Default Toenail completely ripped off... how to treat, when to go back to work?

So four days ago i stubbed my to eSO HARD at work that it completely ripped my toenail off my big toe... it hurt like a mother fucker and was bleeding so bad. i went to the dr the next day and thank god neither my big toe or my second toe was broken but i thought that they would be for sure. they were just so swollen that i couldn't wiggle them...

so anyways, it still hurts a lot, i'm walking funny, so i definitely won't be at work for a while... my nail bed is completely exposed and is in the process of healing. my roommate works at a homeopathic health store and gave me a tea trea oil cream for wounds to put on it to keep it clear of anything and help the skin heal.

what else should i be doing to help it heal faster? has anyone else done this?

and most importantly, how long do you thnk it will be until i can WORK again?? I know its going to take 6-12 months for the toenail to grow back in, but I only have about 2 months worth of bills saved up and dancing is my only job... :/

    any advice is really appreciated...

    tea tree oil is good.

Eventually it will toughen up. Right now it's just very sensitive and obviously there's a scab. I would try getting some platform sandals and massive leg warmers.
This way you LOOK like you're taller and wearing heels, but you're going to have to walk and dance very carefully. But at least there should be less pressure on your toes even in open-toed stripper heels, to be able to walk around and dance.
After your wound has healed up, I'd probably use some nail glue and put it all over the skin where there's normally a toe and see how well that grips-- so maybe it'll be less sensitive? but I've heard of people working without toenails after they've healed but before the nail grows in.

oh, and take a shit ton of biotin so your nails grow in faster.

second the biotin - will the club cut you some slack? like letting you work the room rather than the main stage? maybe some sympathy money plus regulars will pull you through - sorry that sucks

yeah do biotin. I actually had an ingrown toenail a few years back. It got super infected. the doctor ripped the toenail off a few times cause it grew back weird and would dig into my skin when it got to a certain length..so he had to remove the whole thing, and kill the nail. I just paint the skin on that toe and call it good. you can also get a fake toenail put on too. sounds like a big deal to lose a toenail or whatever and at first i was sad.. but nobody cares ^.^

oh yeah and it took a good month for mine to heal properly. keep oinment on the on it... a lot of it.
    wrap it.
and the skins gonna be sensitive but you should get like a callous and then thats when you can put the fake nail on cause it has something to stick to. I would go to boogie toes put on.

wait, its safe to put acrylic over the nail bed without a nail once the nail bed is healed up?

I think she meant a glue-on nail. Nail glue is just superglue, and it's safe to close cuts with superglue, so it should be safe to glue a plastic nail onto a mostly-healed nail bed.

First of all... Ow!! I'm so sorry! I've done it to my pinkie toe and it sucked!

    To the problem...

Biotin and neosporin! Maybe you can wrap it with beige gauze for work to hide it.

putting anything like glue , acrylic anythin that will not let the toenail breathe will cause a mold to grow, possible fungus. Using other parts of the body , yes, fine but not the feet. Not on your toenails.
Your feet sweat , sweat will trap under the glue or acrylic then you have lovely dark greenish mold to deal with.

Professional suggestion FROM ME is to let it heal, I know its a pain. you can polish on top of the skin, the actual nail bed will hold polish BUT it must be removed ASAP.

To prevent infection, reduce pain, and aid healing, the nail or nail bed must be soaked. In a clean container with one quart of lukewarm water, add 2 tablespoons of Epsom Salt. Soak the foot, or just the toe, for 15 minutes. Carefully dry the toe with a clean cloth. Allow it to air dry for 15 minutes, and then apply antibiotic cream and gauze
When the new nail begins to grow out, it may appear to be ingrown or deformed and possibly painful

This happened to me a few years ago. You will be fine to go back to work in a few days. A week tops. Just be super careful with floor work and where you put your sad little toe. No boots! Maybe knee socks or something like for a few days so you can wear a band aid and a little cushioning. When your toe starts to grow back a little bit you can get an acrylic toe nail ($10 at the salon). They pop off a lot at first but just deal with it so you don't have an ugly foot. I wouldn't recommend the drugstore kind.

^^^ if she doesnt have a nail to support the acrylic, bad idea, esp FOR DANCERS even with a actual nail holding the acrylic the foot is sweating causing the mold/fungus crisis. Sweat comes from the inside out, if it cant escape mold or fungi will grow.

for her nail to grow out she doesn't need to apply acrylic. Every time "pops off" happen , the new nail will lose a layer causing it to be weak, thin and back to step 1.
some ppl have luck with this, most do not.
Some have thicker toenails than others so this is not really important to them.

If you are dead set on a acrylic nail , find a good manicurist that specializes in pedicures. He/she will know how to "anchor" the acrylic so it will pop off (you want this to happen) when it gets too sweaty BUT you are risking it falling off on stage or when you pull off your socks.

When I did it I only got it it done when I was working. I had no problems but like you said everyone is different. I was only able to do this after I had a bit of growth. Definitely put a bandaid over it while you are working. It looks gross.

some ppl do it w/out growth That is what I dont want her to do. (Nail techs will sometimes do anything for a buck)

There are sweat proof clear bandages. it will look natural until you can get it fixed.

also when you can touch it, massage the oil into it to penetrate the growth.

thank you so much everybody!! i went to the dr and i need to do daily hydrogen peroxide soaks (which actually dont hurt at all, just feels like putting my foot in water), cleaning, letting it dry and breath for about 30 mins, then wrap in antibiotic ointment and wrap until the exposed nail bed is hard and "sealed". then baby it like crazy. im thinking i can go back to work in about a month (which kind of sucks) but i'm not going to risk fucking it up more and getting it infected.... and then even if it looks dumb, wrapping it up really well so its protected. hopefully that will get me some pity money :/
