I will be moving to houston in a few months. And was wondering how I would go about getting a apartment. S.W area preferably.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'going about getting an apartment in Houston...' It's pretty much the same as any other city. There are apartment finder sites, HAR.com, and driving around looking, which may not be feasible depending on how far away you're moving from. If you're looking for recommendations, I'd say the Post Oak area, and plan to spend $1200+/month.
I was saying as far as showing proof of income in order to get the apartment.

Most 'corporate' landlords will want to see past year tax returns from 'self-employed' prospective tenants. Secondary to that would be bank statements showing regular deposits being made to a separate 'business' account.
Renting from a 'mom & pop' landlord sidesteps income verification regulations / policies that apply to 'corporate' landlords.
Post Oak is nice, Im in Sugarland. Pretty much anywhere SW is good. Apartment finder is a good start.

Actually I lease a house in Sugarland but as far as apartments go it's not hard. Just like you're looking for a place, somebody out there has a spot they're trying to rent...thrifty nickel isn't a bad place to look, Craigslist has some good places too. It's kinda hit or miss tho. Apartment finder is usually pretty reliable.
