    Default Favorite Bank For Checking

So I am beginning to get annoyed with the current bank I have because they keep freezing my account whenever I am out of the area.

I am tempted to go to a credit union, but I don't think it would be a good idea for me because there's likely not any ATMs, and I NEED there to be ATMs around. I have Payoneer for a couple things and I need to physically take the cash out at a random ATM, and manually deposit the cash into an ATM at my bank.

^^^ I don't know how else to get around that factor. I have thought about getting a money order, and some banks do allow money order deposits, right? How else would I get around that?

So what is your favorite bank for checking & savings accounts?

Why wouldn't a bank allow a money order deposit?

When you say they put a freeze on your account when you are out of town, do you mean when you use your debit card? Do you travel out of state alot?

Or do you mean that when you make a deposit it is held for a couple of days?

Banks will take money order deposit just like any other deposit. It is when you are purchasing money orders with cash in large dollar amounts (over $1k) that they start reporting it to the IRS.

Credit unions now have a shared branching system. A group of credit unions work together so that you have access to more ATMs without fees and even use teller window services at shared branches. It may be worth calling a local credit union to find out if that is an option. Unlike banks, if another credit union could help you more their competitors will refer you to them. But all financial institutions will hold a deposit for at least 24hrs if it is not cash.

Because if I'm out of town or the bank is an online bank, I would have to mail it and it would be risky. And a lot would not allow a money order deposit unless I was there in person.

Personally I have two sets of accounts. I have a credit union checking and savings account. I use those for savings mostly and because I have a credit card with them.

I also have a checking and savings account at USBank. They are a national bank with branches everywhere. I have my debit card with them. I use them for regular every day transactions. I make random deposits in cash and checks without any issues.

It never hurts to have more then one checking account as long as you can keep up with them.

Every bank has different types of checking accounts. The account I have with USbank only requires me to transfer a min of $10 or more into my savings account each month from my checking. If I dont have it in there at the time of transfer, it doesnt pull the amount, but sends me a notice. If it happens two months in a row then I get charged a fee. I can withdraw from the savings account twice a month.

Some employees do not know what accounts are available even. Always ask for a fee schedule. It gives a listing of all the accounts and the fees connected to them.

agree with Vamp that a combination of a very low fee very low 'scrutiny' credit union, plus a major national ( better yet international ) bank, provides for just about every possible requirement / concern.

yea that's what I was afraid of but now I'm banking with CHASE bc they're free, but when I go on the road soon I worry that I won't be able to deposit money that I make into my account due to the fact that there aren't Chase branches everywhere in the south or on the east coast :/

I would go in and asked to speak with someone who could help you. Politely let them know about your concerns and that if you continue to have a fee you will move your accounts else where.
I would shop around for a credit union as well. I know it may seem like a hassle but it will give you more options in the future too.

I just moved to Wells Fargo... they can be very fee-laden but there is usually an account that works for everybody to avoid it. Mine is technically a "college" account since I'm still at university, and I just have to make 10 debit transactions a month and have an auto transfer to savings of $25 once a month. No biggie.

I had credit union accounts but switched because they were holding transactions for a week, then re-organizing them. They'd show up as pending in the correct date order, then magically once posted they would have re-arranged largest to smallest. It struck me as very shady. Last straw was when they charged me an NSF fee when I was in the black; their NSF fee caused several very small purchases the next day to get tacked with their own NSF fees. None of that should have happened, so I told them to kiss my ass and went to Wells (who does NOT do that... everything posts in the exact order it was purchased).

And it was a giant pain in the ass to find a branch... they did share ATMs, but it was a $3 fee.

It helps to also keep in mind the different banking laws across states. When I had a Bank of America account it was always a pain in the ass to do banking in WA while visiting family, being that my account was "based in" TX. WA has a lot of different banking laws, not sure which others might fall into that category but it doesn't hurt to check.

I quit banking with BOA because their way of posting transactions was exactly what SelinaM said about her credit union. There was actually a big class action law suit against BOA over it, so I just avoid them.

It seems really hard to find a good bank that is "everywhere". I have found it useful to call my bank ahead of traveling to let them know, I've never had them freeze my account if I made sure to call them beforehand.

BOA only charges if you do transaction inside the bank, need tellers etc, online banking is free
use ATMs, deposit checks via phone app, direct deposit , cash deposit @ ATM

No charges for online banking, no charges for min amounts etc.
I have never had a issue with BOA

wellsfargo loves to shut me down "call customer service" when traveling
I hate wells, they charge if you dont have a certain amount in simple checking accounts.

I think that depends on the account. Maybe I am still reaping all the benefits of "broke college kid"-geared accounts, but I don't have any restrictions like that.

That may happen. I opened a chase when I was working in Manhattan because they didn't have 5th thirds and for new Orleans. I opened a wells fargo in Denver because that's all they had in 08 when I first went there and I have a bank of America for areas I travel to that don't have the others as I don't like to leave cash in hotel rooms as I've had it stolen.

Really? I have a checking w/ chase & they charge me a monthly unless I keep a minimum of $1,500 in there. Weird

I guess every ones experience with banks varies from area and what accounts they have. I have wells and strictly travel( don't work local at all) I've been in 5 different states since the beginning of the year and never had a issue. I'm not charged a monthly fee on ANY of my accounts. If you have at least 5000 in them you usually don't get charged a fee.

I'm not sure either ,bc that's the only reason I still bank with them. I haven't seen any charges for that in my activity

I will never again bank with Bank Of America because they let someone have an account there under my SSN for 16 years, and then sent me a debit card with his face on it and my name, and sent him a copy with my face and his name. Then they thought I was the one using someone else's SSN. Never again.

They do not, or at least did not, verify SSNs. If they are unable to do that, who knows what else they are careless about.
