    Default coloring after bleaching tips?

so i bleached my hair a bit too blond, or rather my hair stylist did. i thought it would look great, and it does..with a ton of makeup on. but without makeup, i look totally washed out, sick, and 5 years older. my natural color is a brownish red ( light auburn i guess) and i want to go back to that because i will look the best and i won't have to spend loads of cash every month that im trying to save! my hair is a light yellow ( not white bleach blond or anything) but i hear that after bleaching your hair it becomes porous and won't hold color. is that true? anyone have any tips? i got it dyed 2 weeks ago, and i've been moisturizing up a storm ( my hair is so thick and strong i don't think its that damaged). i don't want to go in there and have them say "sure, we can do that! its gunna be 200 bucks" when its not going to work. i know i should wait, but it really does not flatter me at all and i feel ick :p

Just go to Sallys and buy a 20 volume creme developer and then a few different colors of toners. I bleached mine platinum at home from almost black (in 1 day too), and then dyed it darker a bit... like a beigey blonde color. I like 8GN mixed with 12N. Its probably the same as a 9GN though. You could always talk to someone at Sallys.

Honestly, if you go to a salon, there's a pretty big chance you'll pay like $200 for a dye job and not even like the color. At least you can experiment til you find a color you like, for a fraction of the price, if you do it at home. Its not bleaching so it won't really damage your hair much.

Porous hair actually grabs dye more, so that won't be an issue. Some people say hair will turn green if you use an ash shade. If you use something with a red base, you'll be fine. 10 volume developer will be even gentler than 20, so I'd say try that and use a deep moisturizer after.

So what kind of hair needs 30, 40 developer? I'm about to bleach and then dye my new extensions- I'd hate to screw it up! I planned on buying 30 developer.

Those are used for hair that needs a lot of lift. If there's not a lot of damage already, 30 might be okay if you don't leave it on long (like 15 minutes, maybe 20). 40 will likely cause noticeable damage. Most stylists recommend you use 20 max, leave it on for 20 minutes, and do it again in two weeks if your hair isn't the shade you want but is healthy enough for a retry. I ignored that and did 40. Got my blonde, then a ton fell out when I toned it a few weeks later. Lesson learned </3

No not unless you leave an ash (or a neutral) dye on your hair for a reeeeeeally long time.

10 developer (not toner) makes your hair really dark. If you want to stay in the blonde range, a 20 developer is better. 30 is too strong for toning unless you're trying to make it way lighter.

For a red base, use a golden (G) toner. And if porousness is a concern, make sure your hair has been deep conditioned and maybe lightly coat it with coconut oil. I coated my hair heavily in coconut oil for like 2 days before bleaching it in 1 try black to platinum, and it had almost no damaged. And I have fine hair, so you would think it would have.

Thats for bleaching dark hair to light. I bleached mine from almost black to a platinum blonde in 1 try using a mix of 30 and 40 + the loreal blue bleaching powder. And mixed in unred to get rid of any brassiness. You can also use those #s to mix with "high lift" toners (generally marked with a 12 or "high lift" on the box).

I think they just say that because it *can* cause damage, but not if you know what you're doing. Most people don't need to use it, but for bleaching hair black to blonde, you definitely do. I'm not a cosmetologist though, but I've studied it and learned through trial and error.

Sallys is salon-grade products. Many cosmetologists shop there for supplies. Most of the girls who work behind the counter at Sallys are cosmetologists as well.

I suggested a toner in my post up there: . You mix the 20 developer with a toner from Sallys. You can try a bunch of different ones and it doesn't really do any damage.

I wouldnt risk doin this yourself. Any color with ash in it typically turns hair green but you dont really know what you will end up with. Once your hair is bleached it can go to dark easily, the blonde may end up showing through a few weeks after that but at that point you can just re die the hair again. I have used colors from sallys when my hair was bleach blonde and it turned out great but everyone's hair is different. Also, I would wait a little bit longer before doing any dieing to your hair. yes, its not damaged now but you dont want it to get that way. Also be sure you wont want blonde again because going from dark to blonde is a pain in the ass to do it where your hair wont fall out or get a brassy tone to it. trust me I know

Oh I just saw that you are trying to go brown now. I thought you just wanted to change the tone of blonde. Okay so your best bet would be to buy a golden (g) toner... maybe a 4G shade? It depends on how dark or light of brown you want. 2G if you want basically black and maybe a 6G if you want really light brown. 20 developer should be fine, but ask the Sallys staff if you should opt for a 10 developer instead. Also make sure to coat your hair in like coconut oil or another serum so that if absorbs evenly since its porous.

When I was younger, I went from blonde to brown using box dyes even (usually Medium Golden Brown shades) and that worked out nicely. Though I know box dyes typically have a lot of damaging stuff in them, so Sallys is probably a better option. I just don't think going to a salon is necessary when the results never come out the way you want them to anyway majority of the time.

Yeah go with 30. When I was dying my weaves, I found that a 40 Vol. developer could fuck the hair up something fierce.

It takes a bit longer but it's worth the time if you want your hair to last.

Toner does NOT brighten color. It deposits color to balance your hair shade.

Do you have a picture of the exact color you're going for?
Is there a pic somewhere that represents the color your hair is currently?

As a person who's been through the bleaching-then-dying wringer, I think I can help you out.

    Thanks Sophia, I bought a 30.

Does it matter if it's just one step bleach? I thought all of them had to be mixed with powder and the bleach product together, but I found one that just said to mix with the color dye (not going to do that- I'm going to bleach then add another color on top) so I bought that one.
