Here are ALOT of questions I have for you!
As usual, you dont have to answer all of them... and you add whatever comes to mind that i haven't mentioned.
    ------

Do you live in NYC now, or did you live there in the past?
Yes, I live in Brooklyn so it's a little slower than Manhattan.

When did you move there/ where were you from originally?
2011 I made the big move. Before then I was upstate (about an 1.5 from Manhattan).

How would you describe the city and your lifestyle there? Any comparisons?
The city is expensive but fun. It's lively and you would never be able to eat at every restaurant (if you're a foodie like me). Something is ALWAYS open (unlike upstate) and transportation is very easy.

How often do you work? (Is there a shift requirement for your club?)
Shift requirement is 3 days a week and I usually work 3-4 shifts.

What kind of things do you do when you're not working?
Sleeping, Computer, clubs, dining out, and hanging with my friends.

    Hobbies? Other jobs?
    Going to raves LOL.

What is your daily/weekly rhythm of living like? Do you enjoy it?
Mon-Thurs I usually wake up, take a shower, hang with my bf for an hour once he's off from work, run any errands (go to the bank, pay a bill, do nails, etc) and then I go into work. I usually work 7-3.
Fri + Sat I usually either go to dinner with my bf one of those days and the other either relax at home or go to a party.
Sun- Pure relaxation either on the couch or by the pool. Laundry once a month.

Are you happy with your social life/ relationships?
    Very much so.
    What is dating/sex like?
I have a bf whom I love dearly so I guess great LOL.
Did you ever attend or participate in art/ music shows/ events?
Yes, we go to music shows a couple times a month and we've been trying to go to the museums but we never wake up early enough ! LOL stripper/raver problems haha.

Do you run into custies often, because neighborhood/ social circles can be small and tight?
    Never.
Or never, because the city is so big?
    Exactly.
Is there a general attitude towards strippers that is different from the media, or other cities you know?
I don't think it's AS taboo here as it would be in a small town. So many strip clubs with sometimes 300 girls on roster, it's like whatever. Many girls stil wear wigs to try to hide their appearance but I've heard of only a couple incidents where someone was recognized in the club. This city is expensive, I guess people are more understanding.
At parties, when people ask "What do you do?", what do you tell them?
I tell them I'm a dancer unless it's family or old people, I say I cocktail waitress.
What is your favorite thing about living in the city?
    Partying and restaurants.

What is your least favorite thing?
high rent, no grass/houses, general expenses such as cabs.

For those who moved there, is it like what you expected/ how you imagined? If not, how did it differ?
It is how I imagined except I thought I would be going out more. What I didn't realize is how much going out actually costs LOL. I still go out a lot. I'd say 1-2x a week is a lot.

Do you live in NYC now, or did you live there in the past?
I lived in NYC in the late 90's

When did you move there/ where were you from originally?
My family is from true upstate NY ... near the Canadian border

How would you describe the city and your lifestyle there? Any comparisons?
Manhattan is like London in the daytime and like Paris in the nighttime !

    How often do you work?
At the time I danced 5 nights a week for 3 weeks, and took every fourth week off completely

What kind of things do you do when you're not working?
I was a major 'patron of the arts'

    Hobbies? Other jobs?
I was a respiratory therapist and worked in NY / NJ hospitals per diem for a while
I was also a singer with a band that provided a lot of fun but ultimately went nowhere

What is your daily/weekly rhythm of living like? Do you enjoy it?
For the three straight weeks that I danced, it was pretty much work / sleep / necessaries. For the fourth week it was pretty much 'party central'. Then do it all over again.

Do you run into custies often, because neighborhood/ social circles can be small and tight? Or never, because the city is so big?
Pretty much never ... my club custies were almost all 'upscale' business guys, while I lived in an 'artsy' neighborhood.

Is there a general attitude towards strippers that is different from the media, or other cities you know?
At parties, when people ask "What do you do?", what do you tell them?

This varied to the extreme depending on the type of neighborhood.

What is your favorite thing about living in the city?
being able to do just about anything I wanted at just about any time I wanted

What is your least favorite thing?
HIGH PRICES and HIGH TAXES ... because of these I quickly moved across the river to North Jersey, and then 'commuted' to dance in Manhattan.

^^^ I've been to both London and Paris, along with many other major cities around the world, and that was the best single line description of Manhattan I could come up with.

As to being 'homesick', even though I now live way south of the border, I still try to get back to NYC a couple of times every year.

I thought this article on why you should live in Jersey City instead of New York was interesting. I like reasons 13 and 14.

Here are ALOT of questions I have for you!
As usual, you dont have to answer all of them... and you add whatever comes to mind that i haven't mentioned.
    ------

Do you live in NYC now, or did you live there in the past?
I lived there for about 8 months a couple of years ago

When did you move there/ where were you from originally?
from la, going to college in la, so decided to do a summer and fall semester in ny to get a new experience

How would you describe the city and your lifestyle there? Any comparisons?
busy especially since I was juggling school and work and trying to cram in as many fun nyc things in my relatively short time span. um, lets just say I was very thankful that ny coke is good because I would have not survived without it lol

How often do you work? (Is there a shift requirement for your club?)
im pretty sure there was a schedule/minimum shift requirement but I never followed it. I was always doing hw in the dr, tipped well and was very polite to all the staff so they all liked me.

What kind of things do you do when you're not working?
my friend who I was living with dragged me to a lot of pretentious hipster bars which is not really my scene, I did a lot of last minute half priced broadway shows

    Hobbies? Other jobs?
just school, studying, I really wanted to take dance or yoga classes but they are all so expensive and the commute was a bitch so I ended up not

What is your daily/weekly rhythm of living like? Do you enjoy it? I did at the time but idk if I would now. I have a higher standard of living and idk if I could afford that while saving while working in nyc now. im probably going to move back for grad school and ill most likely pay rent at least 6 months upfront so it takes the sting and pressure out of daily earnings.

Are you happy with your social life/ relationships?
yes I made friends at work and school easily as well as thru my friend, nyers are more sociable I think

    What is dating/sex like?
ugh I only dated guys roughly my age which were all in that awful applying for grad school phase and it was kinda annoying to be around. the guys I dated had that cute slightly preppy look which I love and were always down to do something fun as opposed to a lot of the losers in ca who just want to bum around all day/night

Did you ever attend or participate in art/ music shows/ events?
professional, yes, but im not into the super experimental art or hipster music. I went to a bunch of jazz/musical theater open mics at cafes

Do you run into custies often, because neighborhood/ social circles can be small and tight?
Or never, because the city is so big?
never, ny is massive, most of my customers were from out of town anyway.

Is there a general attitude towards strippers that is different from the media, or other cities you know?
well obviously its frowned upon in college but stripping isnt exactly at the top at conservatives hate list. its not like were working at an abortion clinic

At parties, when people ask "What do you do?", what do you tell them?
student, most parties were student parties anyway so it was more about what are you studying. I also told people there that I was able ti afford this expensive semester because I had a very sizable savings account from being a child model.

What is your favorite thing about living in the city?
the people, the things to do

What is your least favorite thing?
I hate public transit. and walking. even if its only for a block or two its a pain with a small backpack. also nyers are too crazy about their food! you literally cant say "oh I found this great italian restaurant" without ppl interrupting you, heatedly telling you their opinions on all the menu options, which restaurants are way better and how anyone who likes the other ones obviously doesnt know "real food" like omg give it a rest already! it takes the enjoyment out of eating for me

For those who moved there, is it like what you expected/ how you imagined? If not, how did it differ?
I had visited a bunch of times so I had a good idea but I didnt expect to lose so much weight from walking around so much. when I came back to ca my dr freaked out because I had apparently lost 15 lbs which put me underweight even tho I ate and drank a ton there.
    here you go

This may be SUPER obvious, but I've introspected quite a bit about living in a huge city like NYC, and this is the conclusion I've reached:

If you are the type of person who will take advantage of what a city has to offer, and you'd prefer to live in a small space that allows you access to entertainment than live in a big apartment without that access, then a big city might be for you. If you would like to have the option of going out to great places sometimes, but you spend more time at home, then you should live in a city/suburb outside of a big city (the money you save on rent can go towards more extravagant outings).

Keep in mind that living in a huge city means not leaving the windows open very often (unless you and your pets are cool with tons of noise and pollution), living in a much smaller space (because shelling out $2k/month really starts to hurt once the honeymoon phase wears off), having to deal with parking (always costs extra), etc.

Be sure to analyze yourself from the perspective of what you do now. If you already live in a medium-sized city and find yourself rarely taking advantage of what your city has to offer, then don't assume that moving to a big city will turn you into a social butterfly who's cool with living in an apartment the size of a box. For example, it's easy to make the mistake of assuming that you would totally hit up the clubs in NYC even though you never do that in Portland.

This is not a post slamming living downtown in big cities. It's just really important to take an honest look at your current behavior to analyze whether or not the massive increase in cost of living would actually result in an increase in quality of life. For someone like me who loves walking around in big cities but never goes out to clubs/shows, it's a no-brainer. I'd much rather live in a small city 30 minutes outside of a medium-sized city.

I just moved here "officially" a month ago but have been here as a tourist about 10 times prior

When did you move there/ where were you from originally?
I'm from Sydney Australia but I was living in Canada, before I moved here- I moved here to be with my Partner

How often do you work? (Is there a shift requirement for your club?)
I just started working at Lace, there is a shift requirement of 3 shifts, but i haven't been there long enough to have done that many! Also on a side not I am looking for another club to work at

What kind of things do you do when you're not working?
I'm a musician, and a burlesque performer so a lot of gigs!

    Hobbies? Other jobs?
see above and drinking and eating- if they count!

What is your daily/weekly rhythm of living like? Do you enjoy it?
So far not at all, i am having a lot of trouble adjusting

Are you happy with your social life/ relationships?
So far but i got lucky i met a lot of people through my partner.

Did you ever attend or participate in art/ music shows/ events?
Yes, I have performed a few times and also go to a lot of shows.

At parties, when people ask "What do you do?", what do you tell them?
Depends who's asking... If they are friends of friends I tell them I am a dancer, if i don't know them well I say I do promo modeling.

What is your favorite thing about living in the city?
    Food!

What is your least favorite thing?
    Crowds, weather, smell, pollution,

For those who moved there, is it like what you expected/ how you imagined? If not, how did it differ?
It's all fun and games when your on holiday, but living here is a different game!

^Oh yeah, you reminded me about the smell. I've been to Manhattan a couple of times, and in the summer, it smells like trash. Noticeably so. Everywhere. Granted, during the summer most people have the A/C on, so I'm not sure if the smell travels indoors. But still...

I personally can't see any benefit to living in NYC instead of a slightly smaller city, like Chicago. (I don't mean to insult you hardcore, rockin' NYCers who're taking the city by storm. I'm just voicing my opinion.)

This is PRECISELY the rationale I came up with after actually living in Manhattan for about 18 months. With the commuter trains available from 'suburban' cities, it 'cost' me less than an hour a day of additional travel time to actually live in a NJ 'suburb' while still working, partying, and socializing in Manhattan. On the flip side, living in a NJ 'suburb' saved me the equivalent of ~$800 per month in rent ( current dollars ), saved me the equivalent of ~$3000 per year in NY vs NJ state income taxes, saved me another few thousand dollars per year via lower prices of groceries / utility bills / 'staple' items, etc.

Also keep in mind that the cost of going out will start to seem higher than it's worth if you're paying out the ass for rent/groceries/parking. So even if you go out all of the time in your current city, you may stop going out so much in NYC.

If I were to land some great straight job in NYC with steady pay and benefits, I'd consider moving there. However, I can't imagine the pressure of working as a stripper in NYC. Knowing that I have to make $1k+ a night just to cover basic expenses would kill me. If you're the type of person who thrives off of that pressure, then go for it. But if you're not...

Living in NJ is cheaper but as a dancer, you're gonna catch yourself taking cabs more than you think you will which going to NJ in a cab is NOT cheap.
Brooklyn is also a cheaper option. That's what I do.

Do you live in NYC now, or did you live there in the past?
I lived there all my life up until 2 years ago.

When did you move there/ where were you from originally?
Originally from Brooklyn, one of the outer boroughs from Manhattan

How would you describe the city and your lifestyle there? Any comparisons?
The city is beautifully diverse, with people from all over the world, different cultures and attitudes. I wouldn't say people people are angry like they like to portray us in movies but it's such a busy and overcrowded city that it's only natural that New yorkers are short tempered compared to west coast lifestyle that I' living now.

How often do you work? (Is there a shift requirement for your club?)
I varied in work schedule due to college schedule at the time. Anywhere between 3 to 5 nights a week. No requirement at the clubs I worked at the the time.

What kind of things do you do when you're not working?
I had an active social life with friends and dating. Went to MANY great places to eat, sporting events, clubs, galas, shows(off broadway/on), the activities are endless in this beautiful city! There was never a dull day in my life.

    Hobbies?
I traveled the world for my hobbies such as astronomy. You can't see stars in Manhattan but the Hayden Planetarium is just as amazing!

    Other jobs?
I was a shot girl, cocktail waitress, bartender, restaurant hostess and clothing sales.

What is your daily/weekly rhythm of living like? Do you enjoy it?
Again, every day was a new exciting day. You don't need plans because there's so much to do you can make plans at spur of the moment.

Are you happy with your social life/ relationships?
They all were wonderful no matter how difficult some were, they served for a good purpose in the end.

    What is dating/sex like?
VERY BUSY! It's a city where theres about 20 women for every guy, where the guys are mostly non committal! haha!

Did you ever attend or participate in art/ music shows/ events?
I studied music as a kid and performed for mayors, senators and other high profile guests during political and holiday events. As an adult I attended and enjoy so many shows that I stopped collecting ticket stubs after the shows/events. So much to do there!

Do you run into custies often, because neighborhood/ social circles can be small and tight?
YES. Even though NYC is Over millions of people, it's still a small world who'll you'll bump into, especially at special events, so DON'T BURN YOUR BRIDGES!

Is there a general attitude towards strippers that is different from the media, or other cities you know?
I live in Vegas now and being a stripper isn't a big deal but sadly NYC is still not completely welcoming to us in the industry but I'm pretty sure almost everyone there does some kind of adult side work to make ends meet!

At parties, when people ask "What do you do?", what do you tell them? I always told the truth. I'm a stripper. Again, it's a small world in a big city and surely it wold be bound to come out. I rather be called a stripper than a liar.

What is your favorite thing about living in the city?
You can meet people, eat food, from ALL OVER THE WORLD! Every day you can learn something new about a place you've never been to yet or wont ever have the chance to. I'll never forget meeting a pack of Mount Everest sherpas in town for vacation. AMAZING life I'll never get to do!

What is your least favorite thing?
Like Melonie said, HIGH PRICES AND TAXES are redic! But after living there, that's the price you pay to attain a well rounded life. Cheaper then traveling the world when you get the world at your doorstep.

YES. Even though NYC is Over millions of people, it's still a small world who'll you'll bump into, especially at special events, so DON'T BURN YOUR BRIDGES!
    Thanks! That's important to know.

Lately I've been thinking a lot about "ethical stripping"- I'm realizing that with each new customer I meet in the club, I become more and more likely to run into someone who will know/ recognize me OTC... and so it's important to have good business practice, not to just assume "I can do/say whatever because I'll never see them again, and it's not like they know people i know IRL"... because they just might!

I add more later, but living in NJ isn't the easiest thing if you are working in the city or other boroughs. NJ transit is pretty good, but they cater to business people or 9-5 types. Not so much 9pm-5am types. No ferries, buses etc after a certain time. The weekends and holidays means standing around waiting for the train to actually get there. The cabs aren't necessarily that cheap. I swear their meters increase faster than NY cabs, but I could be wrong.

After a tiring or trying shift, you may be even more irritable to have to take a subway train to the NJ trains, and if you don't live within walking distance of NJ transit, you'll be forced to take a cab after that. If there are more people than cabs getting off when you do, you may have to wait until a cab is available.

That is 3 different fares you have to pay also. If you were going from Manhattan to Brooklyn or Queens, all you'd have to pay is $2.50, even if you have to transfer.

I live in the same Jersey town mentioned in the link above. While it is a very nice place and cheaper, I still would prefer NY. The positives on the list only apply if you live in the right area. Jersey City is pretty spread out. Those nice pretty streets and Manhattan views, bars and clubs are only in certain areas. There are many, many suit and ties who live in those areas. The city knows that, and they'll price the rent accordingly.

Working in a lot of the clubs in NYC, I did see some familiar faces. Like I will see a customer and remember his face from another club. Even though there are a lot of clubs in NYC, it seems that the strip club circuit can be small sometimes. Like someone said, small world.

My experience living in NYC? Expensive. I loved it for the first few years because:

    -You don't need a car

    -public transportation is great

-You can find almost anything in NYC

-You can find any food in NYC, a lot of variety

-Very multicultural city, it can make you more worldly. I met many different people from different countries and I learned something from them. I met my fiance here in NYC, who is also from another country and he opened me up to a new culture.

-You don't have to force friendliness to people

-There really is opportunity here. There are a lot of colleges here, CUNY schools, that are very affordable compared to the average college. I think tuition was somewhere around $2k a semester for full time credits. So if you really want to go to school and want a degree, it won't cost you an arm and a leg to get it.

-It's the city! I used to go out all the time and walk around all over the city just to see the skyscrapers. I used to go out to Central Park and look at stuff, go to the malls and look at stuff, and just look at stuff in general. It's a great place to window shop too.

-You feel like you're at the center of everything and all of the drama

Why I don't like it now:

-All the skyscrapers and glamour wore off

-Seems like there is a bigger divide between wealthy and not wealthy compared to years ago

    -Expensive

-You will most likely need roommates. There are places where you can rent a studio for $1000, which is actually considered not a bad price here, but insanely expensive to some.

    -I miss driving

-Even if you do buy a car, insurance is going to be very expensive

-I miss living in areas where there are forests, lakes, and mountains. You can find those things by driving upstate which shouldn't take too long, but I miss actually living near those places

-Doesn't really suit my lifestyle. I don't go out and take advantage of the many night clubs and bars in the city, I'm not much of a party person.

-Competitive. Even if you take advantage of the cheap schools and get a degree in something, you will have a lot of competition. Maybe even moreso than other places.

-Dancing-wise, most of the clubs in the city are about selling rooms and that's how you make money. There are exceptions to those, but most of them are about selling rooms which can be very hard. I'm more of a wanna dance girl. You can make some money doing this, but it can get exhausting.

-I'm at that point in my life where I'm ready to a buy a house and raise children in a few years. My fiance and I are most likely not going to do this in NY.

I think living in NYC is a great experience when you're young. I was lucky to be able to move here and live here with family in my late teens to early twenties, but I'm about done now and ready to move somewhere else. Hopefully early next year.

I know there are threads on NYC clubs, but I was wondering about other dancers' OTC experiences there.

Here are ALOT of questions I have for you!
As usual, you dont have to answer all of them... and you add whatever comes to mind that i haven't mentioned.
    ------
Do you live in NYC now, or did you live there in the past?
    Yep.

When did you move there/ where were you from originally?
    2008. Elsewhere.

How would you describe the city and your lifestyle there? Any comparisons?
    Expensive.

How often do you work? (Is there a shift requirement for your club?)
3-5 days a week when I'm working. I take a lot of breaks for school/civilian work.

What kind of things do you do when you're not working?
    Yoga. Errands. Cleaning. Cooking. Sleeping.

    Hobbies? Other jobs?
    Internships.

What is your daily/weekly rhythm of living like? Do you enjoy it?
No. I don't enjoy it. Vampire hours and the day-time noise don't mesh well. I'm tired a lot. People are very intense on the streets. I am easily agitated when I am cranky and sadly, I am often cranky because of the lack of sleep.

Are you happy with your social life/ relationships?
    Not relevant.

    What is dating/sex like?
    Seriously?

Did you ever attend or participate in art/ music shows/ events?
Yep. Lots of them. Manhattan and Brooklyn mostly.

Do you run into custies often, because neighborhood/ social circles can be small and tight?
    Rarely. Maybe once or twice.
Neighborhood/social circles are not small and tight. Not small and tight at all. Seriously. Unless you're involved in some niche subculture scene you won't see many folks regularly... aside from the damn doorman.

Or never, because the city is so big?
You'll run into people on a weekly basis but those folks aren't club customers. If you happen upon a customer in your neighborhood it will probably be on the street or in a restaurant. Not a big deal.

Is there a general attitude towards strippers that is different from the media, or other cities you know?
    I couldn't care less.

At parties, when people ask "What do you do?", what do you tell them?
"Go Fuck Yourself." Just kidding! I say I'm an intern/student.... whatever I feel like.

What is your favorite thing about living in the city?
    I can walk to work.

What is your least favorite thing?
    The cost of living.

For those who moved there, is it like what you expected/ how you imagined? If not, how did it differ?
It's rough. It's a place full of of crazy people. You have to make life in NYC what you want it to be. It takes a lot of effort at times. Whatever. The discomfort builds character...

    ------

Do you live in NYC now, or did you live there in the past?
I live here now-I lived in Upper Manhattan for the first year then to Queens for 5 years and have been staying in Manhattan for the past month.

When did you move there/ where were you from originally?
I moved to New York in Fall of 2007 from the west coast but am originally from New England.

How would you describe the city and your lifestyle there? Any comparisons?
As other people have mentioned it is expensive and while there are a lot of free things to do around the city most things do cost money and that starts to add up. I'm pretty frugal though so there are ways to do things on a budget if need be.

How often do you work? (Is there a shift requirement for your club?)
Right now 3 days a week.

What kind of things do you do when you're not working?
I visit museums, eat out at restaurants, see live music, walk around the city.

    Hobbies? Other jobs?
    Arts.

What is your daily/weekly rhythm of living like? Do you enjoy it?
If working then sleep/eat/work. Days off relaxing and going out to eat or walking around the city.

Are you happy with your social life/ relationships?
If you put the effort in to meet people and make friends then it's great here, there are plenty of ways to meet new people.

    What is dating/sex like?
I'm in a relationship now but dating in New York sucks (my personal opinion obviously).

Did you ever attend or participate in art/ music shows/ events?
Yes-museums, galleries, art installations, live music.

Do you run into custies often, because neighborhood/ social circles can be small and tight?
    No.

Or never, because the city is so big?
    Never.

Is there a general attitude towards strippers that is different from the media, or other cities you know?
People here seem more open minded about it than how they would be where I'm from.

At parties, when people ask "What do you do?", what do you tell them?
    It depends on the people.

What is your favorite thing about living in the city?
Public transportation, museums/galleries, that there is always something new to see/do, cultural diversity.

What is your least favorite thing?
I hate the weather here most of the year, expensive, smelly, sometimes can feel like you are trapped in the city if you don't have access to a car, still feel unsafe sometimes, even though it is such a large city it still feels very lonely because everyone seems to be in their own bubble most of the time.

For those who moved there, is it like what you expected/ how you imagined?
For the most part it is what I expected one thing that I did not expect is that it still takes so long to get from one place to another via the subway sometimes.

If not, how did it differ?

*I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to be living here though.
