    Question 40 Volume bleach..who uses?

Well, my friend's a hairdresser, she said this is NOT good to use..I used it today, my hair's hard to dye (I touch up my roots only) I gotta admit, my scalp was starting to burn a bit, & turned red (not beet/bright but still) I rinsed it out very well, shampoo twice w/Nexxus Therappe moisturizing shampoo, conditioned (not deep though) then I put aloe on my scalp.
Anyone have ill effects from this?

That shit ate through my hair to the point that after months of careful conditioning and no heat I was toning it... and it just fell out, halfway down the strand. Plop! Thankfully, I have extremely thick hair, but I lost enough to fill my sister's ponytail. It also caused my scalp to peel like crazy, and it got so hot on my head that I became sick. I really recommend getting your roots done professionally if they're difficult, so that all-over heat can be used to help bring up your color with a 30-volume bleach. I did not listen when everyone, including girls on this forum, told me not to fuck with 40-volume bleach, and yeah, I got my hair white, but it has been a year and the damage went so far up my strands that I still have vulnerable areas around my shoulders now.

40 developer is best to use if you need a lot of lift. If you are lightening roots and not trying to lift any added color, then you don't need something as strong as 40. I use 40 on my hair, but it's strong, thick, and healthy and I've never had any problems. I change my hair color constantly so that's why I use it. I wouldn't use it on natural virgin hair, as it's unnecessary.

Do not put bleach on your scalp if you can help it. ALSO when you bleach, make sure that your hair is dirty. The natural oils will help protect your scalp. Clean, unconditioned hair when coloring... dirty, oily hair when bleaching. I'd go with 30 volume bleach. I don't like their color because it's shit, but the Manic Panic bleach kit has never done me wrong.

Alsooo! Do not leave bleach on too long. Check it after 20-30 minutes and wash it out. Tone it out if it's not the desired color, or if it's too brassy. Do not add more bleach on top of it to "help it lighten faster" that is what will make your hair "melt" off.

applying coconut oil for the win before bleaching hair. put bleach on over it. For virgin though, I'd drop to thirty or twenty and just leave on longer.
I like to tone with developer every few weeks so it makes my roots light enough that I don't mind waiting a few more weeks and then bleaching the new
roots plus old lighter roots. Though, you could tone every few weeks if you don't mind your roots being really light but not as light as the rest of your hair.

Babeeeeee be careful! I'm glad your hair is still attached lol! I would recommend you get a reconstructor to try to replace some of the proteins that may have been lost. K-Pak by Joico is one of the best and they sell it at Ulta: http://www.joico.com/products/k-pak-reconstructor/
After you use a reconstructor, your hair will immediately seem to be more dried out, just follow it up with a deep moisturizer or just your regular daily conditioner. That should help keep your hair intact!
It's been several years since I worked in a salon, but I'm pretty sure 40 volume is way too harsh for you, and was rarely used on clients, save for maybe someone with thick, very dark hair, like on Hispanic or Asian women who were lifting their hair many levels. Higher volume does not equal blonder. See what your hairdresser friend recommends, but 20 volume left on for a little bit longer should yield the same result with less damage to your hair and irritation on your scalp. Let it process till your hair is "the same color as the inside of a banana peel," rinse, and tone.
**I'm not a hairdresser myself, I just worked as a receptionist at a salon for several years, and have been bleaching my hair for a long time

Yeah, never ever ever fucking ever use 40 volume on your SCALP. That is reserved for lifting hard to lift hair from the midshaft. It's better to do it once or twice with 20 volume then once with 40.

when applying bleach to the scalp always mix a packet of Sweet N Low in with the bleach to take away the harshness that the bleach will cause on your head. It won't stop the damage to hair (if left on too long) but it will take the burning off Good Luck! I've been doing hair for a few years as a hobby so I've learned alot of strange ideas but they work!

also forgot to add ^^ get some olive oil & warm it up & apply it all over your hair & leave it on for 30-45 mins then use a damage/reconstruct shampoo & conditioner afterwards, you will be fine! If it's still not light enough to your desires, do a "bleach bath", which is mix the bleach mixture with one part shampoo & I always add a small bit of olive oil also. anyways mix all of that together & run a small amount of hot water in the bowl also and stir it to get a foamy consistincy and apply that to the areas that need to be lifted but as the above people said also i wouldn't used anything over a 30 volume for any of this!! and always start from the bottom ends & work your way up if you are planning on bleaching your entire head bc the top of your head will develop faster than the bottom will due to more heat around the scalp. Hope this helps!!!

I mixed 30 and 40 (so essentially 35) to go from black to blonde. But my hair was virgin and covered in coconut oil.

Oooh, I have to use 40 vol on my hair :/ My roots grow in nearly black, and anything less does not cut it. Any hairdresser besides my regular girl refuses to do it and I inevitably end up with orange roots... I have rust red roots right now because my friend insisted that 20 vol would work. My scalp does itch, but it's nothing major.
I'm not sure if it's the brand or something, but I have tried to do it myself at home on dyed black hair, and it utterly fried the test strand. I'm not sure what my stylist uses.

As far as maintenance on bleached hair, I use "the purple shampoo" (Paul Mitchell) and cheap Suave conditioner. They both get slathered on and left for at least 5 minutes. I also only wash my hair 3x a week. So far it has stayed really thick and healthy.

the volume of developer you use is just the amount of time itll take for the bleach or color you mix it with to work. the slower it takes, the better for your hair. its basically your choice if you want to wait 4 hours for volume 10 to work or 20 min for volume 40 with heat. you will get a much more even result with a lower volume, less scalp irritation, and preserve your hair health. volume 30 with heat almost ruined my hair, now I stick to 10-20 no heat and my hair is very healthy. my hairs a medium brown and I bleach to platinum.

^^ I think my hair is just bizarre-o, because I have to sit with the 40 for a good hour to get it to work. We rarely use heat on it though, as it does get a little dry if we do. I mean, I suppose I could achieve the same result with a 30 or 20, but I can't do my hair myself, and no hair stylist is going to let you sit in their salon for 2-3 hours waiting on it to bleach enough.

My hair isn't damaged at all though, which I will admit that I am *very* surprised about... every time I go anywhere else for a trim, they comment on how healthy it is for being bleached.

just try the bleach bath I suggested in previous posts ^^ & it'll work wonders esp since your hair isn't fried only leave in on about 45 mins though if it's 30 volume, and that'll take the rusty color right out

It's not the amount of time, it's the level of lift. I've never heard of anyone leaving bleach on their hair for 4 hours. I would not recommend leaving bleach, of any strength, or any hair color that isn't vegetable-based, on your hair for more than an hour. 10 volume is not really for lifting, it is for depositing color. -___- I wouldn't use it unless you are going from gray to blonde.

If you want to lift more than 2 levels, one should use 30 or higher volume. Sometimes you have to just bleach it, tone it, and then bleach it again at a later date to achieve your desired shade of blonde. This shouldn't be necessary for natural roots though...

Also L'oreal quick blue is pretty good, but putting coconut oil on your hair at least a hour before bleaching is very good. I use 40 Vol and my hair looks as usual. Once you bleach it, use a wella toner, and then use a blue shampoo to keep your hair nice and blonde.
