Default Why is colored hair not popular??

I was just wondering why colored hair (meaning non-natural colors like blue or purple) isn't really a popular or even recommended thing to do when working in clubs? From reading the threads on SW, it seems like a bad money making choice to go a crazy color since guys seem to prefer a more natural look. And in my club so far, I've yet to see a girl without a natural color shade of hair. I've seen crazy platinum blonde but still, it's blonde, just an extreme shade of a very normal color.

I've been dying to go blonde and pink forEVER but I don't want to hurt my money potential either. What have your experiences been like with having crazy colored hair yourself or seeing it on other girls?

Maybe because a lot strippers have extensions or clip ins.

That's your answer right there. The more mainstream you look, the more customers you will appeal to. If you're a good hustler or work in an alternative club, you can get away with coloured hair and still make money, but by and large, especially as a new girl, it's better to look as "normal" as possible to not alienate clientele. Additionally, a lot of club managers aren't into that look, so it can create another barrier to getting hired.

Blonde and pink is the one exception, I think, where coloured hair can work - if you mean just a few streaks, that is. You've got the blonde which dudes dig, and pink is super girly, so it can still fly and not hurt your money.

i am blond and when i put in pink extensions it really works ( just a few streaks, especially if its all curled together), so i agree with shanna. i worked with a girl with crazy colored hair, she didn't bank but idk if its because of her hair..a lot of them just don't suit the girls wearing them, they just clash with their natural coloring. one girl had ronald mcdonald red hair, but the minute she toned it down to an auburn her skin looked radiant, she just looked beautiful!!
a streak would be ok, all one color of craziness..nah..unless you are super gorgeous and really rock it with confidence and are the exception.
a lot of older customers are just not going to be into it at all, and that can hurt your money since so much of it comes from middle-aged/older clientelle

Probably the same reasons crazy colored hair isn't that popular out in the "real world" either. It's a very different look that only certain people go for. When you're just out and about, maybe it doesn't matter who you attract or who you put off with colored hair, but in the club, where you're trying to attract as many people as possible, the numbers of those turned-off by it are going to be more obvious. Especially in higher-end clubs that attract business men with money, they're going to go for more conventional looks. Sure, some guys like alternative looks, but the majority (especially older, more conservative men) probably won't.

But just a few colored streaks in otherwise normal-colored hair shouldn't be a big deal if the rest of your look is relatively normal. I've seen plenty of girls pull that off. It's more an accent of color, like wearing an accessory, than something that draws a lot of attention like all-over purple hair.

Unless you are a perfect 10 like Squeak don't even bother. I've worked with her and she can rake in that dough like there is no tomorrow. Attachment 34534

I have a mohawk and I keep that thing on the DL as much as possible. There is no market for "expressing yourself" or trying to "be edgy". Just stick to the norm. There's a reason why the "stereotypical stripper" formula has worked well for so long.

I've often thought that having the pastel lilac colored hair might do ok since it would look blonde in the lighting.... I'm working on a human hair wig right now that is currently platnium blonde but I'm really wanting to do an all over pastel lilac..... What do you guys think?

^You just answered your own question . The more mainstream your look is, the wider your customer base will be.

But really, it depends on the dancer and on the club-if she is a seasoned hustler at a dive, alt friendly club or rocks a mainstream look apart from her hairstyle at a more upscale club then it can work. It can also hurt your chance of getting hired at some clubs i.e. more upscale clubs.

A friend of mine went from a natural colour to bright red and it instantly hurt her money. We used to do doubles often and easily, then suddenly the guys only wanted to take me. As soon as she died her bright red hair brown, her money went up.

Some dancer's feel that looking mainstream is "just not me". But, you aren't there to be "you". You are there to be someone's "fantasy girl", and with a mainstream look you have a better chance of being almost every guys "fantasy girl". By making bold or different choices with your look you are limiting your clientele and therefore possibly cutting your money in half.

Although I'm not a dancer (cam model) I had vibrant purple hair (like my whole head) for about.. A week and a half and it was like pulling teeth to get customers to tip. It probably cut my earnings in half, if a bit more. Some girls can rock it though, I was not one of them. :\

Men go to strip clubs to look at real-live versions of the women they whack off to online, or the women they see in Playboy. They don't want their beliefs and perspectives to be challenged. They want to be comforted and validated. And women who dye their hair unnatural colors tend to be "feminists" (oh god, say it isn't so!) who want to challenge what's sexy. Horrifying, I know.

As someone mentioned above, you can get away with it in some cities, and every now and then you'll come across a customer who thinks it's rad. But 90% of men want a more predictable flavor of sexy. And note that "getting away with it" is very different than "banking off of it."

I work in a club where almost all the girls are next-door-looking or natural. I, myself have blonde hair and I've dyed half(underneath) red surprisingly most of the customers love my different hair, I guess because I'm the only one. Recently I shaved a largeish side cut and so far everyone even some of our most conservative customers love it and were disappointed when I said I'm getting rid of the red & going all blonde. A few asked me to reconsider or even do it another crazy color

yea ^^ Not ALL guys want the girl next door/ natural conventional type contrary to popular belief. Hell, I've been making better $$$ since my look has changed over the last few years I still got dances when I had teal hair, in fact they liked it more than my black hair now

I think a huge factor is knowing what alternative colours look good with your natural skin and eye coloring, and in addition, applying the colour properly, and styling it in a more "conventional" manner. As in: a girl with a carefully selected shade and conventionally sexy style is more likely to be able to bank with coloured hair than a pasty girl with a fire-engine red pixie cut. I've done blonde and pink, and while it looked awesome when my face was caked with make-up, I have naturally pink undertones in my skin and whenever I got warm the colour of my hair just brought them out soooo much more and made me look gross and red faced more often than I would have liked. Lilac, on the other hand, counter acted this, and made my skin appear less pink, even when I would be feeling a bit warm, it was a better choice. I want to add some lilac in again, but this time I plan to just use clip-in extensions so it can be temporary. The extensions might be a good idea for you too to just ease into the look and see if you like it.

Perhaps this is controversial, but I believe that a girl who has a bright-pink mohawk and makes $1,000 a night could probably make $2,000 a night if she'd get a more conventional haircut / color. In other words, just because you can be successful as an oddity doesn't mean you wouldn't be more successful if you were to adopt a more mainstream look.

There are always exceptions, of course. It's all about making sure that your appearance doesn't get in the way of your hustle; even better if your appearance accentuates your hustle. And perhaps even better if you're so conventionally gorgeous that you need not hustle at all...

To an extent, I agree. Sometimes I find that standing out in a sea of Barbie-types can work wonders for getting dances, as can being the only one in your niche. You DO have to know how to work it though.

I would definitely agree that even with colored hair, tattoos, piercings - the closer that you can get to the "conventionally pretty" look, the better. I know that I do better when I am dolled up in black lingerie, stockings, diamante jewlery, understated smoky eye, and my purple hair all curled and fluffed - I look like your conventional stripper - just one that has been doodled on! It makes it MUCH easier for those guys who aren't a fan of the alternative look to look past it. Whereas if I was in crazy makeup, mohawk, furry leggings and neon rave gear....yeah. Not so much with the money. (Which is the opposite for the typical Barbie girls - who can ROCK that kind of look so much easier.)

Honestly, I think that it is all about a balance between stripper-you and real-life-you. Would I do better if I dyed my hair blonde, layered on the fake tan, took out most of my piercings and covered up my existing tattoos and didn't get more? Probably. Would it be worth the extra money to do something so opposite to who I am? Nope. For some women, it IS worth it. For me, stripping finances my life, rather than being the focus of my life, so if I can do as well as I need to with an alternative look, I'm happy.

One more thing: remember, a lot of clubs won't let you work if you look too alternative. So it's not necessarily that it is not popular with the girls all the time, but not allowed with the management.
I take cash, debit or credit. I just don't take shit.

This made me really happy. One thing I struggle with is wanting to change my appearance, but the "maybe someday I'll strip again" thing keeps me from doing crazy stuff like getting a pixie cut (I am SO sick of my superlong hair) or dying it. I'm jealous of your confidence!

There's a big difference between dancing with a wig + extensions and dancing with natural hair. I wouldn't be comfortable knowing that my wig might come off or that a customer might touch my hair and suspect it's a wig, or that a customer might call me out for having 'fake hair'. I'd be far too self-conscious to wear one and rock it. I also love being able to flip my hair around on stage, play with it while hustling, etc.

I've (obviously) considered that before, but it wouldn't work for me personally.

I would wear wigs depending on where I was working and yeah getting called out for having fake hair and customers constantly asking if I'm wearing a wig got to be so annoying that I did away with wigs for a while.

I tell customers up front I'm wearing a wig. I told one guy "My hair is fake, my tits are fake, and I'm still fucking hot."

This reminds me of a moment when I was a rebellious baby stripper many moons ago. I had my piercings, black lipstick and only danced to hardcore death metal. A veteran stripper came in the DR, took one look at me and chuckled. She said "I remember I used to be like you. We all go through it. But then I realized money is a lot better than being myself. One day you'll realize it too."

Many years later I still recall her words of wisdom.

The way I look at it is like this: The stereotypical stripper look is like a Toyota Camry. Mass produced, in high demand and very common. It has commercial viability.
Crazy stripper look is like an Ford Edsel. Not very common, definitely not in high demand and a niche market at best. Those who do want the particular look will pay good money but how often do those kinds come around?

I'd rather be a mass produced Camry.

So true. I've been working on my look to appear more like a "traditional stripper". It's the one that's always made me the most money.

I've seen girls that I've worked with that had a lot of really cool hairstyles that they sported at work. Short hair styles, bobs, mohawks, even dreadlocks at the club. But even though they had a certain niche, a lot of times I felt like they weren't making as much money as they could. I've wanted to say to some of them that many customers generally expect the long hair, seductive look that the stereotypical stripper look has.

Another benefit of looking more "mass-produced" would probably be less questions. Personally when a customer asks me too many questions it is a waste of time for me. If I had a really unique look, I wouldn't want to waste time with them asking me about my look, or if I like certain music because of my look, etc. There are ways to divert this kind of attention to get dances, but I prefer not having anything that would be too distracting. I'd rather be "oh hello, just your average stripper here, haha you're so funny, okay time for money!"

I did notice an exception in regard to colored hair, and it would have to be the color red. Even if it's a bright red, if it's long and let down, it can stand out a lot and attracts attention. I think because red is generally accepted as a regular hair color. Even if it's really bright, it seems a lot more socially acceptable.
