I love fashion... but the powers-that-be in that industry make me so mad at times!
Take this lovely little tactic that some Swedish model scouts utilize... Lurk in or near a clinic that treats bulimic/anorexic individuals. Find a girl that is... oh I dunno... 14 years old... Tell her that she's PERFECT for the runway, hand them your business card.
Crafty. Very crafty.
Let's look at it from the recruiter/scout's perspective: Gals with bulimia and/or anorexia are skinny! They (unlike those icky normal, naturally thin-ish models) don't need to be told to lose weight... they are MOTIVATED... by a disorder... but Motivated none the less! It's a win-win. Gals get rewarded (I'm talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars per campaign rewarded, yeah that kind of rewarded, cha-ching!) for being super skinny. The agency gets a model that has the INITIATIVE to restrict her caloric intake within an inch (or centimeter--- this is Sweden we are talking about) of her life. And the agency profits, the scouts get paid, the clients are so happy that they needn't open the door for the models... these models can slink in through the cracks on the side or underneath... the really good ones can squeeze through the side with the hinges... FABULOUS! Fashion folks are too luxurious and avant-garde for models that take up (ugh... gross!) 3-Dimensions.
Money money money money money money moneymoneymoneymoney for everyone... and the teenage girl with a disorder gets the prize of forever associating her value and worth with her weight... and money too... but at what cost?
What in the Holy Heck Fuck World are we living in?
