Lightbulb How Internet Comments Affect Us

This is a link to an amazing video that delves into the philosophy/psychology of internet comments. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IJyR...g3rrDjhm9Zs_wg

The video is quirky but there's certainly something in it that each of us can gain.

I know I've gotten into some flame wars on SW... I've actually been banned for a while. Not to mention EDN, which I am still banned from. But beyond that, the video inspires a certain level of introspection that (in my humble opinion) can help all of us reevaluate how we communicate on here and possibly even improve the discourse throughout the forum.

The video is really CUTE too.

Interesting. I used to be really bad about overreacting to negative comments thrown my way. I can pretty much take it in stride now for what it is, but still have some work to do. I need to stop caring so much about how others perceive me.

Right now I am dealing with some hurtful comments regarding an interview I gave regarding internet dating. Though they changed my name, the comments I received have upset me terribly. The reason they hurt me so terribly is because I failed at online dating for the most part and the issues I deal with regarding it are those I am super strict about. Anyway I got some nasty comments like how dare I be picky because of my age and even worse. Comments don't normally bother me this bad but adding in a nasty experience then having people blame me felt like being attacked then blamed for it. Sadly, people tend to be much nastier online than they would be offline.

Sophia: Well, I quit watching video after 2 minutes (out of 10), so I'll "only" ask for 2 minutes of my life back.

Although internet is but another means of communication, some people can take remarks/posts seriously. Personally, I try not to. I also try to look beyond just what poster says into how they say it. I can appreciate well communicated views, even if they don't agree with mine.

In closing, I'll paraphrase some "siggies" that I recall from various internet board perusals:

    1) "Never argue with an idiot- they'll drag you down to their level, and then beat you with experience."

    2) "The winner of an internet argument is like one of the 2 mentally retarded antagonists convincing the other that they're the smartest one. Neither winner should be taken seriously."
    I'm right 96% of the time. I don't sweat the other 5% .......................

You have to be able to walk away from a post, simple enough but most can't.
