Aren't we independent contractors? I had encountered a few managers telling me "we are not hiring". I didn't realized dancers were hired and employed by clubs. What's the deal with this?

In my experience it's usually if a club didn't like my look. I've also seen clubs hire girls that had a look they wanted and not hire girls because they didn't have the look in the very same night. I think there were only one or two occasions where a club didn't hire me because it was already overrun with girls.

yeah its usually when you are not the right fit, they have too many girls already ( although a lot of clubs won't care, and will only want even more house fees from more girls!) . a lot of clubs do have you on the books, and you are not technicallly an independent contractor..but the house fees you pay is a lot more than what they pay lol. my experience is like sansonnet, they usually just don't like your look
I guess it could had been the look. I went to a neighborhood club that has a slight hip hop vibe to it, while my look wasn't like that. I tried the other three clubs; one I already worked at but one of the managers don't want me around again, the other is kinda weird because you file an application regardless if the manager saw you or not and wait to be called, and the last one I was told to come back on Monday.

They don't like your look. No matter how many girls are working in a club if a supermodel walks in she'll be hired.
Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

yup most of the time its this. the other times its when you came in during an hr that they didnt hire-I can't believe how many idiots didnt have the decency to say "come back tues between 7-9" or whatever. always call ahead and ask when to come in, if you come in during the appropriate time and they don't hire then change your look.
Being an independent contract has nothing to do with being able to waltz in and work anywhere... It's like hair dressers. Some are independent contractors, but they can't just waltz into any old hair salon and start doing people's hair. They have to get hired by that salon and get permission to work in that place of business. Same thing as with stripping. Being hired by someone doesn't necessarily mean being their employee.

It is possible to hear that during an audition, especially in a big city like NYC. There really are a lot of new women trying to enter the industry nowadays, and the clubs often do not want to accept a lot of new people if the club is slow. One of the reasons is due to avoiding making things more difficult for girls who work there presently. Best thing to do is to come back again at another time.
Call ahead and ask what days and times they allow auditions. If they're truly not hiring, they'll give you that line over the phone. Otherwise, yeah, it's probably your look. Or the manager just doesn't like your style or what-have-you. I got fired once and told it was because they were downsizing. Bullshit. I know it's cuz that manager thought I was a lazy bitch just because when I take breaks, I don't step outside to smoke where no one can see me... Despite the fact that the night he fired me, a lot of girls were sitting in the DR eating in their street clothes and complaining how slow it was, and I was still selling plenty of dances... I mean, really, if they were firing people due to downsizing, they wouldn't pick the girl who was selling dance after dance. That dude just didn't like me.
Alright, side-tracked lol Point being, it could be several reasons having to do with that individual manager or their club standards. Try going at the times they specify they're hiring or when a different manager is working. If that doesn't work, try somewhere else where your look more closely matches the club.
Don't try to win over the haters. You are not the Jerk Whisperer.
Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
I am going to try again this week. I'm gonna try different looks to see if that would work, or if they aren't really hiring. Thanks everyone!!

Those clubs that limit the amount of dancers are special and look out for the interest of their dancers. I've been to places that don't care how many they hire because they will make money off of the house fees. They just don't give a damn.

Shake your ass and preserve your heritage.
Bang those fucking drums.
Do it for the present and future generations.
Have fun and stick it to the man at the same time. (bad-dominicana)

I was going to say EXACTLY this!!! Bit of a threadjack, but it is a major pet peeve of mine when dancers assume that "independent contractor" means "can do absolutely anything we want"....so many silly lawsuits!!! Like you pointed out, there are a LOT of industries where people are independent contractors, but who are bought by all sorts of rules - shifts, hours, appearance, etc etc. Independent contractor essentially means that you are not under contract to an employer - you pay and file your own taxes and are not under contractual obligation to them. Rules and limitations are vary from place to place.
I take cash, debit or credit. I just don't take shit.
