Default Have a Vitamin D Deficiency?

    Most likely you do, yes.

How common is vitamin D insufficiency?

Low vitamin D status, i.e. vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency, is far more common than previously thought.

When looking at stats, it’s important to distinguish vitamin D deficiency from insufficiency. While severe vitamin D deficiency isn’t as prevalent, vitamin D insufficiency is:

    * 36% of the US population is deficient, with vitamin D levels below 20 ng/ml [61].

    * In a study on subjects characteristic of the US white population, it was found that only 18% have a vitamin D level over 30 ng/ml [62]. Thus, a whopping 82% are insufficient in vitamin D!

Similar results were found in the 2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) [63] and in other analyses [58].

    * To make things worse, data from (NHANES) showed that the number of persons with a vitamin D level below 30 ng/mL nearly doubled between the 1994 and 2004 [63].

Bearing in mind that the desired range as recommended by vitamin D research experts, is 50-60 ng/ml, these stats are alarming and underscore the fact that vitamin D insufficiency exists in epidemic proportions in the US. This vitamin D insufficiency epidemic spans across the globe [61].

I was diagnosed with one last week. Has anyone else gone through treatment? It's hard to find a good list of symptoms for Vitamin D deficiency.

I was told that I do from my Doc. She said it was very low and I'll have to take supplements for 2,3 years for it to get to a normal level.

Diagnosed by blood test of your 25OHD levels? Treatment is simple enough (adding a D3 supplement), and covered in depth in the article linked above

2-3 years?! Complete nonsense. A loading dose to get 25OHD levels of quickly followed by a maintenance dose the trick. Follow article linked above for info there.

If it's fortified with Vitamin D, almond milk is just as adequate as cow milk. Cow milk, as I understand it, doesn't have naturally occurring vitamin D. Vitamin D is just put into a lot of dairy food to make it more nutritious. The best source of vitamin D is sun exposure. Even spending 10 minutes outside every couple days is just about sufficient to take care of your vitamin D needs.

There won't be remotely enough D in cow or almond milk to correct a D deficiency. Take a D3 supplement (per article...) retest 25OHD levels to see what dose gets you to where you need, and adjust as needed. I need 5000IU per day to get me just to the mid level of the 25OHD test.

My dermatologist needed 10,000IU to get him where he needed to be.

That's a good choice. He lost all credibility with the medical/science community a long time ago and so not a source for unbiased accurate information.

My doctor said that I was vitamin d insufficient, not deficiant. I have to take 4 prescription supplements, one pill once a week for a month, to be normal again.

He told me that wearing sunscreen on my face is okay, but I should get at least an hour per week in direct sunlight (less than 10 minutes a day), unprotected, to at least one body part. For instance, wearing sunscreen only on my upper body while wearing shorts or leaving my stomach unprotected while in a bikini.

This is a great post OP, especially since there are a lot of users who might not get enough sunlight from working in clubs or from working at home.

I went back to her recently, she said in all her years of medicine she's never had a patient who's levels were unmeasurable. She called me her personal medical marvel- I feel special. I knew it was bad, but I had no idea it was that bad.

So know I take prescription Vit D, once a week. I'm making a point to go outside in the sun as much as I can tolerate.

^ Have you considered having your TSH levels checked?

Vitamin D deficiency kinda goes hand in hand with alot of autoimmune disorders. For example, I have Hashimoto's Hypothyroidism, and notable vitamin d deficiency kinda piggybacks on top of it.

So for your vitamin d levels to be *that* low, I wonder if something else might also be going on?

When I went off birth control, my hormones went nuts and I developed a major Vit D deficiency. Estrogen plays a major role in calcium absorption (as does Vit D). When one thing gets screwy, it can have a cascade effect. I just take a regular multivitamin now and I'm good. My hormones have also settled down. But according to my doc, Vit D deficiencies are relatively common after going off the pill.
