If the smell is 'fishy', it's probably bv. It's very, very common. I wish I could say that it is easily treatable, but I had a bout with it a few years ago, and it took several rounds of antibiotics to knock it out finally.
Sionce then, i have found a great doctor who explained to me that most of the time, non-sexually-transmitted vaginal infections occur because of a ph imbalance. She prescribed boric acid suppositories, which have to be made at a compounding pharmacy. I used those for a few months, once every few days, and they changed things *dramatically* for the better.
She also forbids tampons, as they hold bacteria and menstrual blood, which is alkaline, inside the vagina for long periods of time, causing the dreaded imbalance. So, when I have to work and am on my period, I use these: http://www.amazon.com/RepHresh-Brill...=cm_cr_pr_pb_t
They keep the vaginal ph more on the acidic side, where it should be.
Also, my doc recommends rinsing the inside of the vagina out with plain, warm water in the shower daily... I just kinda hike my leg up on the edge of the tub and use my finger with the flow of the shower... this ensures that any leftover semen or discharge or whatever kind of yuck is cleansed away without the evil douching that just makes matters worse.
Of course, there is the standard practice of wiping front-to-back, peeing & washing after sex, wearing cotton panties, and using unscented soap.
Ever since I was educated in how to treat my girlie stuff properly, I haven't had the first issue... and that was almost 10 years ago.

See a doctor, and maybe ask about the things I've mentioned here. Best of luck and good girlie health to you!

Well if a guy goes down on you who doesn't have the best oral hygiene, that can mess with your balanced 'environment' down there. Even worse if he goes down on you and then fucks you (which pushes the bad bacteria up further).

Now I'm wondering if it's because you're protein-loading. Supposedly guys who do this tend to have really bad-tasting ejaculate. Why are you on this diet? Any diet where you're increasing the amount of processed foods is generally not a good idea. People don't need very much protein - especially if you aren't trying to become some kind of weightlifter/bodybuilder. If I were you, I'd stick to eating simple, unprocessed foods. Brown rice and chicken, lots of vegetables, salads, fruits, etc.

Clean food makes for a clean body!

^^ Could be the fingers. However, when the body gets ready for menopause, called peri-menopause, the smell of your vagina takes a turn, unfortunately for the worse.
not saying this is the reason in Your case, but I know for me, it was. I never have sex, so I knew it was that when I went to see my doctor about it. Hormonal changes are bitch to deal with. ph balance and so forth, You know?

I would give yourself a week or two of going back onto a clean diet and not sticking anything up there. The vagina is pretty damn good at cleaning itself as long as other things aren't messing with it.

So as long as what you're smelling isn't overpoweringly bad (you should be able to tell the difference between "woah - something is WRONG" and "something isn't quite right"), I would try to 'troubleshoot' your own vagina before starting on antibiotics or other things that could make the problem even worse.

Remember, you can eat a low-carb diet without eating tons of processed foods. Just make sure the carbs you do eat are whole-grain and have other benefits. Quinoa, brown rice, and wild rice all make great bases for meals. Eat whole-grain tortilla wraps with lean turkey and vegetables, or wraps with beans and rice (and Greek yogurt in place of sour cream). Spinach salads with red onion, tomatoes, and red peppers on top (olive oil / balsamic dressing). Almond milk instead of cow milk. White meat instead of red meat. And exercise! 100% cardio for fat loss. You may want to start taking a (refrigerated) probiotic pill to restore your vagina's pH and good bacteria. Or just eat high-quality yogurt with live cultures.

I should have added, I have no pain or anything BUT I've noticed my wee smells really pungent as well. I know this is a normal symptom of low carb diets. But my sweat and general body odour (I exercise so I do sweat)is no different.

As a side note, the body needs carbs to live. The ideal breakfast, if you want to feel good and have lots of energy throughout the day, is a (complex, whole-grain) carb-heavy meal that also contains a bit of protein and fat (e.g. whole-grain cereal with almonds sprinkled on top). Each meal should contain carbs, proteins, and fats. The body can't even utilize protein and fats correctly without carbs. Carbs are NOT the devil! People on low-carb meals often feel down and angry for this reason...

    http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2004/carbs.html

You may want to check out the book Food and Mood to help understand nutrition a bit better and why any sort of extreme diet isn't ideal. Clean eating and cardio with a bit of weightlifting sprinkled in is the healthy way to go.

Thank you. It has worked as I have dropped weight but, I would rather be heavier and not have this as a side-effect.
I havent gone dangerously low though and I have 'cheated' so I didnt think it would be extreme enough to cause this sort of smell down there
as a vegan I am limited in what I can eat lower carb that isn't processed but you're right-no more fakey meat subs for me now, I never ate those before.
Going to make salads and soups and have nuts for protein, if I stay on low carb at all

Good for you! I hear you on the vegan thing - that's tough. Just substitute hummus for the meat on wraps (and remember, you can make hummus out of any kind of bean and with any seasonings you like).

I try to "eat the rainbow" as much as possible to stay healthy. Whole foods with a variety of colors. And cardio!! If you eat cleanly and work out consistently, you have nothing to fear. I've heard good things about Tonalin CLA on here too - that might be a good short-term option to explore while you're trying to lose weight.

Can you elaborate on this a little more? I'm curious. Does plaque/bad breath cause infections?

I think I get what she means.STDs no, but if you put somehting full of germs near your vag, you can get germs on your vag=infections, be it a dildo, bath sponge, or mouth!

The 'bad' bacteria in partners' mouths can upset the balance of good and bad bacteria in your vagina. So yes, the same bacteria that cause halitosis (bad breath) can cause problems in your vagina. It won't necessarily give you a raging yeast infection or BV, but it can certainly causes some stink while your body tries to cleanse itself.

Generally if the guy/girl has healthy teeth and flosses/brushes every day, this won't be a problem. But people who have fillings or crowns are more likely to harbor bad bacteria (since bacteria can get trapped around/under those). And people who only floss once a week or so are far more likely to have problems (no matter how well you brush, only flossing can get the food particles stuck between your teeth).

It may be a good idea to have someone brush before going down on you if they just consumed something with lots of sugar in it (this includes sugary alcoholic drinks, deserts, etc.). But you should only do this in monogamous relationships or if you plan on using a dental dam: brushing and flossing can cause tiny cuts in mouths that increase your risk of transferring STIs with casual partners. So if someone brushes their teeth just a few minutes before going down on you, you're more at risk for STIs and less at risk for developing a yeast infection or other imbalance.

I absolutely LOVE Tonalin CLA! I feel like it picks up the slack for the times that maybe I don't eat the best. I definitely notice the difference when I don't take it!

I recently something similar happen and I went to the doctor and it was a yeast infection. They don't always have an odor, but sometimes they do. My doctor said depending on what part of your cycle you're in.
Anyway, I was prescribed one pill and it was gone within 48 hours!

If it's a yeast infection (if the smell is yeasty or bready), try the at-home garlic remedy! (research on SW for details)

I believe that you can also get BV if you have sex with a guy who doesn't wash his dick properly, especially if he is uncircumcised or is circumcised but just has some extra skin. I got BV once and my dude also had some kind of infection that made his balls hurt. At first I thought it was an STD that he picked up by (admittedly) having unprotected oral sex with this gross girl while we were "on a break" but the doctor said it was not and STD and was caused by his stupid ass not washing his dick after having sex lol. Good to know about the whole not letting a guy go down if he doesn't brush regularly thing, too.

Over the counter BV treatments really don't work well, and you don't know for sure if you even have BV. See your doctor for a prescription and the odor will be gone in a couple of days (but finish your meds of course)

BV isn't always super fishy in the beginning. The odor increases over time. Another hallmark of BV is that the odor is worse during/after intercourse.

It could be a mild yeast infection too, or maybe the diet changes. I say visit your doctor to know for sure.

I think BV meds are over the counter in the UK. Sugar probably already knows this. I have gotten pretty much anything I needed from the chemist there just by asking.

OP-Why not just go and see a Doctor? Your Vaginal health is already important but in this case it directly affects your income too. I am not advocating a course of antibiotics but if the Doc can tell you what the issue is you can then make some informed choices based on that info- (rather than leave it for a few weeks to perhaps get worse). Nothing wrong with improving what you put into your body in the meantime.

Please bear with me while I threadjack,

Charlie61, Actually, I believe people do need more protein than we eat, I agree about the vegies and salads (as much as you can eat). However, I only eat two pieces of fruit per day in order to avoid excess sugar (fructose reacts in the body like sucrose 'Sweet Poisin' by David Gillespie), and I avoid gluten and grains (Primal body/primal mind- nora gedgaudas). I consume complex carbs (in the form of vegetables) instead of simple carbs (white potatoes, rice, corn, breads (including whole grain), cereals, pasta, fruit juices, and sodas); http://www.dummies.com/how-to/conten...leo-lifes.html.

I strongly disagree with some of the points made about what our body needs foodwise because of what I've read, I appreciate that you are posting what works for you and are presenting research to support what you're saying but the diet I follow is markedly different from yours and I believe I am eating clean too based on my information sources!

In the comments section of your posted link someone replied with some points in line with my thoughts on simple carb and low fat diets "..... High carbohydrate intake causes systemic inflammation and damages the endothelium, setting the stage for atherosclerosis. .... Humans and rats metabolize macronutrients quite differently, and the assumptions coming from her {Judith Wurtman} research make quite a stretch. Carb cravers are really just addicted to carbs. Their brains are used to a steady supply, which is unnecessary. If they switched to mainly fats/proteins they wouldn't suffer dips in energy and have to carbo load to feel better again. My body makes what it needs out if the real essential macronutrients I supply it with, just like our ancestors.
Fats supply steady, long lasting energy. I feel so much better now that I no longer suffer from sugar crashes a few hours after eating carb rich meals (this includes whole grains)."

I make this post to point out that we all have different ideas on what 'Healthy' eating means and to give a little info on why I believe that High Protein, high veg and complex carbs with no grains or wheat works for me.

I think it could be you diet change. Try all natural yogurt. I know it sounds weird but I promise you it actually works. Buy a syringe, you can get them in the baby aisle at drug stores, after your shower insert it in yourself. I tried it and it works. Apparently, the good bac. in our cookies produce peroxide to cleanse itself, the yogurt has that same good bac. but just much more of it. so whether it BV, yeast infection or a high ph balance( they also have at home test for that in the pharmacy) in about 4 days it should get you back to smelling sweet.

    Thank you so much all.
I used the balance active last night and this morning the smell has gone as far as I can tell. You have to squirt this stuff right up you-it's a 7 day course.
I hope I don't have to go on antibiotics as they make me feel like crap and I am going to a festival on Thursday-not a good combination!
As I am using the Balance Active does anyone think I should also use a yeast infection pessary at the same time?Or not?xx
ok so I had to look up what was in vegan natural yogurt substitute and I don't know if there all the same but for the one I saw it said it was made from brown rice. Rice, starch, your body can made sugar and yeast from that and will explode your problem, you'll look back at today as being the good ol' days, so no. They have the probiotics in a pill from, you could just break open the capsules. You can also just swallow the pills but its wont work as fast.
I have a friend who had BV and a yeast infection at the same time and the doctor gave her one medicine in pill form and one she had to push up there. so Im guessing it wont work as well if you have 2 treatments up there at once
