Default Being A Stripper Is Hard!!!

Just thought I'd share my experience so far with you guys
I'm not someone who needs to strip to survive, but I'm SICK of my min wage job
and watching my single mom bust her ass on 10 hour overnight manual labor shifts
she recently started struggling with walking too, and has been telling me I need to give her money
I was tired of not being able to eat, and barely making it to my next paycheck

so I decided I should hustle on the side, while I'm still in school to help the myself and the whole family

but this is a lot harder than I thought it would be!
I scrapped up money to buy a gown, heels and a thong
after weeks of srict dieting and excercise
I showed up to my first choice club in NYC (ricks cabaret) completely prepared
only to have them tell me I have to be 21 ( although originally the age was 18 +, apparently rules had changed)

So I walked 30 blocks to another club, only to get lost..so I walked 30 blocks back to the train station and went home defeated

Today, despite having the WORST case of cold feet, and being terrified, I forced myself to dress up, go out and actually made it INSIDE of Flashdancers
but they said they have no space in their schedule until the end of June and to call Private Eyes instead

I called Private Eyes and of course the receptionist has no idea if they have space on their schedule either

So I walked to central park to gather my wits...feeling defeated once again

Now I'm back home, (in Jersey) with no job, blisters all over my feet and only 5 bucks left to my name after carfare

I guess I'll have to try another club next week...third times a charm right?

anyone else have a hard time just starting out?

That's very frustrating! It sounds like you would've saved yourself a world of headaches by simply calling the clubs before showing up though. I'd definitely do that next time so you don't trek all the way out to one only to find out that you're too young or they're not hiring or they only do auditions on certain days. You can do it!

NYC clubs have very high fees and are very competative. They might not be the best place to start off.Have you looked into working in NJ closer to where you live.

From what I know of the area, you would have a lot more luck working in Jersey.

Even if you need to travel down the road so you can work on the d-l, there are a bunch recent threads about jersey that you might want to look at.

Either way, it sounds like you've had a hell of a hard time getting started. Just look on the Brightside that all the exercise has to help your look!

you guys are right, but I don't drive! NJ transit is ten times slower and less reliable than nyc,
which is why I'm looking in manhattan
if only I knew how to drive...I'm taking lessons this summer..but I need money for that too

I did call all the clubs in advance! I called Rick's beforehand but the receptionist didnt seem to know what she was talking about when I asked about age, and on their official website for that location-they said you can be 18 and older...apparently they had an incident where someone underage abused their drinking policy so now they only hire 21+

It seems like the problems I have are all small things that I didn't think would come up such as age, and scheduling etc..I think I underestimated how many girls are probably trying to start dancing in nyc too and how packed these clubs are!

I started dancing in nyc when I was 18 but that was a long time ago so maybe things have changed since then? How did you look when you showed up to the clubs? Hair and makeup done, cute outfit? You said you had to walk 30 blocks? That's a mile and a half and if it was a hot day maybe you didn't look so fresh? And as for them saying they have no space that's just an excuse because clubs are always hiring. Next time go prepared with the addresses of all the nyc clubs and knock them all out on one day.

As others have said, since you are just starting you might want to try nj first. Nyc is hard with all the competition and high fees, but if you know what your doing you can make bank. Also, summers are usually slow. Try nj, I think some clubs also offer transportation. Good luck girl, keep trying!

I am about 5'9+, my measurements are 34-25-36 ( just so you get a visual)
    I have light tan skin

I did have my makeup done, lashes, nail tips and everything!

And when I showed up to flashdancers yesterday I was dressed up the the nine
with high heel sandals a tight mini skirt etc. I had men hollering at me from the second i left the train station!
it was really quite unnerving really, but I did it to look good for the club

If you're right and theyre just blowing me off I think it may be 1 of 2 things

    1. I am "yellow bone" or what you call (very pretty) pale african american, but my hair is not straight
so I always keep it elegantly styled in a bun

    or

    2. I admitted to having no experience

I wonder what it is...its discouraging to think something about me is making them turn me down!

Oh ok that explains a lot. You're black so that's a whole different story. I'm half black half Asian but I'm from the bronx and people say I "talk black." Honestly, they don't want black girls. But the black girls that do get hired make bank. First off, the bun is a no go! Flash has a rule about no ponytails and no glasses so a bun is worse! Do you have an accent? I knew a girl from gun hill road and she used to pretend like she was from Nebraska. Honestly, I wear a lace front and pretend to be Asian because I can pass. It seems like they are more willing to hire Africans than black Americans. Try to play the role that you have to. Honestly, it could have been the bun. As a black dancer you have to be twice as beautiful and twice as classy to be hired.

Try again, this time no bun. Make up a story, say you're from a different place. You sound very pretty so I'm sure you will get hired, you just need to know how to play the game.

    well that fucking sucks! lol
I had no idea, I thought Manhattan clubs sported diversity so I didn't think my hair would be a problem...its not like i showed up with an afro! lol
But it sounds as though I am not pulling off a superficial enough persona

I was thinking of relaxing my hair anyway, because like you I can also pass for asian (if it weren't for my hair)

Do you think its better to get a wig or just have my hair relaxed? I would feel so awkward walking around with a huge fake hairpiece on! ( I would be scared of it falling off, or people being able to tell its not mine)

I will definitely try again with straight hair then, and go for a more exotic look

Girl don't ruin your natural hair. Clubs are dark and most men, white men especially, cannot tell a wig. I personally wear a lace front and I don't even glue it, just hair pins on the side and blend your real hair. As for it falling off, it won't, it's not like you will be flying around the pole. some guys will want to try and touch your hair but just move their hands away. remember white girls wear extensions too. Most clubs seem to have a quota for black girls. But yeah like I said before, I think it was the bun. Because your measurements sound better than mine so you already have a good foundation to work with.

That's so true! its dark af the clubs, I'm going to look online for some cheap wigs, the hair pins sound like a great idea and you're right it was prob the bun lol lesson learned!

Get a nice wig for sure. The bun thing isn't going to work in most clubs. Longer is better sometimes. If you have a friend that can style the wig to make it layered, it will look less wiggy. Sew in some wig clips if need be, I've sewn wig clips into my wigs before, it isn't difficult. Wigs that are clipped on don't even budge. I promise. Just sew them a half inch behind the hair line of the wig. a couple of clips shouldn't cost more than a dollar.

This is why I don't even bother with white clubs. I couldn't deal with te blatant racism on top of everything else you have to deal with as a stripper. But then again I'm not a shuckin and jivin type of black person so I don't react well to backhanded insults like "you're pretty for a black chick"

Why don't you try black clubs? I can gurantee you won't have to o through what you just did. they might let you start asap.

I see where you're coming from with this but the way I look at it, if I'm gonna dance I want to get the most money for my time. The black clubs seem like they actually want you to dance and I sweat a lot if I'm doing all that work out and that's not a good look for a dancer. Also, I've noticed black men use more cash and have more awareness of their money. If they have money, they've probably earned it. White men on the other hand use credit cards, to me that's unlimited money. I can't tell you how many times I've had guys call their cards after they get maxed out and transfer money from different accounts just to keep rooms going. Sometimes you will even find trust fund babies who don't know the value of money.

At the end of the day, every white man wants to experience a black woman. They love our phenotype and as long as you don't act ghetto you can always sell almost every white man! Because they're not going to get with a black woman in real life but at the club it's ok. Anyway, it's almost always easier to game a white man compared to a black man.

But I do respect your ability to stick to your morals. Me on the other hand, as long as I'm not doing anything illegal, I'll get it how I got to. If that means I need to play the game, then I'll play the game.

I live in queens, and i travel 2 hours to a dive in the bronx wheream the only white girl at a club in the Bronx and I also will be beginning a job at a place in Queens tomorrow. my thoughts exactly! I decided that if I was going to be in this industry I was going to at least milk it for all its worth, which is a lot more in some places than others.

No offense but you sound green to the realities of being a black woman in a white club. First off not every white boy secretly wants a black girl. Some straight up prefer their own and will tell you very rudely to your face. Some only want you because they want cheap sex and don't see black women as deserving of high prices. Don't get me wrong a black woman can def bank at a white club but you will work 10x harder and sometimes still not do as well. Secondly the earning potential is NOT higher in white clubs. You just need to learn to adapt to the club environment. If you don't learn this you will fail as a stripper wherever you dance at. Maybe a club like Perfections isn't your thing, I'm just saying don't Set your mind on white men thinking they're any better. Maybe a mixed club is more your speed, maybe you can do dayshift and weeknights at a black club when things are alot more calm. All I'm saying is keep your options open because all money spends the same

Being what you call "yellow bone" is quite the blessing! You can pull off the most diverse array of looks - looks that I can't, because I'm just your girl-next-door, and such. Maybe start at an urban club, and once you have some experience under your belt, try some of the white clubs, and compare. It can't hurt. You're very lucky. Anyone who can only appeal to certain groups of people is somewhat limited, but you shouldn't have that problem. For instance, black men and latino men don't usually care for me too much. There's one girl like you at our club. She's really light, and she rocks a straight black weave, and it's hard to tell what race she is. She could really pass for anything, depending on who she's talking to, and EVERYONE who comes in fucking loves her. You sound like you probably look like her. Rock it, and feel blessed for it. Play with different styles of stripper-wear and characters once you start! Good luck!

I think that's a great idea. I knew a couple of girls like this and they really worked it to their advantage. Once you start stripping and have some spare cash you could get a couple of wigs in different colors and styles and try them out. Like if you think lighter hair will make you more money at one club than darker hair and vice versa. Like ToeOfTheCamel said I have tried different types of clubs and found that I usually make more money at one type since my look isn't versatile. You could potentially make money in many kinds of clubs. Heck you could even lie about your ethnicity to play up whatever look you're sporting.
