Default Cutting and colouring your own hair... With salon quality

I know this sounds gutsy lol, but I wouldn't be opposed to saving myself the usual $100-200 that it costs for me to get my highlights touched up and have a trim. I have long hair that runs to about mid way down my back.
Ive also got some damage control to take care of from my previous visit to a salon. I went to a hair school, a really nice girl colored my hair(blonde highlights on half my head... But messy on some parts). I have dark brown/auburn hair and I wasn't sure if I should attempt to do my own foils for the first time ever, or if I would be better to just colour it all super dark brown/nearly black to darken the highlights and hopefully even out the colour.
I'm sure I could look up some videos on YouTube to have a guide, and I'll need to go out and buy some real deal hair scissors to use, since I misplaced the existing ones after I gave my daughter her hair cut.

does anyone cut and colour their own hair?

Yes..but only really basic stuff..I touch up my own roots, & I trim my hair every couple of months. The way I go about trimming (my hair's about your length) I put it in a ponytail at the nape of neck, then I put those tiny rubber bands (buy @ Sally's) at one inch intervals down from the first elastic for the pony tail. I have pro scissors, & snip off an inch or more, depending.
Honestly, highlighting is tricky. It took me years to really get it right for my root touch ups, using one color only, I use Wella liquid color charm & Ion sensitive 30 volume developer.
The people at the salon schools..eh, they can be alright for basic stuff, but they are just learning, & practicing on the customers. Nothing wrong with that, (that's how it works, & is so cheap) but to me (had my hair messed up so many times, by experienced stylists that worked on my hair previously for a long time yet) it's not worth the risk, for the margin of error that is so close. Plus it takes so long to 'start over' growing out my hair from the last idiot's goof up/damage..
What I do is, I get a good referral either from someone's hair I like, someone I know, or Allure Mag. has a salon directory, they visit the salons & rate. You have to weigh their opinion too.
I also get highlights professionally, but maybe once/twice a year, in between like I said I do my own touch ups. My color's not as light as I like, cause I need/like/want more highlights, but it's still pretty w/the touch up color I use, blends beautifully, doesn't cost as much, & saves my hair from damage.
    Hope it helps, good luck/
ETA also, I try as much as possible, to keep my hair out of the sun. I have a head band I wear, tuck the length into it, leaving the top of my head (where the hair's darker) to lighten a bit.

^^Wow, that's actually a really good idea. I might try that.

Sure, just be careful, sometimes the sun can bring out reddish/brassy tones in your hair too.

I love cutting/coloring my own hair. It sometimes takes me hours but I make dam sure it looks HOT when I'm done :p I usually have to cut & razor my bangs along with the top sections of my hair to get that scene/emo look & also the thinning shears used in moderation do wonders for one's hair! Sometimes I'll go a couple of months w/out cutting it & i'll just run the thinning shears thru it & it looks 10 times better

Oh I looove to experiment on my hair
When I used to have swedish blond hair and I ve felt like a 60 year old spinster because it actuall looked grey, I tried to make it a lil bit more fun looking I guess? So I bought a chocolate brown and a mahogany colored hair dye product and I highlighted it myself. I combed out my hair then mixed the ingredients and get an old toothbrush. I put it in the dye and used it like it was a comb. By the technique I got my highlights in no time and they looked amazing and they were much much cheaper.

I have issues with hair dresseres. Seriously all my life I ve been there twice. For the first time when it was the summer before 8th grade as an almost woman i wanted a nice hair style so my only command was just be able to put it up in a ponytail. I had a waist long hair and she cut it so bad when she was finished my whole hair was like i dunno ear long? if I can say that? sorry still practising english lol
So i was like no freakin way i will never ever go to a hairdresser again.
The second time I went to one because i wanted blond hair.
The dude bleached my hair 4 times before he actually dyed it so when he was finished the skin onmy head literally burned down.
Like i had huge wounds there for weeks.
After that incident I only dye and cut my hair myself and im getting better in it.

I love for example to change my hair colour from bright red to raven black and back to red again it is so much fun.
The trick is whenever u wanna brighten your hair, forget bleach it just ruins it. Use Artificial hair colour remover! It is the best! With 9% developer!

I ve searched for american products and i found this or choose the one from L`oreal! It is the best!
