Default What are good brands for cosmetics? Concealer and foundation specifically

My friend was complaining about the quality of the cosmetics, and price she has to pay for them, over in Moscow. So, i thought I might surprise her with some high quality stuff. I figured it would be super easy to do it, but then I found that there are like a billion different makers of cosmetics here in the US, and I don't know anything about them. My knowledge extends as far as knowing a few name brands from old commercials

Anyhow, searches on google for this info turns up a million different answers, and all are different as for what reason they like this or that. So, since my friend works on cam, I thought maybe ladies here would know best...

I am looking for what you would consider a good quality brand for concealer and foundation. I guess it doesn't have to be super top end like for use in Hollywood movies. Would I need to provide a sample of her skin tone to get an accurate recommendation, or does that matter for the brand? Thanks for any help!

Thanks! That link to the sephora site appears to be broken, but i tried searching for a HD starter kit. Is this the one you were talking about?

Also, wow...so many choices! X skin with Y undertones...and like 30 to choose from. I don't know how you ladies do it. So much work goes into being a beautiful woman. Just seeing this one aspect of it makes me appreciate the effort all the more.

^Weirdly USD for cosmetics is cheaper here Ive heard? Bonus about buyng Sephora is if you include the gift receipt and you buy the wrong shade of foundation if she's close to the Sephora in Moscow she can exchange it for free. Even if she tests it, opens it, etc. Ive had to do this a few times for foundations and higher end products and it was a seamless exchange. Ive never had to do it internationally though - you may want to double check with Sephora's customer service just in case?

If she has a brand and shade she uses now (that you can somehow finagle out of her without revealing your surprise gift intentions? lol) it is possible you can find the compatibility match for it online to take a stab at the closest shade. A bunch of blogs devote their time to that kind of thing, if you google around? Makeup Forever HD is a pretty popular foundation so there must be matches for whatever she uses now Id guess? For me the setting powder in that kit is a godsend on cam, so hope she'll be jazzed.

    Good luck!

Consider this yet another vote for MakeupForever HD. That stuff is brilliant on cam, especially with, as roast said, the powder in that kit as a finishing touch. The concealer is good, but I prefer Bobbi Brown Corrector for under the eyes and over any blemishes. http://www.sephora.com/corrector-P270555?skuId=1317650

MAC is amazing! they can go from very, very light watery coverage to coverage that stays put all day with no touch ups needed. it also hasn't made me break out, and i break out very easily.

    Thanks everyone helping out!

I found out this is what she has now but there are like 15 different things in there! I guess I need to find out which ones she uses out of that whole thing? Or do they all get blended together or something? I don't really know how these things are used hehe.

Well, since I am not smart enough to try to get a stealth answer regarding color, i just talked about our previous conversation months ago, and sent her link to the Makeup Forever HD as an "example" lol. Problem solved! Enough positive comments about that stuff that i will go with that one. Maybe at New Years will send one of the others mentioned. Thanks again, all!

Akuk she may be pissed BUT that foundation palette is just repackaged generic palettes from China commonly sold on ebay and marked up.

For example, that "Shany Foundation Palette" is just a version of this with "Shany Cosmetics" slapped on it a lot of makeup distributors do it. Hell if she has any of most of their other products and she's into ebay she can find them for probably 50%+ less. So if she's super into "Shany" and their palettes, she can honestly just go to ebay google "foundation palette" (or "eyeshadow palette" as on their site they push some of their big 120 eyeshadow kits which I have one of them I got for $4 including shippingon ebay D: ). She'll get them for wayyyy less and since she cams and I cam I know I run through a fair amount of makeup so I get her angst... so if she needs a foundation in the interim that is wayyy cheaper than the pricing on Shany, ebay?

But she'll be thrilled - going from a makeup palette where you cant use all the colors to a kit designed for your skin tone will be an amazeballs gift.

Well, I am pretty sure she isn't really into the Shany brand or anything. I helped her set up an amazon wishlist and while cruising amazon she saw it and bought it just to see how it was. From what she said, the stuff in Russia is generally either very poor quality, fake brands, or super expensive, so trying anything else was the goal. But damn....$4 from ebay INCLUDING the shipping? That is amazing! I will definitely tell her to look. While I certainly understand the value of a good product, sometimes the "good enough" product, when combined with an incredible price, canbe a good thing

Inglot the best pigmentation and there are several stores throughout Russia. I find the pigmentation better than MAC

    Concealer: MAC

    Foundation: Clinque's CC cream.

Sephora has this new smart phone thing that scans your skin and finds the best match for you in store. I did it and it works great. Used to only do MAC, but the Clinique CC cream I got matched with is perfection in a tube.

I really love BB creams, in particular Skin 79's in the hot pink or orange bottle varieties. (They're Korean. You can buy them on Amazon, but the prices are about the same on the Skin 79 site, and you know it's authentic) Clinique's Blended Face Powder is a classic that never ever fails. The combination of the BB & the Clinique powder makes for a gorgeous, "airbrushed" finish, and the cost is not outrageous... $30-ish for the powder & $20-ish for the BB. I use Make Up Forever's Full Cover concealer, which is kinda pricey, $40 for a tiny tube, but it lasts forever bc you need so little... I've had a tube last a year, and I use it on face *and* tattoos. HTH

Thanks for all of the help here. It will be a surprise, and the worst case is she hates it all, then I fall back on the old "I'm a guy, I don't know about such things" defense.

Despite your mention of not-necsessarily-used-in-Hollywood-movies, I must must MUST recommend CinemaSecret concealer.

And of course, MakeupForEver HD powder.

Chanel foundations are heaven sent! Laura Mercier is great too has a powdery finish. Recently got samples of Georgio Armani foundations which are so nice and dewy.. gives that runway model skin! Worth the investment. The ingredients seem top notch, I never break out, the colors are great and the pigments seem finer which means it looks more flawless, doesn't appear to sit on top of the skin as drugstore makeup does on me. I highly recommend Chanel Mat Lumiere and Perfection Lumiere. Fantastic formula's and smell amazing. Long lasting. Price tag is $55 but seriously worth it!

Literally the best investment I have ever made for my job is Laura mercier foundation powder. I put my regular foundation on, and then i dust this over it and it literally looks like my face is made of porcelain--not a pore in sight! Throughout the night, I'll come back and use a big synthetic brush that doesn't get too much product on it to lightly dust any areas that are getting sweaty or oily. I look brand new! It's amazing stuff. I have really red cheeks, and sometimes I can even wear it with not foundation/tinted moisturizer at all and it covers the redness.

    Good luck!
