Bottom line: This is a supply and demand business. The highest demand is what customers are comfortable with. Sure they'll say "I love your look" and maybe tip you. But there is a big difference between what customers say and what they SPEND. I can tell you yeah I do make money being "edgy" with my 'hawk but it's twice the effort and I deal with a lot of bullshit.
There is a very small market for over the top craziness and the very few that pull it off are usually perfect 10's like Squeak. Odds are you are not going to be the "exception to the rule". Get back in the assembly line and get to work. If you want to "express yourself" because you are "an individual" go be a busker or a fucking mime. This is a business.

I think that there is definitely a balance to be struck between "being yourself" and "fitting in with customer demand" - unless the real you just happens to be a vapid, giggly, blonde with huge tits, of course!!! LOL
There is a halfway point for me - if I am too different from the "real me", then I am unhappy, and it shows. If I am miserable in my real life because I'm not letting myself do things that would impact my barbie persona, then my energy at the club is going to be much lower, and my hustle is going to be worse. If I resent things that I am doing for the job, I'll start to resent my job...and that won't help me make money. Then again, if you go TOO far to the other extreme, and refuse to create ANY persona or change anything to seem more "stripperly", obviously it's still going to be a problem to earn money!!
I like to compare it to choosing the music you dance to. If I am into random swedish death metal, well, i'm not going to dance to that, because it isn't "stripper sexy" and will alienate most of the customers. But I'm also not going to dance to random hip-hop, because if I hate the music, it'll show in my dancing, and in my mood. So I'll pick something that I enjoy, but that is more mainstream - personally, I find 80s hair metal works - the guys love it, it's sexy, it's mainstream, and I like it, so I enjoy dancing to it, and it shows!
Also....one of the things that I LOVE about this job is that I can be heavily tattooed, and look however I want!! For me, it's not about making as much money as physically possible. It's about working as little as possible so that I have free time for doing all the things that I love, and making a career elsewhere. I know that that isn't the focus for a lot of girls - they would rather work like crazy to make as much money as possible, but it works for me.
I take cash, debit or credit. I just don't take shit.

Hear me ramble about random things:
Hmmm, perhaps also it sometimes has to do with having an established dancer persona at club? I thought I could do a suicide girls alt look a few years ago with purple, blue, and pink streaks. But after not banking much and leaving in tears for a couple nights I scrapped that idea.

I really hate to say that "There is no money for alternative girls" - It all depends on the club!
Some of my best money I make is when I wear my hair up in a mohawk. I've actually made less money when I went from pink to blonde hair, so many customers didn't like it on me!
I guess it also depends on your dancer persona as well- My stage name is Vicious, I play heavy rock and industrial music, and I have many facial piercings. Customers have even told me they love that I'm NOT covered in tattoos, but still have the "goth" look. Both bars I work at are also biker friendly, so the boys eat up my style even more.
I think it's all just how you hold yourself. If you feel your look is lowering your value it will certainly show on stage. I'm the opposite, I try to look normal and I just make an ass of myself :/
Chin Up, Tits Out- It's SHOWTIME!

I tried an experiment just out of curiosity. It was easier with the wig.

Most upscale clubs flat out ban hair that is a non-natural color. No matter how hot or amazing the girl is. I've seen it happen. "If you change your hair color to something natural, then we'll hire you." Just the same as how many upscale clubs turn away girls who are not tan.
I personally love pale skin and also non-natural hair colors (even though mine is light blonde right now), and that's one thing that made me want to stop dancing. Money clubs don't like either.
Its sad because old 90s stereotypes are what the clubs are after, and that's just not whats popular anymore. Not in porn, not on cam, and not in real life.

Colored hair isn’t popular because it doesn’t appeal to the masses.
When most men walk into a strip club they expect and want to see someone who looks like a model off the penthouse pages, someone like say Jenna Jameson.
You know the big tit, blonde (doesn’t have to be but is most popular) with a slim body and little to no tattoos or piercings. Sure it is not the most unique look but it is the most profitable
And lets face it you got into this for the money didn’t you?

I also think it's regional. Take PDX...tattoos are the rule not the exception.
I don't think colored hair is a good idea for most girls. I work with a girl with blue hair and A LOT of tattoos. She is cute but certainly not a perfect 10 and certainly doesn't have the best body. I feel like when she was blonde with very little tats she was much more noticeable (in a good way) than when she went with a more alternative look. I remember this particular dancer getting upset when guys move away from the stage when she comes on and then immediately move back when she gets off. It just seems that for every guy who "loves that different look," you lose 3 customers (or more) who it turns off.
When it comes to money, the mainstream look is best. For the most part that means longer hair, few tats, and being thin. Of course there are no absolutes. There are some girls who honestly look better and make more money going against the norm. This can also vary depending on the club, customer base, and the other dancers. But if you want my honest advice, I'd never advise it.
I've known some black dancers who wore braids or their hair natural. While they may have "made money" with a more ethnic hairstyle, I noticed they seemed to be much better tipped and 'noticed' when they had straight hair. One girl actually told me she would've straightened her hair long ago if she had known it would make such a difference.
I attract the most customers and also the best caliber of customers when I am at my lowest possible weight. That doesn't mean I made nothing when I was 20lbs heavier. Of course I had guys who liked 'thicker' women and were happy to see a girl who wasn't really skinny. It still doesn't make it smart to cater to these people.
I'll never quite get why some girls choose to self sabotage themselves with really 'out there' looks but whatever. Hell, if I could transform myself into a white girl to make more money I'd do it. But that's a whole nother thread........

I so wish I had read this thread when I was a brand new stripper. I thought that dancing to heavy metal, wearing black leather and gothic make up and dying my hair bright colours would make me stand out, and guys would like that I wasn't 'boring' and 'like everyone else'.
Duh! Everyone else looked the same as each other for a reason!
Every now and then I'd get someone in who liked my look and spent money, and the alt kids who came in would always have one or two dances, so in my 'fu*k you, I won't do what you tell me' mindset, I thought that I was doing well and my look was working. It took me a long time to realise that the reason I was consistently being out-earned by new girls and just doing 'ok' on nights when everyone else was banking was because of my oh-so-individual-aren't-I-edgy look!
It took a few years and a bit of pride-swallowing before I dyed my hair blonde, got a fake tan, and started wearing cute lingerie sets and dresses. I still dance to rock music, but like another girl said, it's all about the 80's hair metal now, which is much sexier. The DJ at my new club introduces me as 'the rock chick', but more because he knows my personality than becase of my look, and I don't think the guys care/are even listening to him. I'm making money now, and I'd rather that than prove to a bunch of strangers that I'm 'cool and individual'!

It's not that I don't make money with my 'hawk. It's just a question of how easily that money comes.

If they want to commit financial seppuku by all means let them. More money for me. I can "express myself" with a new Louis Vuitton purse.![]()

Weare not allowed to have unnaturally colored hair at my club. But there are girls who have like a streak or two and they can get away with it. It really all depends on who you want to appeal to.

There was a girl at a club I worked at that was shaved bald with massive tattoos and supposedly she banked. I find that very hard to believe.
Yes, the type of girl that most guys prefer is definitely regional (I am white and blonde with huge boobs and believe it or not, this is not the most favored look in south Florida) but most of the time it is long hair and being conventionally pretty. How much ass and what hair color varies, but if people look at you weird at the mall, you most likely should change your look at the club.

While this may be partially true, I have to disagree to some extent. I think blondes with big boobs are generally a commodity in most strip clubs (except maybe not 'urban' clubs), however, I think there is also money to be made for girls who look specifically 'non-regional.' I'm mixed (Ukranian, North African, as well as some British, German, and Native American) and here in Michigan I definitely stand out at the clubs I work in and it plays to my favor. I think this helps me make money in strip clubs because I stand out. When dancing out of state I've even had managers ask what my ethnicity was while they hired me lol (they only asked out of curiosity, because I look racially ambiguous. My race has never hindered me from getting hired anywhere and it generally does not hurt my money, but rather, it helps).
Colored hair, however, is something completely different. Most girls will not make money with a very unnatural hair color. But, there are few who can actually pull it off and make it accentuate their dancer persona. Very few though.
"Rather have my feet hurting than my pockets."
My black that turned into blue then green then yellow was for fun and I did ok. The younger guys liked it.
My short blonde wig, I'll call it my 70's porn look, made money with way older men.
I also have red with black lowlights was universally popular.
My best money was made when I would wear my black, just below shoulder length, large curl wig. It came with little pieces of colored hair that I can put in to match outfits.
