Default Stripper stigma... from other strippers

This girl started chatting to me the other day when I was shopping for a new pair of shoes. She was new in town and going to audition the next day.

She starts asking me about myself and upon finding out that I don't do drugs, don't smoke, live with my much older boyfriend who is totally okay with my dancing, talk to my parents a couple times a week, and am almost done with my bachelors degree, states "Why the hell are YOU a stripper?"

This happens when I switch clubs as well; inevitably there are some stereotypical movie stripper girls with that "fallen from grace" mentality and wonder why a non-fuck-up is dancing. They're almost possessive of their stereotype.

    Anyone else encountered this? Thoughts?

i sadly used to be one of these. almost. one of the girls i used to dance with was studying "women's rights/women's studies" and i said " but..you're a stripper!!!" like that was the opposite of being pro-women's rights. i was such a dumb shit.

Yeah, I hear a lot of girls say that if a dancer says she has her life together she must be lying about it. Especially a dancer who is working on an advanced degree. People will constantly try to catch you in a lie and reveal that you are studying nothing. I think it's too bad that people see it that way. Especially fellow dancers. If you work hard it's a job where within 3 or 4 years you can pay for college, pay for a house, and still have enough money to invest, travel, and enjoy yourself. Then, when you start at a normal job with normal pay you don't have student loans or any other soul crushing debt to worry about. That sounds pretty smart to me. Of course, the majority of the girls either dropped out of college, didn't go to college, got married and divorced too young, or are single moms who want their days free to spend with their kids, but any woman who can put up with dancing and make a profit is strong and smart enough to improve her life with her earnings as long as she doesn't get swept away by all the bad stuff that is available to us.

That's totally how I feel about it. I told the one girl "I'm a stripper because I'm sick of working crummy serving jobs with shitty management who doesn't know what they're doing, I'm too smart to be bossed around by idiots, and I like money and not having to be accountable to someone or have a schedule." She shut up after that.
They can try to "catch" me all they want, I'll pull up my school schedule on my phone for them... let's see their faces when they see "Advanced Organic Chemistry" on there =D .

I think it would actually be interesting if the club put on a presentation or mini class on finances/investing. I wonder if any of those girls would have the lightbulb go off and go "Hey, I should open a savings account and maybe put away some money for a house, or get a retirement account..." Some of them probably have never had a basic finance class, or been taught it by a parent... It might completely astonish them when they realize they could put away a tiny $20/shift and have almost 5k by the end of the year.

How lovely it would be if all strippers were of the same focused, hustler mindset and just turned the club into an even huger, well oiled and terrifying, taking-money-from-men machine. No wallet within 5 miles would be safe!

Excellent post...Sometimes it takes time for a dancer to realize that she must save and that the money will inevitably run out so to say...If she learns at some point to save etc..its better than a dancer who never wises up imho. There are so many judgement calls from the girls I work with that I tend to not want to associate with them much...Definitely not outside of work..They r always fishing for information so they can one up u or talk shit..The less I talk sometimes the better..Sometimes I have a rough time and people can tell..But o well..Im human..Wish I could b a robot and show no weakness but we r all flawed and human...I just overall dont care what they think bc most r backstabbers anyways..

I've encountered it when in new clubs. It's usually only from one or two select girls, and they end up being the drunkest, cattiest girls of the club, inevitably. Most often, it's something like:
"Hey. Why you wanna work here?"
"Oh, I don't know. I heard there's decent money here, so I decided to come by."
"No, I mean why are you a stripper?"
    "For... money?"
"You got a baby or something?"
"No... I'm just working and going to school. No kids."
"Oh, so it's to pay for school then?"
"No... I go to school on scholarships..."
    "Then why are you here?"
"I... uhmm... I have to pee... Bye."

For me, it has seemed like an odd attempt at intimidation. Sort of a "You don't belong here" tactic. Like I said, it's usually only ever one or two girls in a club who will do it, and they're not otherwise charming ladies. So...

I can remember so many instances where this has happened I don't even know where to begin.

I used to work in a dive a long time ago so after I would get off stage I would wash my hands since the poles were dirty. One girl asked me "How are you even a stripper?" because I...like to keep clean? I remember one time getting too close to one of the poles and I got hit with a faint scent of stale vagina. Gross.

I was also one of the few strippers there that didn't have a habit other than drinking occasionally. I'm certain the other strippers saw me as a stuck up or something because I wouldn't smoke pot with them, do coke with them, or whatever else. Not that I think there is anything wrong with those things or people who use drugs recreationally, I just would not prefer to do those things at work.

I always love how shocked some of the girls get when they realize how smart I am. Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I'm a lot more book smart than some of the dancers and it always surprises them when I use certain words or spit out facts. Smart girls gotta hustle too! I could be slaving away at an office job, but it makes more sense to me to use my resources whenever possible and in this case it just happens to be looks and charm.

I don't get when people say "you're too smart to be here" because the way I see it I'm on the fast track to getting into my career. Seems pretty smart to me.

i feel offended when guys are like this is disrespectful to women
who are you to judge what I do???
i do what i do because i want to and i can

I got this alllllllll the time when I danced! To the point where I was actually slightly offended.

Getting degrees takes time. And money. Interning takes time. And is essentially working for free. Why not work in the adulty realm PART-TIME for LOTS of cash to be able to complete these things faster?

The amount of people who let the media rule their brains astounds me. I am literally in shock everyday by at least 1 idiot comment that comes out of someone's mouth. An idiot comment based on some stereotype that isn't even remotely true.

At the end of the day, we're all going to be dead sometime (lol). So just do what you want.

Most of the frivolous spender girls I'm referring to seem to work 5 days a week (I think they're insane) so that's 20 shifts a month, times 12 months a year, equals 4800... so almost 5k, especially if you have a decent interest rate.

I LOVE your sig GlamourRouge. That's such a good point from Melonie. I tell guys that ask why I'm in the club that it's the best money and "job security" you can get in this economy..

No no, I didn't take into account that you might mean that many shifts. I only work two days. I'm trying to put half my income away because I don't really have high living expenses/bills. I have a shopping addiction though D: I do want to learn more about investing, I'm a little clueless. Ok, a lot.

Hmm... perhaps it is only me, but I find it slightly hard to believe that a majority of dancers who unfortunately don't meet your definition of superlative criteria actually view themselves as fuck-ups? I think that might actually be a more of an external observation--which is fine, dandy and understandable. Even if they do view themselves as such, I think this is largely due to the repetitive exposure of that particular opinion.

I never knew what to say to this. I had no kids, was married, had a day job as an admin assistant, was working on my bachelors degree, didn't drink at work, never even tried most drugs....I learned to just lie about it. Some girls just seemed to think I was taking money from their kids that I didn't even need. It was bizarre since my regs would have never spent a dime on most of the ones that were pissy.

The repeatedly being viewed as fuck-ups may very well be why they would view themselves that way; whatever term they use, they seem to know that they are not going the "expected" route by society, because they are very young and have kids, or a drug problem, or whatever their "not societally preferred" thing be. But they seem to take great pride in going against the grain, and whether they are just defensive because everyone treats them like screw ups, I don't know.
I certainly don't treat them any differently than any other girls, but they are very cliquey and once they deem you not one of them, they are the rudest girls on the planet and often try to haze any new younger, less hardened girls. That is really the only point I was trying to go for.
I suppose a better term would be "those who fall under the negative stripper stereotype".

Haha, yeah I should have clarified... but there are LOTS of crazies that work 5 days in my club, and they'll work 8 hours too. I'll sometimes do 5 but I only work 5 hours at a time because my start-of-burnout point is at around 3.5 hours... I have the same saving strategy! I used to put half my paycheck away, and now with dancing I'll alternate each shift between "spending" and "saving". If you've got low bills, no better time to save. People think I'm insane for saving so much though =P
