Default TRAVEL: Things to do in the USA

Yayyy, my holidays are a 'thinkable' time away and I am very excited to be travelling some more of the wonderful US of A.

One of my wonderful best friends is coming to visit for a month. Last year she did the same thing and we saw good ol' NY, LA, Vegas and Mexico. This time, we're doing Austin, then Toronto/Montreal/Niagara Falls then onto Miami and finally some relaxing time in Mexico.

I've been doing research on Austin and Miami as to where to stay and what highlights to definitely do. I'd love to hear some recommendations from you lovely ladies or gents if you've been or lived there before.

I believe in Austin, the best place to stay would be South Congress or 6th Avenue? And in Miami, I have absolutely no idea. Is it best to stay in Miami Beach or on in Miami? What areas would be the best? Also, how difficult is it to get around without a car?

6th street is the classic bar area in Austin, but if you want a quieter time while there, I definitely recommend going to Zilker Park. They also have some lovely museums, and the Capitol grounds are nice too. If you're coming anytime before late October, it will probably be pretty fucking hot. Parking is a bitch because UT students add to the already hectic city situation, but as everything else in Texas, Austin is a bit spread out, so I would recommend a car if you plan to venture far from your hotel. The area can also be difficult on foot in some areas because of the hills.

Oh, and don't believe the "homeless" young people everywhere. Most of them rent apartments together and go to UT on their parents' dime. They just don't want to work, so they ask people for cash instead. One went so far as to pretend to dig in the garbage for food after I refused him, despite having nice flip flops, tattoos, and a guitar strapped to his back in a newish case.
