    Thumbs down OMG Sugar Withdrawal

So I'm in the last stages of tweaking my diet to cut my tummy into a six pack. No more pernil (pork shoulder), no more delicious 7 cheese pasta, and no more SUGAR. OK one day in and I'm feeling a little crazy. I've eaten well so I'm not hungry. I swapped cookies for fruit but it's not working. I want a fucking cookie!!!! Turns out there really is such a thing as sugar withdrawal. It's 1 am and it's all I can do not to run out and get some Pepperidge Farm cookies RIGHT NOW!!! Ugh. This is gonna be a long two weeks.

I gave up added sugar for lent (I only lessened the amt of fruit). Talk about the worst thing ever. It was hell. No advice but to just tough it out. Nothing really helped-and I tried a lot of things to lessen the cravings. It takes dome serious will power. I had to gradually cut down. Cold turkey made me binge on sweets.

tough it out and drink coffee. thats what worked for me. that and learning how to use truvia to make some healthy treats once a month. if you really need a cookie than make some using honey- its still real sugar but there are healthy antioxidents (I think) in it and it will have a less severe impact on your blood sugar.

Once you cut it out-after a while you will stop craving it . It does take time, but it's worth, hang in there!

Every time you feel the sugar hunger pangs set in try to sip on a cup of tea (berry or fruity flavours can trick your taste buds), coconut water is also great (it tastes sweet, but is very hydrating and only contains natural sugars). Also, you can make your own sugar free sorbet by blending up your favourite fruits in a food processer with a little water and freezing it (banana is a great natural sweetener and gives the sorbet a thick texture). Or ice cream (you can find recipes on line, but you can always avoid adding cream and sugar without sacrificing flavour). If you aren't cutting out natural sweeteners agave nectar is popular (I've heard good and bad things about this though) and a little honey goes a long way (try to go organic though if you can).

    Good luck

Thanks y'all. I really hope the craving goes away. I woke up wanting Captain Crunch lololol! But I made a big ass salad instead!
Uh oh, OliveJardin, what's the down side of agave? It's my go-to substitute along with honey...

I'd avoid agave syrup because of the fructose content.

SuperJa had a pretty informative post about how agave is basically just as bad for you as anything else, though I don't remember well enough to explain myself. I have hypoglycemia, and from my experience, honey and agave will send me spiking and crashing just as surely as regular sugar. I'll add a liiittle bit of honey if I'm having plain Greek yogurt, but the protein helps enormously. Otherwise, my "this isn't so bad" sweet snack is dark chocolate. I get the individually wrapped squares of them and have one if I'm craving.

I've been trying for years, nothing helped. Eating stupid fruit, gummy bears, jolly ranchers as emergency fix still didn't help. The best I did was every 3 days, one snack. I'll give it a go again soon, because I want to look better and I know sugar is doing a number on my skin.

You could get sugar free pudding. I use to do this back when I worked out hard and tried to eat healthy. I put whipped crème on top which I think surprisingly doesn't have sugar?? Or maybe it's fat but I put protein powder in mine. Designer protein and it was good. On work trips I do good because I work 5 days a week but since Ive been home 10 days all I've eaten daily is boxes of cheezits and some kind of chocolate dessert. Once you start.....I usually stop 7 days before a trip and then I'm ok.

Well I just got a big bag of truvia and it's good! No spiking so far. Thanks for the tip on honey and agave, I never knew they acted just like regular sugar. :/

I got a bunch of different fruit to distract me during my down time. michelle11, what kind of protein do you recommend? I've been using EAS Soy and it has 20g protein and 19g carbs.

I was talking to a guy last night who was very supportive. He and a lot of people insist that sugar is destructive. I have to read up on it. I only cut it out for cosmetic reasons.

^ I used a brand called designer protein. I use to put it in my oatmeal and pudding. I haven't used a protein powder in a few years( I need to again my daughter loves protein shakes) because they all have sucralose in them and I cant use that.

Buy a package of individually wrapped dark chocolates and put them in your freezer. Cold chocolate -> less likely to binge, plus you have to unwrap them (better than having a whole chocolate bar in there).

I empathize with you. When I cut processed sugar out of my diet, I was eating raw honey (not processed honey) like a madwoman. It was a slow process of weaning myself off of anything that was high on the glycemic indexi.

Keep in mind that with stuff like stevia, you won't be truly weaning yourself off of sugar. Sure, you'll be consuming few sugar calories, but your craving for sugar will stay the same (which is what I wanted to get rid of when I weaned myself off of it in the first place).

It's the same reason why so many people who drink diet colas don't lose weight. Their brains think they're consuming sugar, so they still crave sugar. Plus, they use the "savings" from not consuming soda calories to eat more of other calories. It just isn't the ideal mentality.

But maybe it's a good stepping stone towards going off of processed sugar? It's your path - I'm just making suggestions based on my own experience / research.

Have you also tried dried mango pieces?

They taste like candy, very soft and sweet, but of course is just 100% mango.

^Though tasty, if anyone is trying to quit sugar for blood glucose reasons, dried fruit is one of the worst things you can eat

I'm on a pouting streak because I've cut out white flour and sugary items to help control my chronic hypoglycemia. I want to kick things constantly, then eat a cupcake. I'm sure I could pull something together with an alternative flour and truvia or stevia, but if it turns out badly, I'm going to shove my sugar-free head in the oven, a la Sylvia Plath... minus the gas appliances.

^Make sure you're still eating sugar through fruits! Apples are a great source of sugars that digest slowly. Your body needs carbs to function!

^I have to eat very little fruit right now since my blood sugar is still so out of whack (plus I'm allergic to almost all raw fruits). Apples are okay because their fiber content helps the body to digest them more slowly, but most fruits send my blood sugar spiking then crashing. If I do have fruit, I have to make sure it's with something high in protein, like Greek yogurt (mixed with natural peanut butter for apples!). I usually add some flax and hemp granola too if it's with berries or something. I've mostly been focusing on getting whole wheat products (not shy on the carbs there), protein, and low-fat dairy, and I have to eat every 2-3 hours. It's a complete pain, but it's better than passing out.

They say your body doesn't know the difference between eating high sugar fruit or a candy bar. I'm not a fruit lover but when I was trying to add it for heath benefits I gained weight.

The sugar withdrawal can be super tough. There is a pretty good chance that what you're actually battling is candida, which feeds on sugar and other processed foods. It's able to effect your thinking, which can make it super difficult to beat.

Here is a pretty good article on Candida: http://www.holistichelp.net/candida.html

I've done major battle with sugar/candida and have learned a couple of tricks.

    1) Try so substitute stuff instead of just eliminating sugar/sweets etc. For example, if I get a sweet craving, I'll make toast using a healthy bread http://www.foodforlife.com/product/b...le-grain-bread put some no salt/sugar peanut butter on it with sliced banana and then drizzle some honey.

    2) This product will keep the candida colonization to a minimum when you do go off track: http://www.ghthealth.com/products/threelac.aspx

    3) Lots of great healthy recipes and products on this site: http://www.drfuhrman.com/

    4) Some kind of steady exercise is a big help.

I've found it usually takes 3 to 7 days of no sugar/processed foods to kill the candida off, usually one or two of those days I feel absolutely insane- I think this is when they are starving to death and are throwing everything they have to try to get me to consume sugar so they don't die.

It's tough, but oh so worth it when you get to the other side. The cravings will instantly disappear and your mood will be exponentially better.

    Good luck!

The first two days were NUTS! Now I'm not resentful of the dried fruit, the 'no high fructose' juice, bittersweet chocolate, etc. I did my usual 2 hr workout and I didn't feel weak or strange. I had a slice of veggie pizza. I was afraid I'd crave carbs like crazy afterward but the next meal I craved salad! It's more work to check all these labels but so far so good. My rest has been a bit fitful but I think that's the hotel guests annoying me.
