Hey ladies!
I was approached by my sister in law to help her make some homemade spa treats as gifts for a friend's bridal shower. I've compiled a list of some things I do at home to improve my hair/skin/face. Please add any recipes you may know!
For most of these below, allow to sit for 5-15 minutes.
Hair: Add a hot towel on top for a hot treatment.
Scalp-
1- For dandruff I scrub my scalp with a salt & olive oil mixture then I rinse with diluted white vinegar, focusing on the scalp. Very good after a sunburnt scalp has healed and is peeling. Shampoo if the oil is too heavy.
2- Diluted apple cider vinegar as a clarifying shampoo.
Tresses- mix and match
1- egg yolk - heavy moisturizing hair mask
2- greek yogurt full fat - medium moisturizing
3- avocado- medium heavy moisturizing
4- mayonnaise- very heavy moisturizer (I would not use this on fine hair, only on rougher/thicker textures)
5- honey - medium light moisturizer (it's sticky but it works)
6- lemon juice - definitely mix with a moisturizing mask, this is great to add shine
7-beer- use as a cold rinse when you're about to get out of the shower. Adds shine and volume (do not rinse out, smell will dissipate)
Body: add a nice smelling essential oil (lavender, peppermint) if you don't like the smell of olive oil. I LOVE almond oil
1-Moisturizing scrub- mix olive oil and sugar (not salt!!) slough off dead skin, rinse and use remaining olive oil as a shaving lubricant. If your razor has 4 or more razor blades, I'd use a shaving cream on top to prevent razor burn. Rinse off the sugar well before you shave! If you don't shave, leave olive oil on skin as a moisturizer. Great exfoliator before you get a wax but beware of the extra oil, if you self wax, use baby powder.
2- To help with cellulite- mix olive oil with used coffee grinds, scrub on thighs and butt with a body brush in upwards circular motions.
3- Dark, rough elbows/knees: put salt or sugar on half a lemon, rub as if juicing on the elbow or knee. MOISTURIZE after!!
Feet:
1- Use a toothbrush and oil on toenails after removing nail polish. Scrub soles with olive oil and salt (table salt, kosher salt is too rough). Rinse off salt, wrap feet in saran warp and put socks on overnight. Viola! Super soft feet and cuticles! Push back with an orange stick.
2- Yellowed nails from polish- remove polish and soak a cotton ball in hydrogen peroxide, leave ball on toenail 15-20 minutes.
Face:
1- Anytime I cut fruit to eat, I'll take a piece (nearest to the seeds) and use it on my face as a mask, let sit for 10-15, rinse:
Apple: great as a toner
Papaya: enzymes are like a peel
Citrus: lemon can be used to lighten skin
Cucumber: under-eye, can also blend and mix with cornstarch to make a mask if you have very deep set eyes (slices won't reach)
2- For troublesome under-eyes, mix 1 part turmeric with 1-2 parts greek yogurt, make into a paste and use as a mask. Let sit for 20-30 min
3- Micro-dermabrasion: Use 1-2 NON COATED aspirin tablets, mix wit a few drops of water. Gently scrub into face. Use fresh lemon juice with a cotton ball and spread over entire area. Let sit for 15 min. Mix a teaspoon of baking soda with water and use as a scrub to gently remove mixture from face, rinse with cool water. DO NOT USE if you have an aspirin allergy or diseases that prevent you from using aspirin.
4- Exfoliator: baking soda with a few drops of water, gently scrub into face, rinse with cool water. 1-2x per week
5- Pore tightening: beat one egg white with a few drops of water. Spread one face. Let sit 15 min. Rinse with cool water.
or
6- Blend oatmeal into powder, mix with water, spread over face. Let sit 20 min, rinse with cool water.
7- Moisturizing mask- spread honey over face, let sit 15 minutes, rinse.
Teeth:
1- Brush with baking soda daily. It exfoliates teeth and help keep them white
2- ONLY 1X per week, mix baking soda and fresh lemon juice into a paste. Brush onto teeth. Let sit 15 min and rinse. AMAZING to whiten teeth. This can wear down enamel so do not use more than once per week and *gently* use a very soft bristled tooth brush. You can use hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as a rinse or to replace the lemon above, still brush gently.
3- To freshen breathe after a meal, drink a cup of peppermint tea, then brush teeth AND tongue.
Also, a tip you ladies will love me for: If you get your period, while it' still fresh on your g-string or clothes, any color, just hold it over the sink while you pour hydrogen peroxide on the stain, it'll fizz and pretty much rinse off. If it's not fresh you may need to scrub a bit with cold water but even if the stain is older, it'll rinse off fairly easily.
Question: When I was in the UK, I could not find hydrogen peroxide anywhere, and any pharmacist I asked looked at me like I had two heads. Do any of you gals know what it is called or what I would ask for? I said H2O2 but they still didn't know what I meant.
