I'm sure it varies by club of course, but I'd love to be able to dance to some music I really like!

Usually if I don't ask anything of my DJ all night, I'll tip him $10. If I ask him for songs/to bump me up or down on the stage list/switch my stage/etc. then I'll tip $20-$30, depending on how much I make and how much he helped me. I usually don't tip til the end of the night, but if he doesn't know you well or you haven't built rapport, let him know when you make the request that you'll tip him for it.
“The irony of commitment is that it's deeply liberating -- in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your internal critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around like rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head as the barrier to your life.”

You're right, it does vary by club, so unless one of the ladies replying here works at your club, none of these answers will help you. Case in point: at my club, girls always pick their own songs at the start of their shift and the majority don't tip the DJ anything. Your best bet will be to ask a fellow dancer how much it takes to get the DJ to play your own songs. Or, just ask the DJ himself - he is the one you want to do something for you after all.
At my club, we all have a playlist with the music we like, and before each set we can either hand-pick our songs or the DJ just picks 3 off our playlist. I certainly don't tip per request...I tip out at the end of my shift, and I tip the DJ and the bouncer 10% apiece.
So how big a selection of songs do they usually have? Can they play basically any song you can think of or is there some sort of database they have that doesn't have the more obscure ones?
Again, it depends on the club. Some clubs have TONS of songs, others have a minimal selection, while still others only have a jukebox with a grab bag of tunes. Some clubs let you bring in CDs or USBs if there's a song you want to dance to that the DJ doesn't have, some DJs are willing to download songs for you, while others don't let you bring in outside music or even take requests for what they do have.
Based on your posts, I'm guessing you've never actually danced before. Honestly, don't over think your music this much. The set-up at the club is what it is and all you can do is work with it - or find another club, but there are much better reasons to switch clubs. Knowing different set-ups among various clubs isn't going to help you because yours might not be like any of them.
Thank you and I appreciate the input and responses. Last night was my first night and we get to pick the kind of music we dance to but I'm not sure about making specific requests yet. Now I'm wondering if I would be expected to tip a few dollars per song request or just give them a bigger tip at the end of hte night.

i always tip around 4 or 5 bucks for a requested, specific stage set of my preferred songs, and i find they do it more readily if you tip them then and there ( but my first club you were required to tip at the end of the night, so yeah, every club is different. at the one im at now there is no required tipping).
