Default question for anyone who's had rhinoplasty..

so i really want to get a nose job this year, im going to hold off in the breast implants til im older but a nose job is something ive always wanted and never had the money for until now. now i believe i've found a good surgeon, he does the most amazing looking breast implants i've ever seen but i need to go look at some of the work he's done with noses. that's besides the point though, the real question is ..how painful was it? and do you cough up blood and tissue/bone? a girl told me that happened to her, that sounds absolutely gruesome! she also said she had two black eyes and looked like she'd be beaten..did that happen also? i cannot take pain killers because i am on suboxone which blocks all opiates. that's kind of worrying me if its going to be super painful.
i just want the bump on the top of my nose shaved down to a nice little skip-slope shape and maybe my nostrils brought up a little bit so it doesn't turn down with age like a hook nose. my nose looks great from the front, but in profile not so much lol. i did a search and people said it didn't hurt that bad, but i can't imagine it would be pleasant

It depends how good your doctor is. I had a sarah Jessica parker nose and now I have a kim k sorta nose. It's perfect. I wish I hadn't waited30 years. I had no bruising or pain. The packing is a bitch! I'm a nose breather and you sleep uporight another bitch but I love my nose even though a bitch broke it in nov. It still looks really good. I was in more pain when that happened.

thats the type of nose job I got and I had minimal pain, but it was really uncomfortable. I ended up not taking the pain pills but taking a ton of sleeping pills for a couple of weeks so I could just sleep all day because yah that packing made it impossible to breathe! I think if you hav a bad surgeon or if you have to break your nose itll be more painful.

Mine was super easy. I didn't have packing. Just the cast and stitches. Just felt like my nose was stuffy for a couple days.

My nose job was very extreme. I had to have my nose broken, reset, bone shaved down and the tip refined and I had no bruising or pain. Just a bit of light yellow discoloring about 4 days out for a few days. My surgeon wraps your head and eyes really tight after( really uncomfortable) but he saysit helps with bruising.

I thought the worst part was when they shove the thing under the cast to get it off. just a weird feeling.

You should get your nose done by a surgeon who ONLY does facial work. Seriously. This thing is in the center of your face - do NOT compromise! You want a surgeon who has done thousands of rhinoplasties and considers rhinos to be the main focus of their business. It's fine if they also do face lifts and other similar work, but I'd get someone who is obsessed with faces. And, obviously, make sure they're board certified in facial surgery.

Sure, if you get yours done by someone who also does BAs, you might end up with a good nose (it happens often). But this isn't something you want to risk.

^ Do you have a nose job? Most plastic surgeons have a specialty but a good surgeon does everything. My doctor has 30 years experience he was known for face lifts and boobs. His book looked the best across the board for every single procedure out of 15 surgeons I had consults with. I also paid 5000 14 years ago. I've seen lots of nose jobs over the last 17 years and the ones that went to the cheap doctors or doctors who had like 10 years experience( but were popular) in the bay area looked the worst. Just go to someone with years of experience who's book you like and more importantly who's board certified and most important, someone you feel comfortable with!

Yes, I got my nose done last year. Open rhino - broke the bone, etc.

If you're in the discovery stage, I'd say to look for someone who's board certified in FACIAL plastic surgery (if they're board certified in others as well, that's cool), who makes you feel comfortable (though I have to say, my surgeon was super fucking awkward, but listened to me and did a fantastic job), AND IDEALLY who focuses on facial surgery as the majority of their business.

You've heard the saying...jack of all trades, master of none.

As I said before, it's possible to find someone who's a genius at everything. That said, I'm not a betting kind of gal, and it majorly reassured me to know that my surgeon focused solely on faces. The face is just such a uniquely difficult part of the body - unless the surgeon is giving out cookie-cutter noses, it helps to have years of experience working on just the face. I did not want a standard slope-nose; I wanted something that still looked like me, just like a better version of myself. So I looked for someone who was completely obsessed with noses and did little else. It's just another qualifier that will help you find a fantastic surgeon who is passionate about their work.

Also remember that more expensive does NOT equal better.

I definitely agree more expensive does not always equal better as with these surgeons who get popular on certain websites and have bad revises removed but imo do average to below average work 15,000 for breast aug ridiculous!

Another big thing to remember is that you're looking for a SURGEON, not a SALESPERSON. So if you sit down with the surgeon, and the surgeon is super funny, good-looking, and charming...do not let that skew your decision.

Lots of surgeons (who, remember, possess some freaky quality that lets them bust open human faces without blinking an eye) are awkward, quiet, and not very interested in the human side of people. If you get an awkward surgeon, make note of it, but don't let it make the decision for you entirely. Remember, you want a surgeon who knows exactly what he's doing (ask him to describe in detail what techniques he will use to achieve the look you want) and who listens to what you want and adjusts his approach as needed. I went into the consultation knowing only that I didn't want a cookie-cutter nose, and that I didn't want a drastic change - I wanted to look like myself still, just improved. And I worked with him until we came up with photoshop morphs that made BOTH of us happy (you want a surgeon who will both listen to what you want and provide his own opinion).

Also keep in mind that most surgeons are busy, so push them to give you enough time if you don't feel you've had enough. Surgeons have consultations all of the fucking time with people who are flaky and don't end up getting surgeries from them, so don't be surprised if they don't put 100% of their energy into the first consultation, and if your surgeon has a consultation deposit, don't be surprised (the money should go towards your surgery if you end up choosing them). The good ones expend a lot of energy during the surgeries themselves, so don't be surprised if your surgeon seems tired during your first consultation. They may have gotten out of surgery minutes before meeting with you. Just make sure that both of you are very clear about what you want - if he's using facial morphing technology (mine did), push your surgeon until it looks like exactly what you want. And then clarify that this result is achievable for them during ONE surgery.

BEWARE of a surgeon who says "your nose will be perfect," or "yes, I guarantee you'll get this result." You want confidence, not unrealistic cockiness.

Right before my surgery, my doctor sat down with me to go over the morphed picture one last time, and discuss exactly what I wanted and what he was planning on doing. If you feel like your surgeon isn't communicating enough, or is just giving you "it'll be fine" vibes without hearing you, run! Take a partner or friend with you to support you if you feel like you need to get out of it even moments before surgery starts. Go with your gut.

Last thing...many surgeries require tweaks afterwards. This will be a "primary rhinoplasty" for you, which means you've never had your nose done before. Getting it done correctly the first time is crucial, since additional surgeries come with additional risk (surgeons don't know what other surgeons did to get the result, so complications are much more common). And you may have some tricky stuff come up post surgery: maybe your swelling isn't going down at the rate it should, or you need to get some of the bone shaved down to achieve that perfect look (that's an outpatient procedure). At this stage, it's CRUCIAL you're with a doctor who cares about his work and won't nickel-and-dime you to achieve your goal. I've read about surgeons who basically forget you entirely the second you're rolled out of the surgical suite. Surgeons aren't perfect, and your body isn't perfect either: so don't freak out if you need some help afterwards. No one can predict how your unique body will react to surgery. And it can take a full *year* to see the true results of the surgery, so you must give it time.

wow, thanks charlie..good things to consider! considering they charge 150 for the first consultation around here im going to be careful who i even look up at this point. the guy im thinking of going to specializes in aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery, and lectures about facial surgery. are those enough qualifications you think, or should i go for somebody else who ONLY does faces? im just considering him because he's the only one who has gotten good reviews from people i know..all the other ones have had mixed reviews, and even the girls boob jobs looked botched

ok..the girls at work were scaring the crap outta me last night, saying how they stick a prong up your nose and then slam it with a mallet and break it, and peel the skin back, and yeah..i kind of felt sick just thinking about it. im a pussy . they also said it would take a month at least to heal, whereas i heard 7-10 days!

Yeah, all surgery is gross. Don't think about it - you'll be under anesthesia for that part. Getting surgery is literally like falling asleep and waking up an instant later - you'll be asking if anything even happened, because you won't even have a memory of being "out," much less of the surgery itself. Do NOT watch any videos of surgeries before your surgery. There is literally no point. Educate yourself via reading. You don't need to be able to perform the operation; you just need to be informed enough to know how to find a good surgeon who knows what he's talking about.

You should get the cast off in about a week, and depending on how quickly your bruising goes away (which depends on how your body reacts to the surgery, the skill of the surgeon, and also what you had done during the surgery), I'd say 10 days is a healthy estimate. You'll at least be able to use coverup on the bruises if you need to work.

As for the healing of the nose, again, that depends on what you got done. If the bone was broken, then it'll take months to fully heal (which means you need to be very careful when stripping or otherwise active). It won't feel broken to you - there will be no pain or anything unless you bump it. But you'll definitely need to be careful. And then swelling, of course, can take anywhere from just a few months to an entire year to disappear completely. That said, the swelling should be mostly internal for that time period; your nose will look great within a month if your surgeon did a good job.

ugh this thread makes me want to get a nose job so bad...but I agree with the above posters, go to someone who has done thousands of rhinoplasties and even better someone who has done many revisions. That way he will have the experience to know what works and what doesn't especially over the long run. My surgeon did an excellent job on my breasts, but I won't go to him for a rhino because even though he does a nice nose job I'd rather find someone whose main focus/expertise is the nose which is the most difficult surgical procedure to get right.

Oh and make sure not to go too tiny. You want to maintain the structural support so you minimize the risk of a collapse/breathing issues. Rhinos also get smaller over time so if you start out too small it may end up a wee bit too small in several years. Example Farah Fawcett or Michelle Pfieffer.

Dr. Anil Shah (works out of Chicago). I suppose I should give some details...

The positives: I paid just over $5k for my open rhinoplasty where I also had the bone broken (a relatively cheap price tag). Afterwards, I had some issues with swelling and came in a couple more times for him to look at it and give me Kenalog injections to bring down the swelling. And I came in a third time to get a Juvederm injection to help bring down the swelling further over time. My body/skin is extremely sensitive, so I wasn't surprised at all that my swelling was very aggressive. Each time I came in, Dr. Shah spent time evaluating my nose's progress before deciding to inject. He also took my commute into account when deciding whether to inject or not. He was great about using Skype between appointments to evaluate whether or not I needed to come in for each appointment. And aside from what I paid upfront for the surgery, I was never charged for anything - not even the Juvederm injections, which are super expensive! Since I only needed a couple of drops of Juvederm (which, again, he was using as a technique to bring down swelling evenly), he offered to use the rest of the syringe elsewhere on my face (I declined). And at no point did he make me feel guilty for wanting a "perfect" result - he is very clearly an insane perfectionist, and he wouldn't have had it any other way. He pointed out the uneven swelling before I even opened my mouth. Shah is truly obsessed with noses (double board certified, and noses are pretty much all he does), and he sculpts in his free time, so he understands the importance of how light hits the nose after it has been altered. He prides himself on giving people improved noses that don't look "done," but will also give more stylized results if that's what you're looking for. The staff in the surgical suite were fantastic people.

As a side note, if you can, I'd recommend scheduling your surgery for a Monday. Rested surgeons are better surgeons. Again, just another thing you can do to improve your chances of getting a great result. Mine was on a Monday, and it was yet another thing that made me feel more comfortable as I was prepping for surgery.

Gripes about Shah: Aside from the day of the surgery, he was obnoxiously late to every single one of my appointments (an hour at least, sometimes two+ hours). I was driving down from Wisconsin and also had a corporate day job, so I'd have to take a half/full day off each time just for a 15-minute appointment. With Chicago traffic, and the fact that his office is on the Magnificent Mile, the drive could easily take me three hours. So on top of his lateness, I'd end up spending the whole day running around just for a quick visit. Also, you have to pay a significant amount of money for parking each time ($25+), and his office does not give out parking vouchers even when Shah's lateness is the reason you have to pay so much for parking. He's also extremely awkward in person (though professional), and doesn't really apologize for his lateness. The only time I saw him animated was on the day of my surgery - he looked really excited (that's what he enjoys most about working). During my one consultation, he seemed quite bored and tired - he even yawned at one point (I asked about it, and he had just gotten out of surgery). The location of his facilities, while they might seem convenient for people traveling internationally, is pretty horrendous. Not only is it downtown, but it's in probably the busiest building in Chicago. I mean, to get to his office, you have to take an elevator up through a mall. So on the day of your surgery, you're wheeled past Macy's and down into a parking garage wearing a bloody cast on your face and no makeup. And seriously, driving & parking downtown is a pain in the fucking neck. Shah mentioned that he's looking into building a satellite facility soon that isn't downtown, where he'll work a couple of days a week or something. I was like "YES. Do that." Lastly, I should mention that Shah's own nose is somewhat odd-looking...so don't be surprised by that. Ironic, right?

I certainly have no regrets using Shah since Wisconsin isn't exactly full of great facial surgeons. The commute was worth it to me to know I was in such good hands (literally). That said, it sucked having to deal with both downtown Chicago and his obscene, consistent lateness. I remember thinking to myself "If I were a celebrity, would I be waiting this long to see him?" And I actually think the answer might be "yes" - he's so busy that he doesn't have time to care (which is ridiculous, of course: if he's always late, he should know by now to not overbook). I was also almost so put-off by his lack of personal skills that I nearly didn't book him. He almost reminds me of someone who's a savant - even sort of Asperger's-y.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Thanks for sharing Charlie--yes I've heard about Shah, he has several happy patients on RealSelf and he can do a pretty nose without over dissecting it. His bedside manner must be inconsistent because I've heard all kinds of things about it. Glad you were able to get through all the discomfort and annoyances and ended up with the nose you wanted. My nose is definitely not getting any prettier lol so I'm feeling the itch to get it done.

Yes! I had read great things about his bedside manner; that's part of why I was floored by his awkwardness. I'm very sensitive to the vibes people give off, so feeling comfortable with my surgeon was super important to me. He certainly doesn't give off bad vibes; he just gives off "I care about your nose and nothing else" vibes. I saw him somewhere like 5-6 separate times and got the same impression each time. Even when he makes small talk, there isn't really a connection. It's like he recognizes that to interact with people, he must speak with ze people...like he's completing an assignment. Haha. During my consultation, he basically walked in and started talking measurements of my nose without making any small talk. Jarring! It's almost endearing once you get used to it. But obviously, I wasn't looking for a new best friend; I was looking for an incredible surgeon. So when it came down to a decision, even though he'd 'failed' the 'interview,' he still got the job!

Seriously, I encourage you to go ahead and get your nose done if it's something you've wanted for a long time. I'm 24 now and I've wanted my nose done since I was like 14. I got it done when I was ready to do it. One day, I turned to my partner and said, "I think I want to get my nose done," and three months later, it was done. I felt that my nose wouldn't age well on my face (I don't want to end up looking exactly like my mom), and I've always felt that my nose was in the way of me being "gorgeous" instead of just "very pretty," if that makes sense. The change is subtle enough that people who know me didn't know I'd gotten anything done, but I absolutely believe it has given me that extra "oomph." People have made comments like "wow, you look especially pretty these days" and the old "did you do something different with your hair?" When I look at photos, I no longer cringe. Sure, rhinos are expensive and are a hassle to get done, but afterwards, they are SO worth it. I think about my new nose every time I look in the mirror, and I no longer have a "pretty side" and a "bad side."

Part of it being "worth it," of course, is finding a fantastic surgeon. So whether you pay $5k or $10k, do NOT fuck around with finding someone who will give you great results. The week after my surgery, spending 12 hours a day laying in bed, I was scared to death that I had ruined my face...and all that was keeping me sane was knowing that I got it done by a well-known doctor who's board certified in facial surgery and blah blah blah. Peace of mind is everything leading up to your surgery!

LOL yes I can totally relate because my nose isn't aging well and I'm morphing into my mom hahaha. But yes a tweak that transforms you into a better version of yourself is ideal--much like some of the best, subtle transformations in Hollywood that without a trained eye you wouldn't know is a rhino--Megan Fox, Eva Mendes, Scarlet Jo, Angelina Jolie, Winona Ryder, Natalie Portman, Kristen Stewart the list is endless. I hope to have it done next year--the surgeon who is closer to me and who I've been researching is a little pricey so..it'll take a little time to save.

i just contacted a doctor in boston who specializes in rhinoplasty..his gallery looked very good, most of them were were pics of the problems i want to fix on my own nose..i googled him, but he seemed to be the best of the ones i looked at. the thing is my nose looks great from the front, its not even that bad from the side..i just want a little ski-slope i think it makes the face look SO much more youthful and i've always felt my features were too sharp.
