    Default Attention All Gardeners!

So I just moved into a new apartment, and I have a big balcony right outside my bedroom. I'm looking to start growing some pretty flowers and maybe some herbs.

There are 2 cats and 1 dog living in this apartment, though the dog probably won't be on the balcony too much, but the cats will. So the plants need to not be toxic to pets.

Do you have any plant recommendations that are easy to grow on a balcony (it doesn't get a lot of direct sun light, but it is sunny most days in general)? So far I'm going to opt for 2 rose bushes and probably a mint plant.

I think roses need pretty much full sun to bloom..herbs are usually pretty easy to grow. Let me see what else I can come up with

When i was in an apartment, besides all the herbs i had a passion flower vine that i wove through the railing and it smelled amazing, created a little privacy, and you can make a tea from the flowers that is anti anxiety.

If you want something that is pretty, easy to grow, and doesn't need direct sunlight to bloom all season long then I would recommend some Impatiens. They are available in tons of colors, so I am sure you can find something pleasing. Also, at least from what I have been able to find, they are non-toxic to both dogs and cats. In most places they are an annual (plant it, and it dies around fall / winter time) but if you are far enough south then maybe it will last longer.

As for Roses, my experience has been that without plenty of sun, you will have plants that are mostly just the negative aspects of roses (thorns and sometimes non-attractive foliage) with very little of the positive aspect (the blooms!).

Certainly stay away from most Lilies as they tend to be quite toxic to pets. Not all of them, but most of the ones that you would probably want to grow

That is about all I know for now. Good luck!

Most herbs are safe for cats. This is a good site with a larger list than most of safe and non-safe: .

I grow Spanish Lavender on my porch during the spring/summer and move it in during the cold months here. My cats (who are plant terrorists) leave it alone. It has a beautiful bloom and smells so good. Definitely plant some catnip. It's very easy to grow from seed and hardy. To keep the kitties out of it until it's established you could put some chicken wire around it or a tomato cage. That way they can only graze what pops through and not mow the entire plant down. Many other herbs will bloom and look pretty too, pineapple sage is gorgeous. It really depends what zone you are in and the amount of sun (and time of day it hits) for flowers. I love dahlias and columbine. Both have done well on my partially shaded porch.

I grow succulents, lavender, mint, thyme, rosemary, basil, chilli, african orchid (might not be good for pets?), rhubarb (toxic), shallot, parsley.

Some great ideas supra. For partial sun areas I grow impatiens, lavender and begonias.
