    Default Really painful...

I need help. I've worked three shifts so far, but it's slow, and I'm new, which adds up to not a whole lot of money at the end of the night. I need to work more shifts, but my knees and legs are so bruised and my feet so blistered from floorwork/pole/shoes that I just can't take extra shifts.

I can feel the blisters even through bandaids, and the bruises hurt so badly that I can't do any floorwork at all - even squatting down is difficult because it stretches the bruises out.

What do you do to make the bruises hurt less?

Moleskin for blisters. Works wonders for me when breaking in new ice skate boots, as they are heat-molded to my feet. Check athletic stores, shoe stores or local pharmacy.

Ice/heat tender bruised areas, & try not to stress them too much until your body begins to toughen up, most of it will in time. You can find more on this in Body Business.

Take your shoes off for lap dances to make them easier on your thighs and give your feet a break. Wear thick over the knee socks for padding when doing floor work - they'll cover the bruises and offer some protection from new ones and the shoes. Minimize how much floor work you do as well. Minimize how much you do on stage in general - think lingerie modeling with slow transitions between poses.

When I first started dancing I used icey hot.. the bruises will heal.. try to spend more time standing up.. I usually don't get on the floor unless they are making it rain.. don't over work a dollar.. avoid shoes with the clear plastic.. I have shoes like that and they kill my feet compared to my other shoes.. if they are two tight stretch them out or get the next size up..

My club is mostly floor work. One thing I learned was to avoid putting weight on my knees and cover my legs in legwarmers or fishnets so I can slide around easier, using my arms when I can to hold myself up and rolling around all over the place. My knees and my arms are both happier for it.

If your blisters are from the edges of the shoes, I have seen girls melt them with a lighter to soften them.

Recommendations for pain (in all its glory)

Frozen peas - works better than ice, smaller pieces work around curves better

Epsom salt baths - muscle pain relief mostly, good for after your shift

Arnica gel - Odorless and clear. This is for bruising and is available as a gel you can rub on. It is actually proven to make your bruises go away faster and will relieve alot of your pain. I use it on my knees right before I hit the floor at work when I am bruised and am able to do floorwork still

Spray-on deodorant - Spray on your feet (top and bottom) at the beginning of your shift - this will prevent your feet from sweating as much which will help prevent chafing. It also helps to create a barrier between you and the shoe - the plastic rubs the powder, not you.

    Ibprofen - Non-steroid anti-inflammatory. 'Nuff said.

In addition, if you are wearing clear plastic Cinderella-style stripper shoes:

When you first get them, use a hairdryer to warm up the plastic and then insert your feet. This molds the plastic for a better fit. You may have to do this a couple times the first night or two, just make them comfortable.

Invest in a couple sets of Pleaser shoepads. (Tops they're $5) They are probably the most comfortable and thickest of the ones I've seen on the market. They also are reasonably easy to conceal, even with clear shoes.

Arnicia oil is a strippers best friend. It helps too if you go to the gym as well , to build strength and endurance for long shifts.

This is brilliant. I will be doing this.

Thanks, all. Some really great ideas here. I've had two days off, so hopefully my shift tomorrow will be easier.

Everyone has already left a lot of great advice. I definitely had the same problems with bruised knees when I first started. I also had a lot of lower back pain from lying on the stage with my legs up. I bought some thigh-high leg warmers and these helped a lot. The only thing I might add to the advice listed above is dab white vinegar on your bruises. It increases blood flow near the skin's surface, so it will dissipate the blood that has pooled in the bruised area- witch hazel works like this too. Also rotating between icing and heating the bruise will help the blood flow. One of the dancers used to tell me to eat pineapples and bananas too.

But don't worry, it will get easier and less painful! I don't remember how long it took to get used to it, maybe a month or two, but the skin on my knees kind of toughened up, almost like a light callous, and I stopped getting bruises so badly. Now I've been dancing almost two years and even though I spend a lot of time on the floor, I never feel any pain when I'm on my knees and I hardly ever get anything but small bruises every now and then. Just use those leg warmers if you can and push through, it'll get better soon!

I don't have a lot to add, everything's been covered really . But, if you need to wear band aids to cover the blisters-wear knee high stockings over them to hide the band aids (works a treat ). Wearing them will help prevent new blisters too.

I bruise easily and take a rutin and bioflavonoid supplement to help prevent it (vinegar helps to fade existing bruises). Avoiding supplements that thin the blood also helps i.e. fish oil etc

Are your shoes the clear plastic kind? If so-shape them to your feet with a hair dryer etc so that they fit better and hopefully they will be more comfortable.

I love my epsom salt baths! I even have a salt formulated specifically for sore muscles. Twice a week I also use an exfoliating sugar scrub. And twice a month I get a pedicure. They rub my feet and legs so much it feels great! Occasionally I upgrade to a fancy pedicure when I feel I deserve it.

And definitely do some pre-shift stretch to avoid some of the soreness.

Eat bananas! Potassium is good for people who bruise easily. Also you can put the inside of the peel on any bad bruises and it will speed up healing process as well as reduce the pain and discoloration.
