Default anyone familiar with Westside / Southbay LA area ?

I'm trying to make a move out that way but I'm totally unfamiliar with the people and the area. I go to school in Ktown and work in Downtown but dont have huge qualms about commuting and sitting in traffic (cali native), as long as my home base is @ the beach. I'm single, 24 y/o and stay busy working and studying, but I do like to party and would like to meet some new people who aren't from the club. I heard Venice is good for singles but it's pretty dirty. I'd like to actually be able to go in the ocean without feeling like water trash -- anyone know anything about Hermosa/Redondo?

I actually dated a cop who worked in Venice he said NEVER live there! lol. I think its cool to visit but I wouldn't want to live there either bc of the crime and general griminess, it's also expensive. Don't know much about Hermosa, Redondo is really nice but pricey.

As a good middle ground I would suggest Torrance. It is very safe and has a great mall (it's the biggest on the West Coast I think? It holds some kind of record I know that), close to the beach, but it is not as expensive. I don't know if there is a good party scene but there was this one bar I went to that was always really fun called Zebra Room I think? I've never lived in Torrance but my friend lived there and my boyfriend worked there so I was there a lot and have all good things to say about it.

I second Torrance - close enough to the beach without the price-tag. You can find a decent, safe place to live that isn't the size of a closet. Also, if you work Downtown, you can shoot up the 110.

West LA is okay depending on what street you're on. Apts closer to the major streets like Bundy, Sawtelle, etc are probably maintained better.

I'd steer clear of Venice - touristy, expensive, small and dirty. I have a single guy friend who LOVES the beach, works in West LA, and even he refuses to live in Venice. He moved down to Redondo and loves it. His place isn't very big, and for the price he's paying, he could probably get a larger one in Torrance, but he likes living just off the water. It's all about what you value more, I guess.

I agree with Torrance. Lots of things to do and close enough to the beach. But Torrance is pretty large and made up of several areas - some better than others. And of course the closer you physically get to the beach the more moolah it's gonna cost you. Manhattan Beach is gorgeous but very expensive. There is also north of LAX - Playa Del Rey, Marina Del Rey, even Westchester. Reasonable rents, but as always there will be tradeoffs in terms of pricing, noise, etc.

Another option for cheaper digs that are still reasonably close to the ocean would be maybe North Redondo, or even Lawndale, though it can be rather sketchy in some areas. I have been a south bay denizen for a few years now after having successfully gravitated out of the SFV a few years back. It's a great area to live and club.
