Angry Model Scouting at Eating Disorder Clinics

I love fashion... but the powers-that-be in that industry make me so mad at times!

Take this lovely little tactic that some Swedish model scouts utilize... Lurk in or near a clinic that treats bulimic/anorexic individuals. Find a girl that is... oh I dunno... 14 years old... Tell her that she's PERFECT for the runway, hand them your business card.

    Crafty. Very crafty.

Let's look at it from the recruiter/scout's perspective: Gals with bulimia and/or anorexia are skinny! They (unlike those icky normal, naturally thin-ish models) don't need to be told to lose weight... they are MOTIVATED... by a disorder... but Motivated none the less! It's a win-win. Gals get rewarded (I'm talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars per campaign rewarded, yeah that kind of rewarded, cha-ching!) for being super skinny. The agency gets a model that has the INITIATIVE to restrict her caloric intake within an inch (or centimeter--- this is Sweden we are talking about) of her life. And the agency profits, the scouts get paid, the clients are so happy that they needn't open the door for the models... these models can slink in through the cracks on the side or underneath... the really good ones can squeeze through the side with the hinges... FABULOUS! Fashion folks are too luxurious and avant-garde for models that take up (ugh... gross!) 3-Dimensions.

Money money money money money money moneymoneymoneymoney for everyone... and the teenage girl with a disorder gets the prize of forever associating her value and worth with her weight... and money too... but at what cost?

this sucks. i kind of resent the fashion industry for shoving thin in people's faces for so long that now people feel "skinny hate" for naturally thin women and feel its ok to bash them into the ground verbally in an effort to rebel against the fashion "norm". this is even worse

If you have Netflix, check out the documentary Girl Model. It's very well made and touches on a similar topic.

As a girl who just doesn't look proportional with curves (tiny tits) I'm either a blob or really skinny. I've had insults on both ends of the spectrum and let me tell you...being insulted for being "too skinny" hurts just as much as being "too fat." Thank you for noticing the "skinny hate." Peeps just think I'm being the bitch pretending to have problems when I talk about this.

There is nothing wrong with being skinny or even being underweight (which isn't always the same thing). There is a serious problem when a girl has an eating disorder and and that thin. A girl with an eating disorder has serious body issues and being thrown into an industry where it is based on looks makes the disease even worse.

Then again there is always the irony that models are generally skinnier than the average women yet the average woman is overweight.

i feel your pain! me too, i have tiny tits im very small and childish looking but when i gain weight its just "baby fat" all over not in a curvy shape pituitary body type they call it..on the plus side, we alway appear younger! ok end threadjack lol.
oh and i totally agree this is bad kellydancer, i was just saying the modeling/fashion industry is getting so ridiculous that i can understand why people get skinny hate even though its just as wrong as fat hate.

It's so sad because there are so many women who have body issues and it's getting worse and younger. I hear my 1st grade girls where I teach religious ed worried about being thin and it disturbs me. Where did all of this come from? Why is it getting worse while women get fatter? I was thinking about the 80's-early 90's modeling with models like Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell and how they would be considered fat now in modeling. To me yes they were thin, but what I consider realistic, not a weight most women can't reach.

i think being THAT thin is only "in" in the fashion industry..i see much more girls trying to look like kim kardashian and nicki minaj..thin with huge boobs and ass, all gravity defying..which is damn near impossible unless you were genetically very blessed or get plastic surgery. i hate that one body type has to be the be all and end all..and that the different body types have to war with each other instead of blaming those responsible for making them feel ashamed

It really is, and I meet very few men who like very thin women. I'm not saying men like big women, just that most don't like very thin from what I see. Personally I don't see anything hot about Kim Kardashian or Nicki Minaj either but neither one is very thin, though are smaller than many think. Incidentally most (but not all)women I know with big butts also have big other parts, and look nothing like them.
