Default The pill is messing me up! What to do?

I've been on Ortho-Cyclen for about four months, and am trying to do that nifty thing where you take it continuously and don't have a period at all. It's a nice idea, but this month, I've bled for 18 days, going from light to heavy to light. I'm pretty sure if I'm on the rag for much longer, I'm going to keel over from blood-loss:P What pills are you all on? What has worked best for you? Specific formulas or brands would be good to know for when I next hit up Planned Parenthood. They keep telling me 'weird periods' are normal on the pill and to tough it out, but a two-and-a-half-week period is wrecking my professional life and destroying my sheets. Help!

Some girls can do the continuous pill thing and have it work for them. I'm like you though, and when I first switched to a low-dose pill (I think it was Loestrin), I bled for like two months straight and was a fucking emotional wreck, and that was just with pills that tried to shorten the placebo week, never mind skip it entirely. Many women have what's advertised as "spotting" when they go on the pills that are supposed to keep them off their periods for months at a time. However, a lot of personal anecdotes seem to suggest that some women are getting full-blown period-level bleeding instead. If you stick it out, you might be able to beat your uterus into submission. But I've been on pills since I was 16 or 17, and now at 23, I've only missed a period once in my life, and that was when I switched to Lo-loestrin. (I think, anyway. I've switched so many times this year.) Lo-loestin causes a lot of women to have really short or no periods (anytime I mentioned having just switched to it, girls would tell me not to freak out when I didn't get my period, because it happens to so many on it), so you might have luck with that. I switched to Yaz after a few months on it, so I can't really speak for long-term results.

Thanks for the reply! Is Yaz working out well for you? Are you getting much break-through bleeding?

Yaz has four placebo pills at the end of the month, and I take them. If I don't, I'll just end up bleeding like crazy in a week anyway. My periods usually last 2-3 days on it, but they're always been shortish and light when I don't fuck with them too much, so it's not that bad.

Lo-loestrin definitely killed my periods though. I didn't have one during the first gap at all, and then during the second one, I had very slight spotting that I only noticed once. I would've stayed on it, but it seemed to make my migraines more frequent, and it doesn't have a generic, so after my three free samples, I would've been paying $86/month when anything that's generic has a $0 copay with insurance.

I take the same pill you do and I'm trying to skip the placebo week and just start a new pack every 3 weeks, too. The first couple months I did this, I think I had spotting every single day, but it slowly went away and the last two months I've had no period at all! Yay! However, my body is probably way more adjusted to BC since I've been continuously on it for like 6 years. I also feel like when I very first started taking BC, it took almost a year for my periods to stabilize, and they were extremely unpredictable. Maybe you can try talking to your doc about your plan to eradicate your periods entirely?
    Good luck

The doctor at Planned Parenthood said ths would work for stopping my period, but so far, I'm just bleeding every day! But if you say it worked after a few months, maybe I'll tough it out. It's just driving me crazy.
