    Default Thyroid cancer possibly??

I noticed a marble sized hard immobile lump on my thyroid 2 days ago. I saw the dr and he said it was definately not a gland and it is on the thyroid so he is sending me to get an ultrasound and blood work done. has anyone experienced this? it is slightly painful to touch, hurt when yawning or caughing, slight pain while swallowing. I have some HYPERthyroidism symptoms. I am going to stop searching online as I dont want to psych myself out...but I always thought if a lump is cancerous it would not be painful? thanks guys.

It could be a swollen lymph node or a salvia gland swollen. A type of Infection could be the cause. Those are treated with antibotics. So dont freak out. Huggss

If it's a nodule, and ultrasound and fine needle biopsy report the lump is suspicious, find an Endocrinologist who can do the Afirma genetic testing by Veracyte before letting them remove any part of your thyroid. It is a very new test (only made available in 2012) to determine if a nodule is cancerous or benign. Before test was available, surgeons would have to remove all or part of the thyroid and send it to the lab to see if a lump was cancerous. Many thyroid surgeries proved to be uneccessary because the lumps were not cancer.

Ultrasound and FNA showed mine to be a very suspicioius nodule. If it weren't for the new Afirma Veracyte testing, I wouldn't have a thyroid right now. Genetic testing showed it to be benign, so I was able to avoid complete thyroid removal surgery and a lifetime on thyroid medication.

Keep in mind that most lumps on the thyroid are NOT cancerous.

It probably is a swollen lymph node. Or a raised node. I went through this. If its painful to the touch, doctors are actually happy. Its usually only cancer or something bad if its NOT painful to the touch. However, they will probably remove it anyway if its not something important to your body.

Your right, pain indicated non cancerous lumps. Also, if it is a "mobile" bump which is one that moves when pushed, that is better than one that is "stationary" which is one that stays in place even when pushing it.

NOoooo!! STOP self-diagnosing yourself ladies!! haha! The internet proves baaddd things for those of us that choose to 'investigate" mysterious lumps. I can contest - putting tumeric on a raised lump will NOT bring said lump to a head. Go to a doctor. I had a tumor in my salivary gland years ago. It felt like a pea.
