    Default Rent going up

I love my apartment and my neighborhood. I took a lot of time to find it, and spent hours and hours doing comparisons on spreadsheets in an effort to quantify the perfect place to live.

Yesterday, I got a notice that my rent is going up more than 10% when I renew my lease in October. With parking and pet rent I already pay $1300 a month. Now it is going up another $136 a month, and there was no mention of additional services being added to sweeten the deal.

It is hard to find a place that takes medium size dogs, has covered parking and garages, and is in a nice neighborhood. I just feel like the rent is out of place for the community. Most of the comparables are in the $975 price range, but don't offer assigned parking or garages. I live on the west coast, so these prices are pretty normal here. Any of you from the mid-west or south will find these rents crazy expensive, I'm sure.

I feel tired just thinking about moving, but I also feel like my community is gouging me a bit with this increase within my first year here. I haven't asked my neighbors if they are also getting a rent increase, but will do that as soon as I run into someone. There are many retirees here, and I'm sure they aren't thrilled at the 10% increase either.

Anyway, I guess I'm just venting a little bit. Are any other areas seeing this kind of increase in rents now that real estate is turning around?

Yeah, everything's going up but the wages, which's why I live as a room mate. Usually things stay the same or get worse as well

My apartment tried to increase my rates by a little over 10% directly after someone attempted to steal my tires in the parking lot in broad daylight. There had also been a recent surge in other crimes as well. We really didn't have the money or time to move at such short notice, so we went down to the front office and contested it. They ended up meeting us halfway, so it was still raised, but not quite as much as they wanted. I suggest you make an appointment with a leasing officer and tell them that a 10% raise after your first leasing term is unacceptable, and be sure to bring up that you've always paid on time and haven't had any issues, etc.

    I hate renting -.-
