    Default The Truth About Exercise

    Very much worth watching.

Looks at Genetic testing to show who is an exercise "non responder" vs "super responder" in the future could be very helpful to help people really personalize their exercise program, looking at HIIT (where 3 minutes PER WEEK is all you need to get the same benefits as hours per week...) , and other topics of interest are covered in this BBC special.

Tons of good info. Where this show completely missed the boat is no discussion on the benefits of resistance training vs traditional aerobics for weight loss, impact on metabolism, preservation of LBM, etc.

    That's my only major criticism.

"Join British journalist and physician Michael Mosley on his journey to uncover the truth about exercise. Mosley reveals the latest scientific discoveries about how our bodies respond to a workout and why individuals respond differently."

Watched the whole damned thing. Pretty riveting. Bonus trivia: Pizza Hut in England. Off to look up HIIT on youtube.

Problem with looking up HIIT on YT is most of what you will find is not actual HIIT. If you just follow what you saw him doing, you'll be doing true HIIT. 30 second "on" and 1 minute off, X 10* is what I do either on a stationary bike (as he did) or some stepper/elliptical kinda thing works well.

You work up to that, you don't start with that!

Hmmm... I have no access to any machines. Might I just run or jump in place as fast as I can, or am I just SOL?

Sprints are a form of HIIT. The Tabata protocol is tough and last only 4 minutes. HIIT is not a must form of exercise, but it sure is a time saver! HIIT burns me out, so I don't do that much of it, and prefer resistance training and LISS personally, and a major flaw in that show was no discussion of resistance training.

I love this couple, and do several of their workouts regularly. Wonder if they're up to anything useful here: https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...be.R1qmiSaEUXM

Can't hurt to try, I guess...

Probably perfectly decent workouts, but they are not HIIT. What they and others are doing is using the term "HIIT" for marketing but it's not HIIT as the show linked above does a pretty good job of showing: a maximal effort done for a short period of time.

    Good luck!

I'll just keep to what I've been doing all along, then, which is running in place as fast as I can through commercial breaks... and market it to myself as HIIT. Thanks for the vid. It really was interesting.

If it works for you, all good, but you noted how much running he needed just to "burn" off a few hundred cals? Just sayin'

Jump rope, planks, push ups, etc are all excellent zero cost effective exercises. For a few $$$ get a TRX suspension trainer and you have a all sorts of options for exercise at home that takes up essentially no room.
