Anyone ever had to have a root canal from a deep non painful cavity? Or just had a deep cavity that you got a filled instead of having to have a root canal?

Yes, I was soooo close to having/needing root canal, thank God he saved & was able to save the tooth. I gotta go to dentist next week w/cavity, ugh!
Anyway, yeah, Valium time for that one. It was a bitch! But, still better than having root canal.

Ok, it's always good to get a second opinion Good luck

I have done both. I get novocaine so neither were painful at all. I have gotten deep cavities filled and I prefer it because you don't have as many crazy things in the mouth. The downside, is sometimes the filling will look weird or discolored next to your tooth. A root canal and then crown, will almost always look perfect. It is just a longer process because you have to get the root canal, get a temp. crown, and then get the perm. crown which may need to be redone at some point in your life.

yea me either bc it doesn't hurt unless I were to chomp down on something really hard otherwise I can chew on that side without any pains. I'm a total cynic when it comes to dentists though, I feel like they're all out to just get your money & tell you your situation is the worst it can be when it's really not..... I'm still gonna get a new opinion though

Ok. I just today had a tooth filled..it wasn't a super deep cavity, but. It was in a weird spot (my cavities always are!) on the side of the tooth. It was my lower front (next to the canine tooth). Dentist said that it being on the side made it closer to the nerve so..as it gets worse, it would take less time to get to the nerve, it could be possible I'd need a root canal but she'd fill it & possibly be ok. She said it would take time to heal, being in front like that, + sensitivity to cold/hot, & if I kept having pain I still might need the root canal.
I hope this makes sense, as I'm tired, aggravated, & dealing with the week/last month from hell.
Thank you.
ETA I had a few years ago, another deep cavity..different dentist who wasn't sure if the tooth could be saved or not..he had to work on it basically to know. He was just barely able to save it, but did.

awesome! It gives me hope for my dental future LOL I think I could get away with just a filling but the exrays showed that it was getting close to the nerve but yet a year later it doesn't hurt.... maybe I'll get lucky! Good luck to you![]()

Ahh, if I were you, I'd have it taken care of ASAP..if it's getting close there's no time to waste. Sometimes, even w/Xray, the dentist can't tell until they get in there & start drilling, it still can go either way..this was the case w/me last time, I was lucky then too it was saveable. Another thing I didn't mention, I am very hyper about dental care, (which yeah I slipped somewhat to get the cavity). But I brush, floss, & use picks on my gums, multiple times daily not to mention using floride mouthwash more than once a day(this was before cavity got filled, to try to slow it down a bit) Root canals cost big $$$, not to mention the discomfort. But, it's your tooth.

well I'm going back to my home state to get my dental work done here in a couple of weeks after i work & depending on what they say I'm either gonna have it pulled (bc it's a back molar, it won't be noticeable) or just try to get a reg filling done.

Several root canals. The worst part is writing the check, the next worst part is having my mouth open for a couple of hours (it seems, I didn't actually time them).

lol same story. I think ppl like us should have our own personal parking spots at the dentistI square to squad I will marry a dentist *dreams*I never experienced pain during or after , some ppl may be different. No fun drugs either. The worse part is keeping the mouth open.

I didn't have root canals, but 6 crowns, 3 on each side upper back. I had to have Valium, & (which I needed it plus the Novacaine) but the next day I drove my car over a curb (no damage or injury TG) I am highly sensitive to any drugs including over the counter, but it was scary

why did you need crowns if no root canal??

well. b/c the teeth had to be drilled down to practically nothing so, I guess it should have something over it..however, I do have a very deep one in the very back upper, which I never went back to have the crown put on

ah. I wouldn't worry too much ,I've had on of my bottom back molar chip off from the side revealing my filling & it's been like that for years , I just try not to eat to many hard things such as candy ,etcThey told me I needed a crown on that tooth but that dentist was trying to rob me of everything anyway so I took it w/ a grain of salt & it's been fine since

I'm going to the dentist tomorrow for that. Next to the last tooth chipped down to my cavity and it didn't hurt for the first week so I let it go since I have no extra money. Now it's hurting and I think even more chipped. I think I can feel a lil piece wiggle but it could be my imagination. I think I have a cavity and google is saying I'm going to need a root canal. Must stop googling.

from what I've read & heard from other people, unless you're in utter & insane pain , you won't need a root canal on that tooth, prob just a filling to replace the broken one they might even put a crown on it after. The only time they do a root canal is when the pulp (root) is infected from the cavity itself

I have a bump on my gum and google said it's an infection that's why I said I'd need one and the dentist confirms it is infected. He said they can just do a filling for my chipped tooth and I have a few other cavities. And at some point I had trauma to my front teeth and will need root canals on them. I don't remember getting hit in the teeth and I'm sure that's something I'd remember. Unless it was a car crash that I black out in. I will now be homeless thanks to the dentist.

Ugh Im in the process of having ALOT of dental work done-so far ive had 4 fillings 3 crowns and one tooth extraction. Before this the last time i saw a dentist was when i woke up one night in EXCRUCIATING pain and went to the dentist and told me that i needed a root canal on two teeth. I got the canal and fillings, and was supposed to go back and get the crown but never did. One of the fillings fell out of one of the teeth and i just had it extracted yesterday. I would strongly advise you to go see a dentist ASAP and get it taken care of. Please dont wait until your in pain, it will hurt not only your mouth but your pockets. I want to kick myself for being so negligent to my dental health these last years.

Sorry you had to suffer through that, I feel for ya!

I went to the dentist with no tooth pain then he played with my teeth and the infected tooth now hurts. When I wake up I am calling around for the cheapest root canal and just doing the infected tooth first since that hurts now. Tuesday I get the filling in my chipped tooth and found out I have another chipped tooth. Same tooth just on the other side of the mouth. It's gonna take me like 4 years to fix all my teeth problems cause of the money it costs.

Aww, so sorry Hun! That sucks!

I called around and so far I'm just gonna go with the dentist I've been to up until I lost my insurance. Every where else was $500 more or would send me to a specialist for the infected tooth. I applied for care credit and I'm approved up to 2,500! So far the root canal is only 1,100 a lot lower than I expected.
He said I'd need root canals on my front teeth but what he wrote on the pamphlet for the specialist says external root resorption. I keep googling and can't find much info. Anyone know anything about it? I see that it's caused from trauma or impacted teeth. I don't remember trauma and I told him about my wisdom teeth being impacted and he said it's trauma that caused it. It says right after trauma to see the dentist to help prevent loss of the teeth or if it fell out to do this and that and it can be put back in. I can't really find anything that says exactly what they'd do to the teeth to save them just that they're not sure when they teeth could fall out or need to be removed. I just see that I'd need a root canal on them for if they're infected and he didn't say they are infected. He showed me on the xray that those two teeth really have no roots but the ones next to it has great roots.
I just recently had a root canal for the second time on the same tooth. Several years ago I had the root canal done and I never got the crown because I decided I could get by without a $1k crown and boy was I wrong. The uncrowned tooth lasted a couple years, but eventually it cracked while I was eating some nuts. So, I had to pay for the root canal AGAIN, and this time I wisely put up the cash for a crown afterward. They ALMOST couldn't save the tooth; it was very difficult to prevent having to have it extracted because I neglected to get that crown so long.
