    Default making your own outfits?

Sorry if this has been posted before, still new here so feel free to redirect.
Anyways any of you girls have much success making your own outfits? Im beginning to dabble in putting sparkly plastic rhinestones all over a bikini or two or adding ribbons and whatnot to old sets to freshen em up. Think is most outfits i like dont exactly fit my body. I have more bee stings than tits so i dont fill out dresses and tight numbers like other women do and i get that dreaded miffen top still even after breaking in a new set. I find my body is more flattered in tie bikinis because i can adjust em to my curves and bras kinda give me a little more shape and make me look a bit more comfortable. So needless to say i snak alot of cheap discount store lingerie and bikini sets and just snip glue and sew until i get something thats nice and eyecatching. I also use most of my take home pay for bills and food soooo my budget at least for now doesnt fit the expensive stuff that looks so cute.
So any of you have outfits that you made/added to? Any success/good experence?

It really depends on how talented you are. Some girls make their own stuff and it looks uber-tacky; others look great.

Would it be worth buying something and then taking it to a tailor? Tailors are weirdly inexpensive, so if you find an outfit you like and just need small adjustments, it's worth the investment to get it fitted.

Well, I'd love to..I have lots of ideas not so much talent. Sewing's hard for me. For bikinis, you really need a serger, very expensive. I am small on top, I did find a cute bra in a hot neon color @ Target.

yep i do it! they started selling these plain tube dresses for 45 bucks and i was like hellll no! took me about an hour to make but they fit perfectly at least and they were the color i wanted! its pretty easy as long as you are patient and careful itll look good, just invest in patterns good fabric, matching thread, and a sewing machine/surger. the girls who just kind of throw something together hap-hazard and half-ass it are the ones that make tacky looking clothes! i've seen that too

Yeah, I want a freakin' serger/sewer so bad! You can make cool stuff! I see a lot of poorly made expensive crap out there! You know what, I got some gorj. skirts from Goodwill, don't laugh, Limited, & Jones NY. Plus a cute bra!

If you have the basics in sewing down then it should be pretty easy. I cant ever find nice urban dance outfits that manage to fit me so I always end up making my own. I dont have a serger but all of my hems are double rolled which definately helps If you have a little pattern drafting under your belt I would say go for it, not much you could lose from it :p

There are sooo many links to patterns and tuts on pinterest, you can find out how to make pretty much anything on there.

I'm happy to see other 'crafty' girls here. I love to sew! I design and make some of my bikinis-the benefit being that I get the color I want plus cute embellishments. This can be done without a serger (as others have said) by double rolling and zig-zagging the hems with elastic inside.

I am actually a tailor by trade, fourth generation, and I love making costumes for myself at Halloween, etc. I am not a dancer yet, but I plan on making clothing for that as well as I have made it for friends and clients already. If you have a serger then it is ridiculously easy. You can serge bikinis in one piece and then just tie them on you. This works especially well for any kind of Native American or "primitive" look. Clothing looks well as long as you keep with symmetry and take proper measurements before obtaining a pattern and cutting it out. Most dancer fabrics are super stretchy/slinky so when sewing you may need to put tissue paper (toilet paper/paper towels even do the trick) under the fabric so that your machine stitches it properly. After you finish the piece, just tear the tissue paper away from the seams. This is for regular sewing machines, not sergers. Sergers pretty much kick ass on any type of fabric as long as it is not too thick like a couple of layers denim.

There are great books out there that show you how to make super simple lingerie pieces using old clothing or lingerie that you already have. If you are limited in your sewing skills then just buy a plain bra and panty set and sew, or fabric glue on, sequins, stones, etc. to jazz it up. Just be sure to use glue that is washable or dry cleanable. Don't use the cheap stuff as the "expensive" stuff isn't really that expensive in the first place.

Finding a great tailor is a godsend as well. We can take your measurements for you. Some tailors want a tip for this, others don't. I just ask for the customer to recommend me to their friends. We always remember those who tip and are friendly so we'll be more likely to do something in a hurry for you than if we don't like you. Especially, if you make it clear that you will be back to get more work done.

If you see a great piece somewhere, but the zipper is broken or something is amiss with it then a tailor can fix that for you. The only thing that might get expensive is when we have to mess with beaded areas of a garment as that requires a lot of hand sewing and a lot of our time. Most of us work by the piece so time is money.

Overall, I recommend that anyone interesting in sewing their own outfits go into their local fabric shop, check out the book section, and talk to some of the workers there. They are usually very knowledgeable and sew also.

If you have any tailoring, sewing, or costuming questions, I would be more than happy to help.

That was a great post, Lakota. Feathers are great to glue to bras too. I picked up an ugly clearance bra at Walmart last year and made it part of a peacock costume. Yes, I know the pretty peacocks are male. Don't forget to check the dollar store, the one by me always has sequins, small sparkly beads, flowers and feathers. This has inspired me to be crafty.

i think the craftiest i will get is gluing on rhinestones and stuff like that. where ebay is so cheap and teenie bopper stores like rue21 and charlotte russe sell wicked cute lacey wild bras for $10-12 a piece i don't think i'll be full-on making my own outfits. unless i'm making them in bulk and also selling them, for me it would be more expensive to make them myself than to buy them.

I make some of my own outfits...in general though the time and headache you'll spend isn't worth it unless you have a vision for something unique. If it fits you and you like it, buy it. I've studied fashion for 4 years and can pretty much make anything at this point but even for me it's a better deal to just buy outfits at the store, sewing is super time consuming. That being said, it's also really rewarding to be able to make your own outfits--and they're totally unique--a big bonus! To start I'd recommend picking up a serger in addition to your regular machine (you will have a hell of an easier time with the serger and if you want your stuff to look even close to professional and stand up to time and wear, it's a must for all the stretchy fabrics that dancewear utilizes) and some basic swimwear patterns. Just start by getting to know how to fit these patterns perfectly to your body and experiment with different embellishments to make them more individualized. From there once you're comfortable with cutting and sewing and fitting you can start getting creative with adding or changing design details--adding ruching, side ties, ruffles, cut-outs, etc. Don't expect to be able to wear the first couple things you sew--budget for that and pick appropriately cheap fabric for your first couple "practice" outfits. Mistakes in sewing are inevitable there's so many things to mess up--the only thing that decreases the prevalence of them is practice and experience so just keep trying and don't get discouraged! Feel free to pm me if you have any sewing questions, happy to help

I just wanted to add....you don't NEED a serger to make an outfit, stripperwear or otherwise, but especially with stripperwear. If you're making a bikini out of lycra or spandex the fabric won't fray like cotton. You can either 1) cut the hems/exposed edges with a rotary cutter so the exposed line is perfect 2) flip the hems and sew on the edge with a zigzag stitch or 3) cover the hem with your own bias tape. The last one is great if you want to make a bikini out of cotton or some other fabric that has no stretch or only 2 way stretch.

That said, the great thing about trying to make stripperwear is that bikinis use so little fabric that if you mess up or are just experimenting there's plenty left over to try again. You can get 2 mini dresses out of 1 yard or multiple bikinis sets out of 1 yard.

If you live in a big town there's likely a Joanns or some other chain fabric store. Joanns is good for solids and they give out coupons. A yard of spandex can cost $7 + tax then. A damn steal if you consider the price of most stripperwear! Also look around for a discount fabric store in your area. The one in my town sells lycra for $3-5/yd! But if you want prints, or something really specific spandexworld.com is really great. I'll go ahead and whore them out because that's where I buy from and they've always been great and had great quality fabric.

And I've found the best patterns to use are outfits you already have that fit you well.

That said, I've been wondering if making a DIY stripperwear youtube tutorial should happen. Or has already happened?
