    Default Character and Fitness/Employment Checks

Hi girls. I am fast approaching my last year in law school and will have to fill out character and fitness application, which requires listing of employment history since I have reached 21. I have been dancing since my late teens. Full disclosure is required and I am not sure I want to chance it and not disclose because I am sure they will be doing a thorough background check. My club issues 1099s and I have always filed under the occupation of "hostess" when I file my taxes. I am wondering if anyone has undergone such a rigorous character and fitness application/background check and how you guys handled it, whether you disclosed or not, and the results of the disclosure/non-disclosure. I know that we must first give out consent before they can pull our tax records, but I'm not sure as to other methods they can use to obtain tthis information.

The other ways they can potentially see the club is if you used your dancer income to apply for credit (it will show up on your credit report as "employer", without the hostess designation, so that's not good), or if they pull the 1099s. I would outright anonymously ask them if they will be asking you to disclose your taxes; they'll have to give you the 4506 form and designate which years and what documents they want; if they just ask for your 1040, they won't see anything, but if they request 1099s specifically, they'll obviously find out.

This is kind of an issue with no straight answer unfortunately; my general answer is for police or lawyer jobs, disclose it. Honesty is the emphasis a lot of the time with those careers and it's easier to explain now that you were a dancer rather than have them find out that you omitted it and be like "Oh, so you're dishonest, eh?" It would be different if you had maybe danced for a couple months and left it off; then you could say you forgot about it; but seeing as you have supported yourself that way for a few years, it's best to disclose it.

I'm in a similar boat as you, trying to go to medical school in a year or two and that comes with the same sort of licensing stuff. I can only say that a lot of the state boards I've looked at and spoken to don't give a rat's ass that someone stripped before they were a doctor (key word being "before" - don't do it after you get the license - I would guess law is the same way, "moral conduct", you know?)

As far as personal experiences with background checks: Phoenix issues dancer licenses, so I've held 3 dancer licenses in 4 years. My clubs have not issued me 1099s, as they've never had to pay me out any money, and I have never listed them on any applications. I've passed whatever background check the state ran on me when I worked for their wildlife division and last week I got my fingerprint card, at the 2nd highest level of clearance (the one needed for nurses, EMTs, etc).

I think there is a LOT bigger of a deal made about this stuff than needs to be made. Just do NOT continue to dance after you graduate due to the moral conduct clauses.

Have a search through some threads in camming connection - we talk about background checks a LOT in there.

The short of it - if you have filed taxes, it will come up, but if you have always put your occupation as "hostess" it may not be a big deal....of course, given that the club name will come up, if it is an obvious strip club name, it may put some employers off. Risks of the job.
