'm an RN, and try to do all of this with my paychecks before i even think about depositing cash i'll have to claim into the bank.
4. i divide my savings, and put half in the bank (which i claim), and put the other half in money orders purchased from the post office--addressed to myself. i send the receipt (also addressed to myself) to my mom who lives on the opposite side of the country to have a record of them in the event they are misplaced, there's a fire, stolen, etc. great thing about money orders? you must have a photo ID to cash them, and can do so at the post office, bank, whatever. keeps it a liiiiiittle safer than just have cash lying around.
5. go shopping. ^_^

-Eartha Kitt
I normally come home, throw my bag on the floor, pass out in a drunken stupor.
But the next day I count it, unfold the notes and make sure they're all facing the same way (I might start ironing them with straighteners now too!) and get my accounts book out, write down how much I made, and what my expenses were that day. Then I put all the coins into a jar and about £100 in my purse for spending money. (Unless I still have money in there, then I just top it up)
The rest goes into the bank either that day or within the next 2 days, and gets put into one of several accounts, either for rent and bills, savings, or tax bill savings. I really need to either get to the bank more often or invest in a safe.
wow I thought I was the only one who did this but I guess there are other smart strippers to .
Yes I just got out of a bad relationship he told me he plans on hurting me physically and finicially
I do that to as I am paranoid about getting robbied by ex b/f
