I also have Pantene in my shower right now. Just out of curiosity are you Asian too? As for the brush wide tooth comb should do it? plastic? Do I have to use those boar hair bristle ones?

But for the most part I think I got it...nothing major with the hair care.

P.S. You said if hair is oily to wash every day, should I just be using water to wash it or also shampoo? Because I am planning on shampooing/conditioning every other day.
I have to strongly recommend the salon products. It's not just about the name, it's the pH level. Pantene is known for stripping color. I know you don't color your hair but think about what kinds of chemicals strip color. Harsh ones. The pH levels at Wal-mart, Rite Aid, etc. are not governed. They could be as high as a 12, which is the same level as AMMONIA. Salon products ARE governed and will not be higher than a 7 (the level of water). Your hair's pH level is around a 4.5-6. Shampoo and Conditioner does make a difference.

Also, your hair is oily because you shampoo every day. Your scalp is being robbed of its oils and is producing more to make up for it. Give yourself a a week or so of washing every other day and it will correct itself.

Sorry to repeat myself, but I did go to Cosmetology school and I am very knowledgeable about hair. I've also worked as a Beauty Advisor selling professional products and have tried most lines.

Oh yeah the PH level...I gotta remember that. But since you speak from experience and education, I hear ya.

    Stop with the bullshit.

Here is a chart showing the pH of various shampoos, including Pantene. http://www.thenaturalhavenbloom.com/...mate-list.html (I have not verified any of the other info on the website, just the shampoo pH chart).

Who is it that you think "governs" the pH level of salon products? LoL

yah actually salons are allowed to use products not available for sale in us, so they are actually less governed. my old salon (and what most do) is use karastase and other french products in the salon and then sell the us approves version to the customers which is often dramatically different because of all of the laws.

    WRONG!

Where are you people getting these ideas? Why would you believe something so silly?

ALL retail cosmetics including shampoo legally must be labelled with a declaration of ingredients in decending order.

    http://www.fda.gov/Cosmetics/Cosmeti.../ucm126438.htm

It is "professional" salon (not sold to consumers) brands that do not require an ingredient label to be on the bottle.

    More from the FDA website:

    Adulterated or Misbranded Cosmetics
The FD&C Act prohibits the distribution of cosmetics which are adulterated or misbranded. A cosmetic is considered adulterated if it contains a substance which may make the product harmful to consumers under customary conditions of use; if it contains a filthy, putrid, or decomposed substance; if it is manufactured or held under insanitary conditions whereby it may have become contaminated with filth, or may have become harmful to consumers; or if it is not a hair dye and it contains a non-permitted color additive. Coal-tar hair dyes bearing on the label the caution statement prescribed by law and that give "patch-test" instructions are exempted from the adulteration provision even if they are irritating to the skin or are otherwise harmful to the human body. Eyelash and eyebrow dyes are not included in this exemption. All dyes used in eyelash and eyebrow dye products must be approved by the FDA for such use.

A cosmetic is misbranded if its labeling is false or misleading, if it does not bear the required labeling information, or if the container is made or filled in a deceptive manner. For additional information, see Key Legal Concepts: "Interstate Commerce," "Adulterated," and "Misbranded."

Hello! I've been trying to grow back my hair long after stupidly chopping it off, so I was asking the same questions about 18 months ago. My hair is getting to be long now.... it's fine and curly.

But anyway what helped me the most was, more than specific product advise, is just to flow with your hair. Learn its texture and true color and embrace it. The less chemicals you use on your hair, and the less you go against its given nature, the healthier it will grow. And it still needs lots of maintenance, but it's worth it!

for hairdos, a great way to achieve texture and/or volume is by braiding. You can start with your hair really short... check some youtube tutorials on how to do braids on your hair. Your hair is way more protected, you can even braid it during the day with some nice conditioner product (if dry hair or split ends are issues), and then you can let it down to dance or do yer thing, whatever. The less you let it loose, the better, really. Braiding also creates nice loose waves on most hair, so you can sleep with your hair braided with a bit of mousse and wake up with ready to style curls.

Also, another good advice I read was treatments. Deep treatments at least once a week; depending on your hair characteristics, it could be a moisturizing treatment, a nutrition or protein treatment, probably a mix of 2 and 2 in the month. you have to test it with your hair tho; protein treatments (keratin, placenta, etc), tend to make my hair brittle and wild. So I just use them once a month, and I give myself hot oil treatments at least once a week.

it doesn't need to be expensive, either... if you can afford salon products and treatments, great, if not..... I make my oil mixes myself in my electric oven, I put in a mug half full with olive oil and add some sprigs of rosemary, lemon or orange peel, the juice of a lemon, some walnuts, whatever hits my fancy, and I let it heat at about 300°F for half an hour or so. Then I fill the rest of the mug with coconut oil, maybe add some more lemon or an eggyolk, yogurt or heavy cream..... not much, you don't want to feel like a salad.... strain and wait until its as hot as you can bear with your finger (DON'T fry your hair, I did that once) and apply it all over.
(lol if you're disgusting like me and you have a bit leftover after slathering your hair, you can rub it all over your body and then give yourself and excellent salt rub). Keep it on your head for as long as you want (min 10.15 min) and then give yourself a good shampoo.

I usually go natural because I'm frugal (ahem cheap) and then I feel like I'm really gettng the best of all the ingredients. my hair is growing healthy and shiny and I am very pleased with my routine right now. I only splurge in a really good conditioner and curling cream, and it seems to be growing very strong. Hope some of this helps.

Anyways since most of you have or have had long hair, what is the proper care and maintenance needed? All my life I had short hair or a buzz so I really want to make sure my hair health/quality is top notch. I read pony tails cause the hair to break? Not to use conditioner every day? Blow dryers/heat is bad? I dont color/bleach/perm my hair so that is one less thing to worry about. I also limit my time in the sun so UV damage is kept to a minimum.

In case it matters, I have straight Asian hair with a bit of waviness at ends and I think my hair type is thick. Your input is appreciated, thanks.

This is the style I will be aiming for:
I have super long hair and I'm a cosmetologist! If you want to grow your hair faster, take 10,000mcg of Biotin daily! I recommend that to EVERYONE.
Also use Mane & Tail shampoo and conditioner. The more conditioner, the better. And make sure you keep it in your hair for at least 5 minutes.
Sometimes doing deep conditioning masks while applying heat works wonders I've done girls with dry brittle hair, from over bleaching and heat damage, turn into silky smooth manes!
Always protect your hair from heat ! Before you blow dry & before you apply a hot iron use a heat protectant, too hot of water in a shower can split open your hair cuticles, even apply UV protectant if you live in a state with a lot of sun, but that's not a huge worry, it pretty much just fades color.
Once there is damage done, it can't be reversed. But luckily there are lots of products to help take them close to normal!
The more stress on hair, such as pony tails and braiding, the more it will stretch out your hair cuticle and damage it. As long as it's not done super tight, it should be fine
Also, if you want to go above and beyond, sleeping with a silk pillow case will allow your hair to move freely versus a cotton pillow case. The hair cuticles tend to get stuck among cotton fibers.
Also, after a shower, you should do a cold rinse, apply cold water to your hair, to close the hair cuticles. It prevents splitting and adds shine. Same goes for blow drying, end your blow drying session with a cold blast
Oh, also, you shouldn't shampoo your hair everyday, it tends to dry out your hair & scalp, sometimes causing dry brittle hair breakage, and "greasy" hair. Which is actually from your scalp being so dry that it produces extra sebum(oil) to lubricate your hair. That's why extra conditioner is usually recommended.
    Hope this helped xoxo
