Default Tax Questions - Do I have to file?

I cammed for a few months last year and made $2600. I am a 22 y/o single dependent student living with parents (fyi i do NOT receive financial aid). Publication 501 says that I do not have to file if my earned income was less than $5950. BUT I heard that if you are an independent contractor, you have to file if your income was over $600. Is that true?

My dad is actually an accountant, but he thinks I work at Publix, where I would be an "employee". So thats different.

Also, if I do have to file, the first thing that turbotax asks me is if I am an independent contractor. I say yes, and it asks me to pay for their services (but I know there is a free version) Do I have to pay for it?

This is my first time filing -.-
    Thx for your help guys!

    Please read from the source.

"You have to file an income tax return if your net earnings from self-employment were $400 or more. If your net earnings from self-employment were less than $400, you still have to file an income tax return if you meet any other filing requirement listed in the Form 1040 instructions (PDF)."

    ^^what Jess said

So yes you have to file, and yes you have to pay to file with turbo tax since you are not doing the standard quick and easy form. I think pretty much all places make you pay if you have anything but a simple w2.

If you're interested in getting your taxes done for free, H&R Block offers a free "Second Look" on taxes. Watch for commercials. I think it's usually in Feb. That means you do them on your own, then have someone at H&R Block look them over. Then you get audit protection. If you're off by more than a certain amount (I think it's $60), then you have to pay a minimal fee to have them redone. It's worth it.

However, if you can't navigate the IRS website, then you're better off paying someone to do them for you. Also, there are "catches" with using H&R Block. I think there is a disclosure clause at the end of the return forms they have you file.

If you just started camming this year, it's not going to cost you much to have them done elsewhere, especially if you have limited deductions & aren't claiming cam space/bills.
