Default Anyone have/had their earlobe stretched? Any advice?

Is it better to do it gradually or to have a professional do a dermal punch (not really liking the sound of this)? I don't like the look of hanging earlobes personally, so I don't plan on going too big.

I like the size of the 00g or 0g, and this is the jewelry I plan to wear most of the time.

I only have 1 piercing in each ear. Should I stretch that one or a new one? Does it even matter?

I plan on having 2 holes anyway. I need to wear hoop earrings like I need to eat and drink. So one would be for the hoop and one for the plug.

I had my ears gauged. I did it by stretching them. I stretched the holes I already had. I think I got to about a 00.
    A couple things:
    - You have to keep them very clean or they will smell. They might even smell anyway.
    - I had a second hole for normal earnings, but with many long danglely earrings and hoops especially, they did not hang the same way and it didn't look right. But maybe an experienced peircer can help with the positioning to make it look better?
    - If you go as big as you say, they will likely NOT go back all the way if you ever decide to take them out. Mine didn't, I can't wear heavy earrings without then stretching out my lobes (not super noticeable, but still), and any post style earrings I wear have to have the large back.

I will say though that at 00 (maybe slightly bigger, I don't remember) I never had obviously hanging or stretched out looking lobes like some of the larger sizes can cause.

All of my friends stretched their piercings into gauges gradually. My female friend who had them couldn't get a second functional hole though. I'm not sure why. And I agree with sierra about the smell... I can often smell gauges just from hugging someone with them.

^ Yeah, my boyfriend at the time always complained about the smell, and I kept them pretty clean.

I guess it's just from dead skin cells, oil, and sweat and stuff from your body building up. You can visibly see the gunk build up if you don't wash them.
I don't really know how to describe the smell... It's definitely not a good smell. Ever had a body piercing? I think it can happen with any of them.I've noticed my septum piercing sometimes has the smell, but it's no where near as strong or as bad. I think plugs are worse because the surface area to get dirty with them is so much larger.

Sometimes I miss my gauges, there are some really pretty plugs out there. But I feel like they would really be a pain in the ass with work. The smell, plus the larger plugs fall out really easy. Plus at this point I think if I gauged them again they'd be even more permanently stretched, and I'd have to have surgery to fix them (I have a cousin who had to have this done).

DON'T dermal punch them. You will just lose lots of tissue and it's not necessary. Just gradually stretch from a healed piercing. My piercer recommends you don't go faster than 1mm per month to be safe. I've seen people recommend to wait 3 months, but personally I don't need that long and my piercer is very experienced and I dare say he's the best in my country. I always have issues healing things (my body is fun like that), but I never experience any shit like blowouts or tears or anything like that. My lobes are very healthy and thick still

Never force the plug through! If it won't stretch, leave it alone and wait a bit longer. It shouldn't hurt, just a slight burning/tingling feeling. If it hurts, you're doing it wrong. Always stretch with safe materials (steel, titanium, glass, delrin are good for this) and use water-based lube. Oh and don't use tapers. I get delrin plugs and they just pop right in. Mine's 20mm right now (apparently that's 13/16").

Sleep without your plugs, it helps circulation and keeps your lobes healthy. Obviously don't take them out if you've just stretched them, I wait approximately 2 weeks before sleeping without because otherwise I'd just have to stretch them back in the morning and you don't want to keep annoying your skin. Try not to sleep on your lobe (I don't stretch both ears at the same time so I can do this).

They only smell if you 1. don't take them out regularly to clean your ears and the jewelry, and 2. if you wear steel, titanium or glass. Organics (especially wood) are a good choice for jewelry, but you can only wear organic jewelry once your ears are healed. It's porous so a pretty bad idea, unless you'd like an infection.

It's a good idea to keep your lobes moisturised by applying something like Holey Butter Especially in winter you'll be glad to have this stuff! It's cheap and such a lifesaver.

And it's actually better to get your lobes re-pierced if you had them done with a gun, because placement is often off and you will experience issues later on.

^ That's a lot of really good advice. When I stretched my ears I definitely did not do it in the best way... I was impatient and would force tapers through. Luckily I never had any tearing, but I did get a nasty infection in one of them. It was gross and pretty painful, but fortunately everything healed up and looked fine.

I will say that I wore many different types of plugs (wood, pyrex, bone, stone, horn, acrylic) and they ALWAYS smelled. And I did regularly clean them. Maybe I'm was just unlucky or something in that department.

Thanks everyone, you have me lots to consider. The LAST thing I want is to be smelly! Especially with how close I have to sit with people at work. I can see it now- leaning in for a guy to whisper something in my ear....next thing you know he excuses himself! That is NO good.

Even if I go up to a very small size- a size just to accommodate a thicker post....(I'm loving those Tawapa and Maya Jewelry organic earrings) will scent be an issue still or is it as the hole gets much bigger?

Thank you so much! I'm almost certain it was pierced with a gun, my parents have never been in a tattoo or piercing studio ever. I will ask my Mom to be sure.

Is this smell issue something possibly constant and permanent or is it only during stretching/healing?

I used to have 00 in both ears during high school. I used a taper and slowly enlarged them. I had to take them out when I was 17 and just never put the jewelery back in. 10 years later the holes aren't a normal size, but no one notices the difference. Occasionally, after wearing earrings that are a bit too heavy, I'll wake up and have some of the ear gunk and the smell. And it's only from one ear. To me it just seems like it may be pus, but I don't know for sure.

Now I want to go buy some jewlery....

In my experience, the smell was constant, not just during stretching or due to the healing process. It was not as bad with the smaller sizes. Like I said, I do notice it occasionally with my septum piercing (which I've had for 8 or 9 years) but not very often and it's only a very faint smell (and it's sitting right in my nose). I think it's just because when you get to the larger sizes, there is so much surface area to collect gunk and bacteria that it makes the smell worse.

My ears now actually will have the smell sometimes, if I pinch the holes with my fingers and then smell my fingers. But it's nothing anyone could smell just by being near me, even up close. I also don't wash them besides giving my ears a basic once over in the shower. I hardly ever wear jewelry in them anymore so I don't really think about it. I've had my gauges out for about 6 years now, I think.

They may indeed always smell if you're unlucky, unfortunately. I heard the smell could possibly be worse when stretching too fast, but I haven't experienced this myself so I can't say for sure if this is true or not. I haven't noticed it getting worse, but I didn't use Holey Butter in the beginning, just jojoba oil and for me the Holey Butter definitely helps with the smell, so it actually got better. I also stay away from materials that I know will make it worse.

You'll quickly see for yourself what materials are better suited for you. Like I said, glass is safe to wear in a fresh piercing or stretch, but when I wore it the smell seemed to get worse and if I didn't take them out on time, my ears would be very irritated from the buildup of gunk :/ totally gross ugh. Since I switched to delrin jewelry I haven't had this problem. I don't know how many shops offer this jewelry in your area, but my piercer makes those plugs himself so they're actually quite cheap! Give it a try if you can

IME, earlobe stretching tends to bring opinions out of people like pretty much no other piercing does. It seems that the only people who think earlobe stretching is attractive are those who have it done. Everyone else is violently opposed to them and tends to find them repulsive. Even open-minded people who generally like piercings aren't shy about expressing their negative opinions of them.

I don't know how much that will factor into your decision. I do know how frustrating it is to work in an industry where other peoples' opinions of your body actually matter, so I hope my post doesn't offend you. I know I personally can't wait until my body truly belongs to me again!

Funny you should mention that. I agree with everything you have written. My boss even told me back when I started that I should change my curly hair because white men like straight or wavy hair. (eyeroll)

I too am tired of customers especially tossing off their unwarranted comments instead of keeping them to themselves. One guy told me not to get anymore tattoos because they make me look cheap and ghetto. I reminded him that as a white man, tossing around that word to a black women is never a good idea, and I couldn't be ghetto if I tried. I wanted to toss his ass a real insult but my built-in 'relax relate release' mechanism just wouldn't allow it.

I've been dying my hair, getting pierced (2 down, 6 more to go) and pretty much doing as I please. Fuck the public- I get to do what I want again. I'm almost done with dancing, I can give 'em the middle finger while flipping my colored hair on the last day.

I have noticed that many people I know don't like to see ear gauges at all. I don't even know anyone personally who has had it done, so I came on here for advice. I'm just going to do, and they'll have to deal with it. As long as I can keep the smell issue controlled, I'm golden.

This is my second time stretching them and I'm currently at a size 4. I have beautiful solid quartz plugs in that I clean every day. I got some advice from a guy (funnily enough) that coochie spray helps with the smell. It totally works, and you likely have it anyways for dancing.
Stretch, don't dermal punch. I have my plugs and a vertical labret plus fire engine red hair & tattoos. Mostly, I receive nothing but compliments.

I started stretching mine in September of last year I think, and I'm at a size 2 now. I like this size and don't plan on going bigger. Luckily, I haven't had to deal with the funky smell, except the first few days of a new stretch. Great idea about letting them out to breath! I even have all my previous sizes, so if I need to stretch a bit again I can (my piercings always close up really fast). Good luck to you, Pleasure. And I agree, fuck what everybody else thinks. As long as I take mine out and wash them in the shower every day I don't have any issue with smell, personally.
Different materials also effect smell depending on what your ear is sensitive to and whether or not it's a porous material like wood or bone. [Those actually smell A LOT less!]

Concerning the future: whether or not your ears ever 'look normal' again depends on your skin elasticity and how carefully you stretched. The more damage you did... the less likely you are to wind up with normal sized holes. When I first stretched when I was 16... I stretched to 00. I took them out for less than a year and I could barely get a 16g hoop back in when I started wearing earrings. I went to 5/8ths when I was 21... took them out when I was 26 and was able to get back down to a 6g in 2-3 months.
On the other hand, there are people who only stretch to an 8g who always have sort of fucked up looking ears. It all depends.

I have a second hole that I use for dangly earrings if they're short like so: [click for picture]
Otherwise I'll wear tunnels and just clip my hoop right through the first hole. [like this] This actually looks surprisingly cute with even decent sized hoops.

Stretching is always preferable to dermal punches unless it's in a place where you just don't really have any other choice in order to achieve the look you want.
Thanks Doll! I will use the same technique to keep mine clean and the smell minimal. The second pic is exactly how I plan to wear mine- hoops through the tunnel.

You don't need any funny spray! The inside of your earlobes are just like the rest of your skin. The difference is that they're pressed tightly up against your plugs so unless you take them out in the shower, they can't get clean. I take out my plugs in the shower and wash my ears just like the rest of my skin. If they feel tight or dry, I moisturize with a little Vitamin E oil or body lotion before I put the plugs back in.

A little background ... I've had my ears stretched on and off for about 10 years. Right now I'm at 7/8". I'm in no hurry, but I think I'll go bigger. When I was dancing full time, I was at about 5/8", and I took them out for a long time. They shrunk back so they looked normal, but I could never wear normal stud earrings -- they'd fall straight through. I eventually started wearing small gauge CZ plugs that looked like fake diamond earrings, but I never once had a positive reaction from a customer who realized what they were. NOT EVEN ones who knew what stretched ears were or who had them themselves.

Currently, I work in a relatively casual industry (software), but I still don't want shocked glances all the time. I'd rather have people focus on my work. So I wear solid rose quartz plugs to work (close to my skin tone), and I'm careful to wear earrings that are domed on the front. This way, most people assume I'm wearing button earrings. Unless you work in a tattoo shop, or a COMPLETELY non-customer facing job, you will still have to deal with the fact that your appearance at work is not the same as your personal aesthetic.

Still ... it sounds like you know this is not a popular decision ... and many people will misinterpret your motives for having stretched ears. If you really love the aesthetic or have your own personal motivations, rock on. Personally, I love my earrings, and I'm glad I have them! I have a big collection of beautiful earrings I wear on the evenings and weekends. Much like my clothing I wear on evenings and weekends.

Oh. One more thing! DO NOT DERMAL PUNCH. If you want to go even relatively big (I would say 00 is relatively big), then you need the extra earlobe real estate. The less earlobe you have, the thinner your ear will be when you stretch, the less blood circulation (which you need for healing), and the longer it will take you to generate enough tissue to stretch bigger.

I have stretched mine on & off for the last few years successfully by using TEFLON tape (that plumbers use) I got mine at the 99 cent store & it works great! You simply wrap it around the barrel of each plug until your desired size just be careful as to how much you are stretching at a time bc you do not want an infection or a blow out!!! Hope this helps
