Breast Cancer Deadlier in Women with Implants

"Breast cancer appears more deadly for women with cosmetic implants, perhaps because it's detected at a more advanced stage.
Point out that the authors urged caution in interpreting the results and called for further study, pointing to lack of adjustment for potential confounders in some of the studies included in the meta-analysis.

Breast cancer appears more deadly for women with cosmetic implants, perhaps because it's detected at a more advanced stage, a meta-analysis showed.

Breast cancer patients were a significant 38% more likely to die from their disease if they had implants than if they didn't, Eric Lavigne, PhD, of Laval University in Quebec, and colleagues reported online in BMJ.

And women with implants were 26% more likely to present with a nonlocalized stage of breast cancer than other women, although a nonsignificant trend at P=0.058.

"Better understanding of the detection of breast cancer and survival patterns following diagnosis of breast cancer among women with implants will aid in giving clear information on the consequences of breast augmentation surgery to these women and their physicians," Lavigne's group wrote.

"The fact that implants may interfere with the early detection of breast cancer is particularly relevant and carries with it important clinical and public health implications," they wrote."

Seems like the govt is trying to make anything that's bad for us illegal. Way to infantilize the American populace....

This is scary, I got mine done a little over two years ago and was told to get mamograms yearly but I never get them, I learned in nursing school the radiation given off during the mamograms contributes to a big enough percentage to not make it worth it to me especially when you start getting them young and I am 25, normal age to get them is 40. So I called about ultrasounds as an alternative but they say that is only for spot checking like if you find a lump. I am wondering, has anyone else heard of any alternatives to breast cancer screens that dont give off radiation?

@Papillonluvr Except they make pharmaceuticals legal, GMO crops, toxic chemicals in our drinking water, shampoo, dish and laundry soap.. Pretty sure they're trying to weed out and shrink the population by poisoning us. They just keep us distracted with making insignificant things illegal and using fear tatics to keep us on their selected path. And as stated above, they recommend mammograms which actually INCREASE your chance of cancer.

Not sure who "they" are but they tend to make risk/benefit assessments based on the data that exists. Eg, the risks to the women by not catching an early cancer vs the possible increased risk of actually stimulating or causing cancer with a test used.

Data continues to come out, and "they" make their recommendations based on what seems the prudent risk/benefit in each case of value of the test to risk to the person, and so forth.

That does not = they are always correct, nor does it mean less than noble motivations can play a part, but you're comments are going into tin foil hat territory.

i don't think they'll make it illegal, considering it doesn't CAUSE breast cancer..i do agree about GMOs though, that shit is terrible. i guess that further cements my decision to wait to get a boob job :/

My response was really general just in reply to the statement that the government is gonna make everything bad for us illegal. In actuality if you research just a little, you'll discover that that "risk/benefit" assessment is often botched or paid off. Not trying to share my tin foil hat, but just based on the chemicals in our daily household items that the government deemed safe I was saying I don't think they really have that much interest in our well being.

for what it's worth, with medical studies, just like gov't statistics, it's really necessary to look 'under the hood' for details ...

(snip)"For survival following breast cancer diagnosis, the meta-analysis included just five studies.

Along with concerns from the relatively small number of studies, three of the five provided hazard ratios not adjusted for age at diagnosis or period of diagnosis and none were adjusted for other potential confounders, which may have lead to underestimation of the association.

Other problems were overall mortality rather than breast cancer-specific mortality reporting in one study and limited follow-up time."(snip)

(snip)"They urged caution in interpreting the results and called for further study, pointing to lack of adjustment for potential confounders in some of the studies included in the meta-analysis.

But, although most studies do not demonstrate an association between implants and breast cancer, a link is plausible, the group explained.

"Concern remains," they wrote, "that implants may impair the ability to identify breast cancer at an early stage by mammography because cosmetic breast implants are radio-opaque, impairing the visualization of breast tissue with mammography and making detection of breast cancer at an early stage more difficult."(snip)

'Plausible' is not the equivalent of factual.

Unfolding my own GOLD foil hat ... supposedly noble motivations plus 'plausible' study data have already been repeatedly used by particular interest groups to justify the passage of restrictive laws. So the next question of course is who would benefit from potential new laws that further restrict the availability of breast implants ??? Well, plastic surgeons are just about the ONLY doctors whose specialty operates OUTSIDE the health insurance system up front, but plastic surgery patients usually fall back INSIDE the health insurance system if and when complications develop !
