Default "No-Pooing" aka not using shampoo

Background: My hair is naturally straight, medium length, dry at the ends, with a very itchy scalp. I also have sensitive skin.

I have tried pretty much everything. Washing my hair every other day, every few days, every week, every 2 weeks. Using harsh shampoo, expensive shampoo, the most natural hippy shampoo, baking soda. I have tried a combination of all of these things.

I had finally had enough and decided to try the no shampooing route.

What I do now is I rinse my hair in the shower everyday with water and massage my scalp, just like there was shampoo. After this I usually air dry but I sometimes blow dry.

I use a boar bristle brush and I wash it after every 1-2 uses. The boar bristle brush distributes the oil evenly and also removes any dandruff, etc. it almost cleans your hair in a way.

My hair looked a little oily in the beginning but now I think it has almost fully gotten used to not shampooing so my oil production has slowed down. My scalp is barely itchy anymore when I used to scratch so much I bled and had white flakes on my shirts. My ends don't look dry anymore and my entire hair in general looks soooo much shinier and healthier. I used to put a little olive oil or macadamia oil at the ends but now I don't even need to so I literally use nothing on it.

Not using shampoo anymore was literally the best thing I ever did for it. I would hope that other people that have had similar issues as me or just maybe just want to stop using so many chemicals might give it a chance.

If you try it give it atleast a few weeks for your hair to adjust as it may feel a little more oily in the beginning, you can use dry shampoo if it bothers you or even talcum powder.

I am NEVER using shampoo ever again!

Does anyone else "no-poo"? Let me know!

Also: In case anyone was wondering my hair doesn't smell at all. It smells like nothing. I have had multiple people smell it for me to that I know would be honest and tell me. It doesn't smell because it is clean. Just wanted to mention that.

I wash my hair once a month. It always seems to make things worse when I do. In between I use "Mixed Chicks leave in conditioner" and rinse it daily , then re apply the conditioner. It is the only thing that will let my hair grow.

I've tried to cut down on shampoo usage, but my hair is just so oily. It looks disgusting after two days. I've tried a few different types of dry shampoo, but my hair still appears oily at the roots.

I've been wondering if I should just push through the horror of the early super oily stage in weaning off shampoo, as I did something similar with my face. My face used to get extremely oily, and I over-washed it in response. It created a bad cycle. I eventually broke it with OCM, a good light cleanser, and a moisturizer. I'd like to be able to rarely/never shampoo since I color my hair, but it just seems completely out of the question right now...

Yes I would definitely try it! It really does take longer than a few days for your hair to stop overproducing oil. I'm sure everyone is different but for me it got better after maybe 2-3 weeks and really started looking "normal" again after 3-4 weeks. So if you can push through that initial stage I think you'll be set! Maybe when you're taking some time off of work so you won't feel self conscious if that's an issue. I would suggest trying a powdered dry shampoo at the roots (even baby powder) those have always worked better for me than the sprays.

I just posted about this in another thread... my hair gets greasy around day 3 and my bangs by the next day. So being a lazy fuck I wash my bangs when needed and then I use Schwarzkopf for 2-4 days once it gets greasy. Schwarzkopf is just compressed cornstarch in a bottle. You can also use baby powder or baking soda. I found baby powder didn't work as well as cornstarch & the smell got to me eventually after using it frequently. Baking soda is good if you are stuck, but it's more gritty and it sucks if you sprinkle it and it gets in your eye area.

I am almost shampoo free. I use it when I dye my hair, or after a coconut oil deep treatment.Aside from those occasions I am shampoo free, just water. My hair is similar to how you describe yours-but very fine too.

Did this once for six weeks. If I was to do it again, I would have conditioned the last few inches of my hair because I ended up having to chop 3-4 inches off it was so dry and rough. I rarely shampoo now. Most of the time I just use a good deep conditioner. I might shampoo my hair once or twice in a week, and other times maybe just shampoo it once or twice in a month if that-- just depends really more on what products I get (I get some for free) and therefore want to try and play with, not because I feel my hair needs it.

Having one or two boar bristle brushes (washing them by rubbing the bristles against each other with soap was the best way for washing them for me) was great when I did that.

I also think incorporating oil/oil mixtures are necessary for healthy hair. Since you said you have itchy scalp, do you use any essential oils and coconut oil?

My daughter and I don't use pooh on our hair. We both have weird dry, curly, and in her case super long hair, and IME pooh just dries it out. We both wash our hair about twice a week.

I've noticed that my hair has miraculously grown considerably longer since I stopped poohing-yay!

I used to use olive oil on my scalp and leave it on overnight then rinse in the morning, but since I've stopped using shampoo my scalp is barely ever itchy anymore so I don't need to. I haven't tried coconut oil so maybe if I do it again sometime in the future I will!

I used to do the baking soda/water routine on my hair , but I started using shampoo when I had some of my hair bleached. I think I am going to try just rinsing my hair and using a deep conditioner once a week. My hair is so damaged from color and straightening it so I usually only wash it once/twice a week as it is. I've thought about chopping it all off and starting fresh with it but I can't make myself do it.

How do you get the smoke smell out? I'm trying this with my clip in extensions but they still don't smell really clean.

That's so icky I wish I knew the answer! Maybe something like the cleansing conditioner that Simone says she uses? I think it would be hard to get a smell out especially something that strong without using some type of product

Before "no-pooing" I used Dr. Bronner's which is an all natural shampoo/all purpose cleanser, might be worth a try?

If they are human hair then I think it would be fine. Dr. Bronner's is pretty much as close as you can get to not shampooing your hair besides using baking soda there are no chemicals or anything like that, it's a blend of oils. A lot of girls use it to wash their expensive makeup brushes as well. There is an unscented as well as a baby version. The almond version a lot of people like because it has almond oil in it so it leaves a little bit of a protective coat over the hair so if I were to use it I would use the almond.

If you had the type that was bonded in your hair with the glue you couldn't use it since it would be bad for the bonds, but I think you should be okay with the clip ins. I tried to find info on using it with extensions but I couldn't, just regular hair. Maybe do a small test area first? Or if you have older extensions to try it out with.

I will wash with shampoo every other month or once a month if I feel like my scalp needs it. Other than that it's straight conditioner. I wish I had done this years ago. It makes me wonder about what we are using now that we won't be using later on.

How do you style your hair? Do you ever use hair sprays or heat protective spray? I can never get my hair right if I don't get all the hair spray out first.

I've wanted to do this but my hair is so oily - I don't want to leave the house or see anyone because it's such a disgusting mess after day 3.

So do you just...deal with the nasty for a month and keep applying baby powder/corn starch/flour/etc... until your hair looks normal again? I've used the dry shampoo sprays, corn starch and tried it for four days. I just got so much build up and it irritated my scalp.

But also...if you are dumping baby powder/dry shampoo on your hair - doesn't it defeat the purpose of 'no-poo' because the whole point is to keep chemicals out and away?

I'd save so much money on shampoo if I just cut it out all together...I have THICK hair. I can go through a huge bottle of shampoo in a week or so, my hair needs a lot.

Apple cider vinegar is a good clarifying rinse that eliminates buildup. It's also great for dandruff. My hair is pretty dry so I only do it when I feel like my hair is too gunky, but I've heard of people using it pretty frequently.

I think you're supposes to mix it with water first, then use the dilute in the place of shampoo...but Im far too lazy for all of that and pour it directly from the bottle onto mah head o.O

I don't use hairspray if I curl it I just use an extra hot curler or rollers and no product. My guess would be if you used a lot of product you might be better off washing it to get the product out but using something natural like baking soda or Dr. Bronner's? But only when you use product?

Ideally you wouldn't use anything, I didn't. But I know some people feel icky that is why I suggest using a powder but I agree about the build up, it would only work if you were switching to a more natural shampoo like baking soda or Dr. Bronner's or the apple cider vinegar like MyButter suggested, I think because it's hard to get that stuff out otherwise.

If you can I would really just tough it out for those first few weeks (I wore a lot of ponytails lol) because if you're going for no shampoo at all that is the best way to get your hair used to it. I don't think the powder messed with levelling out oil production because it's not like shampoo where your hair is completely stripped, but it does mess with it in the sense that you have to do something to get it out besides water... And get a boar bristle brush! That helps a lot.

^such a good point! It seems like the elimination of shampoo reduces the need to use hairspray, moose, frizz-eze, shine spray and so on. I thought it was just me, but when I go to no-poo forums and whatnot it seems like there are numerous people who have experienced this. I'm no scientist, but to me it seems like shampoo creates the need for all of the other hair care products?

^A good dry shampoo should be enough (mine smell too due to second hand DR smoke ) and dry shampoo (and a spray of perfume or deodorant-what ever you use would be fine) seems to keep them fresh enough.

After going blonde, I noticed that every time I washed my hair it became really dry . So, I stopped washing it as often and I don't use shampoo every time now-it does help . The idea of not washing my hair every 2 days grossed me out at first-but it's helped a lot. Unless you have oily hair, I think washing it less often and using shampoo less often makes it healthier and shinier (not greasy, like I thought it would).

I didn't see anyone point this out in relation to this post exactly though I think it was mentioned above:

Conditioners have surfectants in them. So you will be cleaning your hair at the same time as conditioning it, so long as you're working it into your hair (but be careful to really wash your head off because conditioner slime can block pores and create head or back bumps. I get the most horrendous shoulder zits if I'm not really careful about washing all the conditioner slime off. Even now, if I sleep without a shirt on, or don't put my hair up, my hair does wipe off some of that left over conditioner onto my shoulders and it gives me bacne.)

anyway-- you'll be fine with conditioner. I would start by shampooing your hair less rather than jumping into not doing it at all (unless you're going to be out camping or something and don't care how your hair looks.) Your scalp will adjust and then you can stretch it out further by conditioning more and spreading your shampoos out further and further. And then just play it by ear
