Default tips for NON cakey makeup

i usually use just a tinted moisturizer/watery sheer foundation day-to-day and then a very heavy foundation that stays put ( MAC) when im at work, and then kinda press in some good quality talc-free powder to get the shine out an even it up. then dust on this blush/bronzer with a large kabuki brush. sometimes itll look amazing and other times itll look totally cakey and hard and gross!! wtf am i doing wrong? should i not let the foundation dry first? or let it dry more? i tried just the foundation but it looks shiney and i hate that. i try to replicate exactly what i did on days where it looks great, but it ends up looking very very just..CAKEY! ugh. any tips??
EDIT: i have dry/break out prone skin that is pretty sensitive so i try to stay with good quality/ natural makeup i'd like to try primers but i'm nervous about layering too many chemicals on my face

My makeup always looks more cakey if I don't moisturize my face before I put it all on. Try putting some on right before you do your makeup and see if that helps at all.

^ yes moisturize & a primer always makes the make-up application smoother & more flawless. Primers will not hurt your face, just put on a very light layer & only concentrate on areas around the eyes & forehead & cheeks. I've found if I dust on powder after the foundation I'm flawless! HTP

A synthetic kabuki brush works wonders! I use MUFE hd foundation which can look cakey when applied with a traditional foundation brush; when I used a synthetic kabuki, it looks airbrushed. Sephora and sigma have great synthetic kabukis

that brings up another thing, i use little foam makeup applicators to put the foundation on, not a brush, never even considered a brush hmm. i moisturize the shit outta my face every day, so maybe its too wet when i put the powder on? but yeah thanks guys im going to do a primer and then just dust on the powder instead of layering it on

Totally agree with moisturizing...odds are the days when your makeup looks cakey its because your skin is having an "off" day so to speak, so yoru mkaeup isnt going on as smooth. I cant moisturize right before I put on makeup, but what I do is use an intense night moisturizer when I go to sleep and that helps a lot.

Also agree with the primer. I dont need it everytime, but there are some days when a primer makes all the difference between flawless and wtf? lol

It's a pretty common misconception that natural products are always better for you skin. Everyone's skin is different, so I'm not saying you should revamp your collection of makeup and skincare products to get chemical-happy, but if your skin isn't sensitive to any of the ingredients, there's no general health reason why you should not wear a primer. IMO, it is hugely beneficial to the finished look. I've tried a lot of different brands, and even tried to hop on the Monistat bandwagon. Keep in mind, my skin is oily, sensitive, and loves any excuse for a breakout. But these are my short reviews for the ones that come to mind right now:

Boscia's Skin Perfecting Primer: took the shine off my skin and reduced the appearance of my pores dramatically; made for a smooth application; was a bit expensive given the size of the product when I had it a few years ago
Sephora's primer: "meh" in every respect... didn't suck; didn't seem to do anything worthwhile
Monistat: some swear by it, but it did nothing for my pores, made my skin look greasy, and I broke out horribly
Revlon's PhotoReady primer: cheap, decent in terms of smoothing my skin for application, but did nothing to even the color of my skin or reduce the appearance of pores
Smashbox PhotoFinish (I used the redness reducing formula): big bottle for $30 (though primer is pretty expensive per unit even when compared to other makeup products), evens out my skin tone really well, reduces the appearance of pores, doesn't make me greasy

My two favorites are Boscia and Smashbox, obviously.

Re: brushes, if you use a liquid foundation, a stippling brush is great for application. You can find Real Techniques brushes at Ulta or online, and the stippling brush is probably like $15. You end up using less foundation during application, and it looks more airbrushed and light. Their regular "expert" face brush is really good too. It just depends on what kind of application you want. I have both, but my stippling one is newer, so I've been using it more often. I have gotten more compliments on how smooth my skin looks with it than with the expert face brush.

The type of foundation you use is really important too. I think a buildable foundation is good because you can go as light or as thick as you want. Like Madison, I'm a big fan of Make Up For Ever (though holy fuck I want to turn their name into compound words). I use their HD foundation, and follow it up with a loose setting powder. For fuller coverage, you can build more layers, use a concealer stick under your eyes and other areas that need highlighting, or you can follow the liquid foundation up with a pressed powder foundation about... 3-4 minutes (estimated) after the liquid.

During the day, I tend to just use a liquid sunblock and no moisturizer in addition to it, but if your skin is dry, a good moisturizer as your first step might help, though I imagine you already use one. I'd recommend CeraVe's or Clinique's Dramatically Different (note that they have a thicker one for dry skin).

Yup, I'm loving CC cream which is the same thing as BB cream but it treats sunspots as well.

Do yourself a favor: Get into some good light and really *look* at your face before you start slathering stuff all over it.
I used to just go into the makeup routine with the mindset of "let me hurry and cover up this terrible skin I have", which led to me using the most products and highest possible coverage, which of course led to cake-face... which led to me thinking my skin is just awful & nothing will make it look good.
I dunno what made me decide to try it this way, but one day I just took a really good look at myself and decided what really needed covering. There's a little redness around my nose, maybe some darkness at the inner corners of my eyes, etc...
I wear a moisturizer with sunscreen and a primer every day, all over, to improve the performance of whatever I might put on top of it. (CeraVe daytime & Neutrogena Healthy Skin, respectively)
I own Skin 79's orange bottle BB cream, but I don't always use it all over my face. If my skin is terribly dry or red, I will use it all over, but I usually just use it on more troublesome "regions" of my face (like right in the middle). Basically, using BB cream or foundation the way most would use concealer.
I have Make Up For Ever Full Cover concealer, but I mainly use it on my tattoos or if I have a reeeaaally ginormous red zit (so hardly ever).
I use Clinique Blended face Powder, but only over the areas that I used BB cream, to set it.

This way, the pretty parts of my skin show, and only the "bad" parts are covered.
Let your pretty skin glow. It can't glow through cake, no matter how high-quality the cake is!

i used to wear makeup all day every day, but lately i've been only wearing it on days that i work (i still moisturize 3 times a day and wear sunscreen daily though). and i've noticed my skin is getting SOO much better!! all my cysts and zits are gone, there are a few blackheads and uneven skin tone, but i figure ill correct my diet and so some facial steams or something! so happy, because yea you're right i just slathered on makeup to everything and put on waaayy too much powder!

How does the BB cream work? Is it like a light foundation? I'm currently using a light application of foundation & afterward setting it with MAC mineralize powder & it looks great. I'd love to save my stuff though & look into wearing BB cream on days where I want more of a natural look. Btw the primer i use is great & super cheap, it's by Loreal. I only use a pea size & only apply it to my eye & nose areas for all day coverage.
