Default What is a believable story to tell your family about your work?

I've been camming now for 2 weeks, and have made $1000 or around that each week so far; seeing as I can pull off at least a decent income, I know the fact that I am working will be impossible to hide. My entire family is extremely conservative and religious, so telling them seems out of the question. (If they do end up finding out, I will be able to deal with it... I mean, according to their beliefs, they shouldn't even be on websites like that, haha. Also, they know I am struggling to pay for school alone, so I have a bit of wiggle room. They already know I am an atheist science major; I've been the black sheep for a while lol). I did a search and found some threads like this, but they all seemed to deal with stripping exclusively. I'm wondering, for those of you who choose to hide what you're work really is from family/friends, how do you explain your income? How much detail are you able to manifest in order to make it sound believable?

Thanks ahead of time! : )

Online freelance work. It's broad and you'll have to look up the details on it in case they ask. Tell 'em you work for odesk.com. Works for me.

I'm also a hairdresser/MUA so that's what I tell people I do. When I was primarily doing hair, I worked crazy hours because I mostly took session/studio work.
You can also tell people you do medical billing, or medical transcription online.

Have you tried just not talking about money, to your family? Do you live with them? Do they expect you to account for your income to them for tax purposes? Why do they need to even know you have an income or what you do to pay your bills? Just don't bring it up. You're an adult. You support yourself. You paid for your living expenses last month and you'll pay for them in the next. Why should they know anything about your finances and your business?

I know there are people that do this work within close proximity of their family for a variety of reasons but I've always been an extremely private person, in my adult life and my family just hasn't entered into the conversation about my personal finances. They don't ask about how I make my money and if they do, I look them straight in the face and say "What's it matter to you? You're not paying my bills so why do you care how they get paid? It's none of your business." After that, I don't really care what they think or how they respond to that statement. I just hold that boundary and no amount of guilt (of which I feel none) or emotional blackmail is going to get me to waive it. I'm the same way about SOs or my dating/sex life, too, though.

Just be a more private adult! You said it yourself, you're already the atheist, black-sheep of the family. Realize that their religious/conservative angle is just another form of control over your personal life and take that control back. You don't have to share your financials with them and they aren't entitled to that information. Tell them you don't want to talk about it and change the subject. Don't complain about money or expenses (it sounds like you're doing fine, anyway) and continue to manage yourself outside of their influence. The less they know, the better.

@solodesire - Thanks, I will look into that!

@vivianbear - I do live in and pay for my own house almost 200 miles away from my parents, so on one hand that does sound like the best option. However, I'm not sure for how long it will work. Before I found out about this type of work I was constantly making jokes (especially to my mom) about being a broke college student; telling funny stories about things that happen at the donation center since I started donating plasma 2 days a week for money, joking about how I was considering donating eggs, and even told her I should probably start stripping (totally kidding at the time, but oh how the times have changed lol. And no, she did not like that joke). There are things I plan on purchasing in the near future that they would definitely find out about from visiting me or facebook or however, and I KNOW the topic will come up sooner rather than later about how I am affording it. If I responded to their questions how you did, I'm certain they would suspect I was really stripping or something like that. And even though I definitely agree that it is none of their business and I am completely independent from my parents, I am trying to rebuild my relationship with them and image after the whole "coming out" as an atheist ordeal. So, if possible, I will avoid talking about it for as long as I am able, but I would also like a story to tell in order to satisfy their curiosity if it comes to that.

Well, you've gotten several ideas. Now you just need to research one of them so you have lots of details to tell them! It's only natural for parents to want to know what their kids are doing for work, and also natural that they will ask questions about what you do tell them. Practise so you can deal with the good natured cross questioning that will ensue. Xx

A believable story I tell my family is that I took on camming as a supplement to my income
And that was that. Some responded well and some didn't but I don't care. I do what's best for me because no one will hand me an extra grand or two. A fish's gotta swim and a girl's gotta eat. I left home when I was 19 and did pretty much everything on my own so I've learned to depend on myself and never needed anyone's approval.

Whatever story you decided to tell your family just remember that people respond well to those who are sure of what they do

I agree that you don't have to go into detail, but you can say something like online sales or online marketing. I think not telling them at all is an option, but it seems like more drama fuel. If they press you about your sales job, then you can say that you don't want to talk about work, etc etc. But refusing to talk about what you do at all kind of screams sex work, or drug dealing/something illegal/something with stigma, ...or maybe CIA agent lol.

I work for fiverr.com selling twitter followers to people and selling advertising and also writing blog posts for people, according to my family. take a look at the website and pick anything from 1 of the categories.

If you're a science major, tell them you got a job working in a lab! Lab workers can have very irregular and frequent hours, I am speaking from experience from many years working in research. Just tell them you got some assistant lab position and you go in on nights/weekends to do certain experiments/care for research animals.

I tell them I run a business on amazon. I actually do so I guess it's not a complete lie. I just lie about the amount I make.
If you live 200 miles from them I'd probably just tell them your a waitress though, that is if they aren't going to be snoopy an try to get extreme details, show up or call the place. If they start asking about how you afford things just say you work at a nice/high volume place, my brother in law is a waiter and makes killer money...bc he works at a high volume place. Not cam-girl money but you get the point lol.

I have another job that's vanilla and also remote/online and they know about that. I am basically incapable of lying to my mom, so I really fear the day she finds out. I live on the opposite coast, though, and she knows I live rent-free with my boyfriend... There's no reason for my family to think I make much money and I really DO NOT considering that I live in NYC. Also, I'm pretty sure they have no idea what I make at my other job and it's known to be high-paying work.

I guess if I needed to make up a story I would say I do something else remote/online and be vague about it. Social media marketing is something a lot of us actually do (I'm lazy about it, but some of you are super impressive), so that would only sort of be a lie. SMM is a job that's commonly done remotely and it seems like most people hire someone for it these days.
