Default if you had to drive 1.5 hours..

so my club now is dead..and coupled with the ridiculous house fee i'm not earning anything anymore. maybe 200-350 a night and that's with guys trying to grope the shit outta you and hustling hard. i went to a new club in a new state this weekend with a friend and it was PACKED! all the guys i met there were from my home state ( might explain why its been so dead.they are going outta-state for their SC fix). the house fee was very low. i made 540, not great, but i figured it was my very first day in a new place and i wasn't used to the hustle and a little overwhelmed with the shoulder-to-shoulder crowd in there. i know i can make much more money my second or third time in, im a fast learner..only problem is its an hour and a half to two hour drive!! i got home at friggn 4:40 am !!
so, for you guys, how much more money would you want to make for it to make it worth it for you?
i got with a friend, so we split gas, and next time are going to split a motel room. itll be cheaper just doing that as well

Last fall I worked briefly in Wichita Falls, which is nearly 2 hrs each way from where I live. Since the club owner was also part owner of the cheapest motel in town, he controlled the room rates, & didn't exactly believe in dancer discount. Ot was actually cheaper to drove home every nite than stay over. The $$ was decent, $350 min most nites but I was also concerned abt wear&tear on my car.

I wouldn't take a commute like that again unless I was making $500/nite consistently, minimum. This is keeping in mind a motel room & possibly increased maintenance for your car. You're so fortunate to have a friend w/ you to split expenses!

An extra $2-300+ a night for a 1.5 hour drive sounds worthwhile to me, provided the next day isn't a total write off because you won't be home til about 5am. Making a weekend trip of it is definitely the way to go, I think, if you can find a cheap room that doesn't eat into your costs too much.

i know, its helped a lot..although i can't really depend on that, the days we can work are going to change this fall because my son will be going to kindergarten, so i gotta calculate doing it on my own just in case it sucks because it really does save a lot of money an wear on my car because we switch off;one day my car, one day hers

I personally dance in my own town, but I would say that at least half of my co-workers commute. A lot of them live roughly an hour away, but there are a good number who are farther than that, and there's actually a chick I know who lives *four* hours away who comes in for half the week.

You may not actually have anything to lose by commuting there for two weeks to try it out. If you don't like it, you can always return to your normal club, right? And you'll probably have customers who missed you or who would be totally mesmerized by your stories of working in a glamorous/sexy/lesbian cheerleader/all nude sex show club that you were too naughty for.

In this case it sounds like it's less about the money; it's more about money + working in a place where you won't burn out in six months. At this new SC, you will likely not only make more money consistently, you'll also want to work more often, you won't dread going into work, etc. Sounds like a great opportunity to improve your overall quality of life!

I think that's good for a commute. Obviously more would be better. I think it's great that you get to split expenses. That's a huge help. If you can sleep over and go into work the next day too that would make your commute more worth it in my opinion.

i hope so! idk what's been going on with it lately, but the owners are very greedy and try and squeeze as much money outta the dancers and customers are possible, and i think people are catching on. last year it was great, this year has been awful.

oh and you're right charlie, at this club the staff is also very polite and respectful compared to my old club , which was another reason i wanted to try a new one!

^^^ The IRS allows a write-off of 55.5 cents per mile for 'qualified' business travel. This figure is based on extensive analysis of what it actually winds up costing for vehicle maintenance and depreciation !!! So if the round trip to commute to this club is 200+ miles, over the long term you can figure that wear an tear on your car will wind up costing you $111 per night in after-tax dollars. This in turn translates into something like $150 a night in pre-tax earnings to wind up with $111 after-tax dollars. And as a 'commute' between home and a club, this round trip does NOT qualify as a business expense tax deduction.

If the distance between home and this club is more than 100 miles, IMHO you'd be far better off to go the motel overnight stay route. Doing so will make both a business mileage tax write-off and the motel cost tax write-off 'legal' ... which could actually result in higher after-tax earnings at the end of the year despite having to spend out of pocket for the motel room.

I personally would rather dance about 45 mins to an hour away from where I live. This way I shouldnt see too many custies while out at gym, running errands, driving, etc. Also, better $$ potential, you say this place is packed so I am sure you could pull more $$ next time with maybe a faster hustle or something. This deal doesnt sound too bad to me... Id do it as long as $$ stayed good

... because the tax laws define travel between a person's home and a 'regular' place of work as a commute, not business travel.

Over the past couple of years, the IRS has been very active in auditing tax returns which claimed large amounts of business travel tax deductions - with the IRS requiring hotel receipts etc. with the same dates to allow said business travel deductions to stand.

she said it was because i was under section C, compeltely self-employed. i've never been an employee or 1099ed. well i'll never go there again to do my taxes anyways, she charged me 400 bucks to fill out a few lines of paperwork and file them for me!!! and was very rude and condescending. that place sucks, never go there! ha, im threadjacking my own thread but whatever, taxes are such a pain i had better not get in trouble for her fuck up. my state sent me a letter wanting me to list off the names and ss# of people i earned money from or they wouldn't give me my refund, i just ignored it cuz how the hell would i do that??

^^They wanted names and ssn from customers or do you do another business maybe? If they want um from customers then WTF!? Weird... I would think H&R has some sort of protection against the audit, I mean they did do them for you and all, wasnt like u did it yourself.

Ok not to t/j, but I've heard really bad things about H&R..a guy I worked with said his friend went to them, they fucked up, & this person ended up losing his business..
Yeah that is weird about being asked that..
I'd try to find tax person that specializes in entertainers

yeah it was because i put "entertainer" on what i do. i don't think they got that i meant STRIPPER haha. but anyways, yeah im gonna stick with this club i think, if i can endure the drive, because its been going good! what a relief, my old club was driving me to do things i wasn't comfortable with just to be able to barely pay my bills, and so i decided i wasn't doing that anymore. not worth it!

I think it depends on a range of factors - comes down to a basic pro/con list.

For me, it wouldn't work - with other work/my dog/my partner - it just wouldn't be worth losing 3 hours a day to a commute!! However, if it doesn't impact your life massively other than getting to sleep later, and the earnings are consistently better, then why not? I would definitely think that a motel is a great idea, especially if you are a girl who likes a drink at work! Maybe you could do weekend trips?
I take cash, debit or credit. I just don't take shit.

^ yeah, turns out its more like 2 and a half hours on the way there, with rush hour! i only made 400 ( well, 394) on friday and the guys were nasty. they have a 3 shift minimum which is also really bugging me. with a two shift minimum i could just work a double ! im soooo dead today after not going to bed til 5 and driving so far..just having some doubts because like you guys said, i need to be making AT LEAST 550-600+ REGULARLY to make it worth it. if i wanted to make 3-4 hundred i could probably swing that at my old club 20 min away. my friend did well, and i don't want to be a stick in the mud or a negative dick but she wants to work wensday/thursday/friday. im not going in during the week if 4-500 is what you make on the weekends. weekdays will be dead and it aint worth the drive.
im supposed to go in thursday for a double and then sat night. the drive and lack of sleep ..the next day or two after i work are just recovery days.
im kinda bummed right now because i thought my second/third time there i would make a lot more than the first, now i that i get the swing of things. the drive there is a lot more like at least two hours..gah, maybe i should give it another shot this week. idk, just kinda nervous

Are they willing to budge on their shift minimum? If you're punctual, work hard while you're there, and consistently work 1-2x/week, lots of places will let that slide if you take a hard stance on their policy. I've had managers tell me "we want to see you in here 4x/week," and I've literally laughed at them and said "That's not an option for me. I understand if that's a deal breaker for you, but do you make exceptions? Otherwise I can't work here." If you hardball them a bit, they'll often let you be an exception.

Yup, this was the typical situation I used to find myself in when I first started dancing. If you factor in the 'lost opportunity cost' of having to devote an extra day or two per week to 'recovering' instead of working and earning additional money, on top of the full costs of putting massive mileage / wear and tear on your vehicle, plus increased expenses ( some of which are deductible but many of which are not ), this can quickly turn long distance weekend bookings into net losers.

I ultimately found that the best way to deal with this was to set up 'full week' bookings at three different clubs for three consecutive weeks in cities that more or less allowed me to start from home and make a big 'loop'. I would then call motels near those three clubs and negotiate a discount 'weekly' rate. I also set myself up with a 12 volt cooler and other necessaries to get by on paying for just one 'restaurant' meal a day ( usually breakfast ). I would work my butt off for those three weeks, and essentially spend the entire fourth week 'recovering' at home !
