Dizzy Webcam video recording trouble, please help.

First of all, I’m sorry if any of my questions have been answered before. I’ve done lots of research here on SW and outside, but nothing seems to be working, so I figured I would detail my situation and ask for help. I am very new to this, never having recorded nor edited any videos before. I’m VERY confused.

My aim is to record videos I can post to C4S, ELM and my own profiles on camsites, etc. I want to record a master file in full HD and then edit/convert it to smaller and/or lower resolution clips – like recording a 10 min video at 1920px x1080px and then editing it to a 5 min version in full HD, another version in 720p, and a last one for mobile devices, all from the master 10 min full HD master recording. Also, If possible, I’d like to use the same recording software when broadcasting, maybe through splitcamming, if necessary.

My equipment is a Logitech C920 webcam, and a Dell Inspiron I5 @2.50 GHz with Windows 7 Home Basic.

I have tried recording videos using the Adobe Encoder, but it seems no free editing software handles this type of file and trying to convert it proved to be a pain in the ass, since it’s hard to find good free converters and the results I got from what I’ve tried were really not good at all (changes colors, delayed images, all sorts of bad stuff).

I have tried recording with Windows Movie Maker and, although it seemed to go fine, WMM itself doesn’t recognize the video when I try editing it – it just gives me a black screen with the audio. When I go check the original recording, it’s all good, but I can’t edit it. I also tried recording with Debut, but when I use HD settings it just gives me a single frame and the audio track.

Can someone please point me what I can do? I really just need a reliable HD recording software which I can use with my webcam and delivers a usable HD format (not f4v like the Encoder), and a simple editing software I can use to trim and change resolutions. Any suggestions?

TLR: I want to record HD videos and then edit them.
Logitech C920 webcam, Dell Inspiron I5 @2.50 GHz with Windows 7 Home Basic

Thanks in advance for any help!

VLC Player = Free and can convert filetypes

Many girls record with the default Logitech software.

When I used my webcam for videos, I always used the Logitech software to record with. As far as simple editing and converting, I use freemake video converter to change file types (you can set bitrate to adjust video quality and trim/edit clips a a bit as well). It's definitely not a full-featured editor though. I'd just take a couple of days to familiarize yourself with a good editing software of your choice. It probably won't even take that long, but if you want to get into more complicated editing later, you'll have the tools. I have used Camtasia Studio, Cyberlink PowerDirector and Premiere Pro to edit videos before and the basic trimming of footage and deleting in all of those is pretty much the same, I probably got used to each program after editing about 3-5 clips with each one.

NCH Videopad pro is what I use to edit videos. Trimming the video is very simple, and you can render your video in any popular file format. I also use the Logitech software to record videos from my webcam.

I use Videopad Pro too. Are you able to convert files to WMV? That format always looks a little fuzzy to me, so I use AVI. If I want to convert them to WMV I have to re-convert them using ConverterLite afterwards. I also use Videopad to watermark.

To answer the op's question, I also use Logitech's software to record from my webcam.

^I don't have to convert the files at all if I've used my Logitech webcam because it records in WMV. I render the video as a data file. See how you can select pretty much any file type? I save every video in its native format. Name: untitled.JPG

I don't convert my AVI files at all. At first it was because I couldn't find a way without compromising my video quality, but then I got lazy I know I should have WMV versions, but hey.

I record in the max setting using my c920 and the logitech software. I then add the file to Windows Live Movie Maker for editing and saving in different WMV sizes, I have made a custom size for HD720. For changing to other formats and sizes I use Freemake Video Converter and Prism.

Also, if you are seeing a black screen when you import into WMM, it's b/c WMM only reads certain types of files. You can convert it first and then open in WMM. I used to not be able to import iphone video into WMM and had to convert the files first, but I haven't run into conversion issues lately, so you may just need to update?

I've heard that WMM really degrades video quality, but I have yet to shell out the money for a better program.

Problem is WMM showed a black screen even when I used it to capture the video. It saved a WMV that I could see on VLC and other software, but it just wouldn't show on WMM screen. Weird, isn't it?

I have just formatted my laptop and the black screen issue with the Windows Movie Maker is gone. I also installed the Logitech software and it does a good job recording videos @ full HD. Now it seems I only need to familiarize myself with the editing programs and file conversions.

Thanks to everyone, lots of good suggestions here <3

Livia, I hope you don't mind me posting on this thread but it's related so I didn't want to start a new one

I also have a C920 and I recorded a video using the Logitech software. It says that it's an MP4. It wouldn't open. I downloaded VLC Player and tried to open it in there as well as convert it but nothing happens. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Sorry if this is a dumb noob question. I also asked on the Logitech forums and did a google search but couldn't find anything.

No problem at all, MissSassyPickles, we're in this together!

That's weird, have you tried opening it on an editing software like Windows Movie Maker? I haven't stumbled with that before...

I just tried it, and a first the file wouldn't even show when I clicked file > open in the default logitech folder. Then I tried again and it showed up, but when I opened it it just shows a film role with yellow triangles on it and doesn't tell me why...

I add my Logi recorded clips to Windows Live Movie Maker...have you got the latest version? Maybe it's that.
