So unfair.
So unfair.

It is unfair. One day I hope we can get rights for sex workers, prosecute mistreatment of sex workers, and legalize prostitution.

If there were rights, privacy, and legalization for sexworkers, majority of women would probably become one and the market would flood. Many quality girls would begin to undercharge just to continue to make a profit, and there would be more supply than demand. The same thing already happened in the stripping world.
I don't want to shame this woman, but pulling a woe-is-me-its-not-my-fault-you-judge-me-for-being-a-sexworker is weird. She blames other people for the fact that she lost her job in a school, but really its HER fault because she knew this was a risk of being a sexworker. You know what you're getting into when you become a sexworker, unless you're delusional. The reason you make so much is not really because of the act (its just sex, which is natural), its because of the outting risk and taboo that many people do not want to risk, which is why they don't become sexworkers.
You can't have your cake and eat it too in this industry. You either take the risk (outting/judgment) and become a sexworker + accept the consequences, or you avoid becoming a sexworker because you do not want those risks.

I think there's a certain structure that can deal with flooding. We have to remember that just because we can all one day escort, doesn't mean we all will. This nation is still very religious so I think a lot of women will still be on "the down low". I mean, I look at other markets where there's a possibility of flooding but it's still very controlled. For example, alcohol, retail, education, the food industry etc. Granted, they aren't a physical service, but they are a service. These are all markets that are both legal and very popular yet, controlled to a certain extent. You have to follow regulations on all of them and there are top dogs in each market. I don't see why prostitution can't be the same way. Why not have, a license to prostitute? LOL.

I'm with GR.
I don't feel sorry for her at all. She sent an article to the Huffington Post along with her real name as the author. She escorted in college while she was studying abroad in Mexico. No one knew about it. If she never opened her mouth about it she would have never lost her job.
It doesn't make it right but she's naive to think times have changed enough to disclose that. She outed herself.
If you look at her other writing beforhand she always tries so hard to come across as intellectual and edgy and she bit off more than she can chew and is currently in pity party mode. And is still trying to milk the situation.
Am hoping more for "decriminalization," not just "legalization," of sex work. Also what's up with the hypocritical legal stature of porn vs. escorting?
Perhaps Melissa Petro thought she was in the clear, but yes, her stance comes off as defensive and kind of foolish. If she were wildly rich, famous, or powerful, she'd probably get away with it and have a book deal. It's too bad Suzy Favor Hamilton didn't own being a former escort. Speaking from her privileged position might've helped shift perspective on what we do.
That was sweeping and unfair of her to say. Sounds very ignorant, especially considering the fact that she was a teacher.
Agreed, although I can't fault her for milking the situation.

People said the same thing about stripping, but then it flooded post-recession. And now it doesn't matter how hot or talented you are, its extremely hard to make money.
Stripping became more & more accepted, and glorified in music, and then all of a sudden the recession hit and wallets closed + clubs flooded with girls. Then quality girls started doing more for less, and extras increased to the point where it became hard for many to compete with extras and undercutting.

If you've read her full story, she only escorted for four months - and it wasn't even really escorting in the truest sense. She said she mostly responded to ads that men placed in Craigslist, asking for a "non-pro". She said she'd occasionally place her own ads, screening consisted of exchanging a few emails, then she'd meet them for drinks somewhere first, before going either to her place, or theirs.
It doesn't sound like she was particularly into it as a career. This was at a time when many escorts in New York were making tons of money, before the economy really crapped out and she was only charging between $250 and $300 an hour. So she basically risked this teaching job that she supposedly loved for what amounted to basically a lark of sorts.
This is true! Why are these men allowed back into the "real world of vanilla work" but we wouldnt be?! Thats so backwards but I do agree that she shouldnt have outed herself, that was a bad idea to put her real name on the article being that this world is this way, what can we do about it? clearly nothing or something would have been done by now, we may be getting there tho

i think almost all of the different "fields" in the adult industry are pretty flooded to an extent..in fact i found camming to be much more flooded than stripping, since all you need is a computer and a decent web-cam to get started and there is more diversity than in stripping ( no such thing as an ugly girl in the camming world! there is a niche for everyone!), but i also think a lot of girls just aren't good at it. sure you can do it, but it isnt' as easy as most girls think, and most of them quit within a month when the money doesn't come rolling in like in the music videos they see lol. it takes so much to really become good at it ( patience and hard work that ppl dont think they should have to put in if they are getting naked). plus all of them have bad reprucussions if you are ever outted..plus most girls are scared shitless about their families finding out. but i also think if you are good at your work and really try and succeed and learn the ins and outs there will always be money..im not hurting for money at the moment and my club is flooded with girls, because i upped my game and stopped feeling sorry for myself haha. i think if you are good at what you do and love what you do, you will succeed. the adult industry ( escorting/exotic dancing) has been around since the beginning of time, so im not too worried about it collapsing..
although i do see your points, you CANNOT have your cake and eat it too..nothing good comes easy, and it all has a downside. i would personally rather rake in the big bucks and have ppl look down on me than be "respectable" and not earn jack. and why the hell did she out herself..what was she expecting?

She makes a good point about the hypocrisy. A guy pays a sex worker and "confesses his sin", he's forgiven much more than the sex worker. But I'm surprised she didn't anticipate the reactions she got. A lot of people wouldn't like it.... if their kid's teacher was a stripper or cam model... much less selling sex.
