Dizzy Apartments, Camming/Adult Work, and Fear

For those of you applying for apartments as a cammodel/adult artist do you ever get afraid you won't be approved or afraid that you will be discovered and evicted? My life would appear normal working the 9-5 as I do run a new small vanilla business but in between jobs and on the weekends I'd be home hustling adult work like caminging, vids, and phone sex. Basically a business woman during the day and an adult performer at night. Flash dance anyone? LOL. I just have this fear that I'll get a great apartment, no one would be curious at first as they'd see me leave for my daily work and then at night hearing me moaning through the walls with NO man coming over. I don't want any nosy complaining neighbors. Am I weird to think this way? Anyone have any tips or experiences? TIA!

Check how thick your walls are! I've been camming from an apartment and thus far have had no issues, although I am lucky enough to only share one wall with a neighbor. I live in a part of the country where really thick walls are the norm, too.

There are a lot of things you can do to muffle sound as well. Tapestries on the walls will help, as will carpeting or any other kind of floor covering. Will you have a room dedicated just to camming?

I just got approved on a new rented house credit check, bank statements, and accountant letter backing up how much i said i earn. Sometimes they ask for 3 years tax returns. I just tell them i do freelance sales and admin x

I'm hoping so, Claire. I'll be paying like $1,800 so I hope to at least get a 2BD or 1BD w/Den. Or, I could just do it in the living room if the windows are decent. I just prefer closing my eyes and lying on a bed when I do phone sex because I can get more into character that way LOL. I remember renting a few years back and they told me the insulation on the windows were good and new. Turns out they were flimsy and you could hear people walking from my bedroom and they could hear me. My upstairs neighbor giggled because when I confessed that I was a phone sex operator, she already knew because she could hear me whenever she took the trash out or walked to and from her car.

I prefer old historic buildings just for the look, feel and thick walls but DC is super modern now that all of the real estate is constantly evolving. Thanks for the tips! I plan on being super cautious and even buying one of those door stoppers and window/door alarms. You can never be too cautious.

My credit sucks monkey balls but I've never been evicted and I've only had two apartments. I did break my lease because they had a mice and ant infestation that they refused to deal with. I'm a little worried about what they will say when someone calls to check up on my history though. I was just honest with the last one and showed them my student (at the time) income/loans and I was approved with no credit check. Here it will be harder because I'll have to probably give 2 security deposits and one month's rent upfront, and provide bank statements/etc. This area is extremely picky unless you get lucky enough to find a private owner. They only deal with government professionals and wealthy ivy leaguers.

At least now you know what to look for! I've been renting for a long time, and I always go into it assuming that the landlord will lie to me, or at the very least talk out his ass about things he knows nothing about. I fell in love with a vintage building once, and then realized that you could hear EVERYTHING echoing down that central corridor. Bring a friend with you while you're looking at apartments, and have him or her walk around, inside, outside, all around, talking loudly. Then you'll know what you have to watch out for. (You can have them just loudly talk about the crown moulding or something, and just apologize to the landlord--"Sorry, I know my friend is kind of obnoxious, but he knows a lot about wiring and architecture so I really value his input...")

Great idea! I'd love to not be woken up by little kiddies running up and down the hallways screaming lol.

Well I rented an apt one time from a big corporation. I told them I was a model.. and i had a fat bank account to prove that I had money, She was just impressed that I had thousands of dollars in my checking account. Didn't really much care what I did for a living.. I was approved based on bank account balance basically..lol

I pay $1700 for a one bedroom and that doesn't include any utilities. I'm moving when my lease is up in August - I cannot afford this place! Good luck girl! Oh - and when I work I just turn the music up loudly... and go to another room. I live in a wood building so there is no sound proofing...worked so far!

I'm on the hunt for a place right now, and I tend to not tell them what I do unless I am specifically asked. I simply offer to let them run a credit check, and then make sure that I tell them that I work from home (so that I cannot be evicted for running a business from my home at a later date).

My advice would be to choose the building wisely - insulation, concrete buildings, look at the heating system and the air vents (forced air heating with vents into the next apartment is HELL - they can hear everything). Oh, and try and figure out the layout of apartments next door/above/below. Do they have a bedroom next to your cam space? I love the look of character buildings too, but they just aren't that practical...Once you are in there, you can do some soundproofing (nothing expensive, but rugs on the wall help), and definitely go over and TALK TO YOUR NEW NEIGHBORS!!! I cannot believe how few people do this, and it can prevent noise complaints like nothing else. Just go over, say "hey, I'm your new neighbor, just wanted to say hi, and let you know that if I'm ever noisy, just pop by and let me know!".

Don't worry too much about people tracking your noise or comings and goings - honestly, I have no idea who my neighbor has over, when, how often, when they leave, when they work....honestly, most people aren't going to care what you are doing, as long as they don't hear it.

As for evictions, double check your lease and your local tenancy laws, and make sure you know your rights. I know that where I am, I cannot be evicted for what I do, as long as they know that I work from home when I move in. I also know that I cannot be evicted for one noise complaint...which is nice to know!

The only thing that really bugs me is the credit/employment reference thing. Luckily, I have good credit, but being self-employed does make life a little harder...sigh

I ended up paying an extra security deposit. I didn't much care, though; where I'm from, security deposit is the same as a month's rent, and where I moved to, security deposit is normally $200. So an extra hundred dollars didn't phase me in the least and I still felt like I was coming out ahead.

Most places will still rent to you as long as you can prove you have the money or are otherwise "good for it".

In New Mexico where I now live, thick walls are very common. Thus far I have not had any issues with neighbors, and I think the fact that I'm always super friendly when I run into them, make chitchat, and generally radiate "nice girl" helps with that too. They also know I'm married, so if they've ever heard anything while I was camming, they probably just wanted to high-five my husband...

God, I wish that the market here was "good" enough to allow me to even offer to pay extra. Slight threadjack/rant....but I am looking right now, and it is killing me.

Open houses usually involve 20+ people, and all they do is skim the applications and pick the "best" one, then check those references. There is no call back, no discussion, no "would you be willing to pay x deposit" or "do you have someone to co-sign". Last week, I called an ad within literally MINUTES of it going up, got to the place to view it in under an hour, and the property manager HAD ALREADY SEEN OTHER PEOPLE. The ad was gone by the end of the day.

I actually have a full on "renter's resume" sitting in a draft e-mail, so that if I get to a place and they say "e-mail your references to apply" I can do it ON THE SPOT. Even then, I get something back saying "it has been rented". And that is with offering years of landlord references and TWO character references (one of whom was my manager from my last vanilla job)...and offering to have a credit check done....AND offering a vet reference to say that my animals are well-cared for and friendly.

Even if I walked in to a viewing waving a briefcase full of cash, it wouldn't matter, because it is almost always the property manager/caretaker that shows it, and then you have to e-mail the actual landlord with your references...and the few times that I have e-mailed BEFORE the showing to try and offer stuff, they are still saying "oh, just e-mail us once you've seen it and know you like it".

It can't be like this everywhere...can it? Not to freak any bbs out - oops....I honestly think that it is just where I am that is insanely competitive and ridiculous. But DAYUM.
