Default Bras Make Breasts "Saggier" says recent study

    Drop the bras? Maybe.

Bras Make Breasts "Saggier", 15-year French Study Reveals

Women have long been told that a good bra can help support the chest, relieve back pain and prevent sagging. However, a new 15-year French study reveals the opposite: bras do little to reduce back pain and, over time, they can actually make breasts sag even more.

Researcher Prof. Jean-Denis Rouillon, a sports science expert from the University of Besançon in eastern France claims that "bras are a false necessity," according to The Local.

"Medically, physiologically, anatomically - breasts gain no benefit from being denied gravity," said Rouillon. "On the contrary, they get saggier with a bra."

Rouillon and his team spent years measuring the changes in the breasts of 330 women using a simple slide rule and caliper at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (University Hospital) in Besançon, where he carried out his research.
He found that no evidence that bras helped ease back pain. Instead, he found that the chest supports could even add to the problem.
According to The Connexion, the findings suggest that breasts would gain more tone and support themselves if no bra was used. Researchers explain that bras limit the growth of supporting breast tissues, leaving the breast to wither and degrade more quickly.

The study found that women who took off their bras for good experienced a 7mm lift in their nipples each year they didn't wear a bra. Researchers also found that bra-less women developed firmer breasts and saw their stretch marks fade.
Some of the women who took part in Rouillon's study told France Info that not wearing a bra helped ease their back pains.
Capucine, a 28-year-old participant in Rouillon's study, swears by the results and hasn't worn a bra for two years.
"There are multiple benefits: I breathe more easily, I carry myself better, and I have less back pain," Capucine said, according to France Info.
However, Rouillon says the findings do not mean all women should throw away their bras.
"It would be dangerous to advise all women to stop wearing their soutien-gorge as the women involved were not a representative sample of the population," Rouillon said, according to The Connexion.
While his initial results "validated the hypothesis that the bra is a false 'need'," he says that women who have been wearing bras for a long time would not gain any benefit from stopping now.

    Interesting.

I don't believe it though, not for a minute. Have you ever seen national geographic magazines? I rest my case

It might be okay to go braless if you are small chested but for those of us who have huge naturals it is uncomfortable, sweaty and sometimes even painful to go without. A comfy bra feels so much better to me.

Yeah, a friend of mine is about my size (short/petite) but has like at least 32D's. When she isn't wearing a bra, like if she's just around the house in a t-shirt, she sometimes holds her boobs lol. Because if she just lets the hang without a bra, it's very uncomfortable for her.

Plus, regardless of the boobs size, if you don't wear a bra and you're out in public and get chilly your nipples might show through. lol.

There are so many things wrong with this study, it's not very scientific.

Firstly, you would have to see the data on the volume of breast tissue the participants had. If it was mostly small chested women, the results would be skewed. It should be a representative sample of the population and therefore include skinny ladies, heavy ladies, small busts, and large.

Secondly they would need a control group, and to have those women be wearing actually properly fitting bras. That's a huge part! Most people are not wearing the correct bra size, and it can actually cause a lot of problems.

Thirdly, the name of the study is incredibly misleading. They say it is a 15 year study, but that does not mean they have followed the same ladies for 15 years. It appears to have been many women over shorter periods.

The only thing that actually interests me about this is the concept that the connective tissue can atrophy if it is always supported. That actually makes quite a bit of sense.

Even before I got boobs and was a 32c, going braless was just not an option a lot of the time. They would bounce like crazy and it hurt! I think it is silly to suggest that bras do not benefit the boobies. Plus they make them look nice.

Saw this reported on another site. Actually, I saw this same "study" on a website about 4 years ago, if not more. I tried to find it after but it was gone.
On the site they had a picture of tons of boobs people had submitted (supposedly) and when you moused-over them it said their bra size and how often they wore a bra.
Of course, all the "nice" boobs were of women who allegedly never wore bras. All the "bad" boobs (I hate describing them that way, but you get what I mean) were from women who always wore bras. The correlation was too perfect to be coincidence, they'd obviously set it up that way.

What they say about atrophy of connective tissue sounds logical, but I don't know enough about that stuff to know if it's actually true. But the article is contradictory. "Women who took off their bras for good experienced a 7mm lift in their nipples each year they didn’t wear a bra" but yet "women who have been wearing bras for a long time would not gain any benefit from stopping now" and in the original article, "He suggested that girls who started wearing a bra once their breasts first started to appear would soon become dependent as the supporting muscle structure would degrade."

The original article also says that "Bras do nothing to help support a woman’s breasts."

So which is it? Either bras are so supportive the connective/supportive tissue atrophies or they offer no support? How is it that bras offer enough support from gravity that the connective/supportive tissues atrophy and at the same time the whole boob itself is pulled enough to sag? I have a hard time buying that the sag is caused from the atrophy alone. And if f we're doomed once we start wearing bras, how did these women see an improvement? I got boobs around 14 or 15. Either all the girls he was examining were teenagers (and most teenagers have perky boobs anyway!) or this is bullshit.

there was also an article about how bras caused breast cancer, i dont think i believe any of it..doesn't really matter though ( for me anyways) since i never wear a bra and don't need one! annoyng pesky things..most women wear the wrong sized bra (fact, seen it so many times) so maybe that's a contributor.

I wear bras almost 24/7 except in the shower to prevent my boobs from sagging... I hope this study isn't true!

Found another article on it... http://mobile.reuters.com/article/id...30412?irpc=932

"The suspension system of the breasts degenerates,Rouillon said, explaining that bras also unnaturally hamper circulation.
"But a middle-aged women, overweight, with 2.4 children? I'm not at all sure she'd benefit from abandoning bras," he added.

That makes a little more sense.
